Player of the season 2020/2021
« on: May 05, 2021, 12:31:28 PM »
I wasn’t sure if this sort of chat should be left until next week when we will likely be down, but it’s something more positive to talk about so why not.

For me it is down to 2 players - Pereira and Johnstone - with an honourable mention for Yokuslu.

Pereira has been our best outfielder this season. Even when he was off the boil he has still contributed goals and assists. Had we been better finishers, Pereira’s assists stats would be even healthier and he has been great to watch in full flow.

For me though, Sam Johnstone gets the nod. He has been far improved on the last 2 years and while I think he could easily flop next season at a new club, the character he has shown in coming back from a lot of criticism (some sent directly to him on social media), deserves credit, so he gets a Ronnie Wallwork style nod from me.

Matheus Pereira.

Young player of the year nomination would be Gallagher, just over O’Shea, although they are the only 2 players who started the season 21 or under who have made more than a handful of appearances from what I can see (something I find particularly depressing).

Periera (ruled SJ out, due to his first part of season), agree there are no other contenders sadly

Young player would be OShea for me. Hes done really well for a young, inexperienced CB up against the best front lines in world football.

Gallagher done fine but not quite enough for me.

No he hasn't, and even when he wasn't at his most effective he was still contributing.

Think it has to be Pereira, even if its only for his number of goals scored and assists.
Youklusu definitely deserves a mention, as I think he's played a big part in tightening the defence, whilst being good with the ball.

My young player would be Connor Townsend.

Hes 28.

I'm not certain that there is a distinct line between player and young player but 28 is pushing it for young in footballing terms surely?

Sam Johnstone for me.

My young player would be Connor Townsend.
Townsend is actually older than Johnstone  :o

Pereira all day for me with Yokuslu second! He's been better since January than the rest of the midfield since August!

I'd go Connor Townsend, keeps on improving and has been really consistent all season.
Pereira has improved massively since he's been in the middle, he was a lot less effective when out wide and seemed disinterested at times especially between Nov-Jan.

Sam Johnstone has improved a lot this season too but still has made some mistakes which have cost us.

Ronnie Wallwork type nod? I know Sam can be a bit flappy at times but dropping the nut on him's going a bit far, no wonder he always looks so worried ;D  ;) .

I'm not understanding the Conor Townsend nominations. Yes he's improved but we've played 34 league games and he's missed ten of them through injury. Nine of those games were on the bounce and he was an unused sub' for the next two.
