I’d pay good money to watch the under 2’s. Do they play on a regular sized pitch? :D
Forget it mate. Some of them could barely walk by the end of the match. Come to think of it, some of them could barely walk at the beginning  ;D

40% =105m, which values Ipswich at £260m 🤔, that valuation makes us a bargain for Mr Patel
Note the investment is "up to" £105 million. This could mean anything, but may be (for example) the figure if they get promoted to the Pl and stay there for a couple of seasons.

Blue and white stripes is the clubs identity though. Yellow and green stripes is a 1970's invention.
Yes, but that's well over 50 years the yellow and green has been with us, admittedly with a few gaps. As I said, it's been with us for so long, it's become part of our heritage, so I can see no point in abandoning it now just for the sake of change.

Why? We've had green and yellow stripes for most of the last 5 or 6 seasons.[/b] This seasons away kits have been a breath of fresh air in that respect.
Because it's become part of our heritage now. We've had navy blue and white for even longer - you could get an even bigger breath of fresh air by changing that  :o

Villa were a bit slow out of the blocks on these two. Both highly rated.

"The shirt is of a different weight", eh Brendan?  Yes, we are a a founder member of the top league in the world and you are one cheek of a second rate a*** that sits on top of a mickey mouse pyramid of part timers.
Harsh !! I'm assuming he's talking about the weight of expectation which I can understand tbh. I don't think he was comparing the status of the 2 clubs, but even if he was, it's undeniable that Celtic are a much bigger club than we are. And yes, there are a lot of part time clubs in the lower leagues, but I'm pretty sure all the clubs in the SPL are full time.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Albion Tackle Crowd Behaviour
« on: March 18, 2024, 09:53:28 AM »
At the start of this season the FA introduced an initiative at grass roots level to deduct points for repeated offences by players and coaches towards officials and opponents. Ie repeated acts of aggression and intimidation etc. They had a sort of watch list of 130 clubs or so from the seventh tier down in the men's game and third tier down in the not men's game.

This was specific to grass roots football as there's a particular problem in this regard at that level. I have no idea whether this applies across competitions (league/cup games) but there is no precedent whatsoever for points deductions in the professional game for crowd disturbances across competitions. None.

We all know about points deductions for financial breaches but if we face sanctions they will be financially based, unless the EFL and FA decide to make things up as they go along of course in which case I'd suggest we'd have a very strong defence dating back to 1871 (FA Cup) and 1880 (foundation of the football league).
What is the definition of a "not man"?  ;D

I agree with both of the last 2 comments. Wallace makes a lot of intelligent runs which have created space for both Johnson and Fellows. BTA makes just as many runs but often not with the same amount of awareness of what is going on around him. Given our current good form, I'm not sure if I would reinstate him as I'd be loathe to drop any of Wallace, Fellows Or Johnston.

Huddersfield having a worse keeper than us doesn't make me feel much better.  For the record I think Palmer does a good job and is easily the best we've had in a while.  I also highly rated Foster even when he was getting abuse.

When I said "quite often" I obviously mean when he's attempting to kick it long - he'll do it several times a game.  When under pressure, or a tricky back pass, then it's absolutely fine it's not an accurate kick.  But Palmer will do it from goal kicks, freekicks and when he's had the ball at his feet for a while and is under no pressure.  There's no real excuse for it.  Look at the flack Furlong gets if he gives the ball away cheaply - Palmer booting it into the stands when it's meant to be staying in play is even worse.

And it's not about "wetting it to feet" - he's landing it 20-30 yards away from his target or straight out of play without it touching the ground.  I'd be annoyed with myself for not being more accurate than that, let alone a professional footballer!

Or put it this way, when he boots it right out of play, Palmer won't be thinking to himself "that was alright, happy with that".
Agree with all 3 points in the highlighted para. With regard to his kicking, although I'm not denying that what you say happens from time to time, I really hadn't noticed it being quite as bad as you say, but I'm not too bothered really. Mostly what I'm concerned with in a goalie is keeping the ball out of our net and he does that pretty well. Of course he can improve though and I'm sure he will with experience and some decent coaching.
Just as an aside, I'm sure I never used the phrase "wetting it to feet". What does that even mean?  ;D

Compare and contrast. Page 1 of this thread and Page 6. The truth, I suspect, is somewhere in the middle.

I wonder what our new owner is thinking after this last week, what are his plans?
I imagine he is thinking that we were lucky to get a point against QPR, that the first half today was awful, and that the second half today was very good, pretty much the same as 98% of the rest of us. As for his plans, mmm, we'll just have to wait and see  ;D

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Alex Palmer
« on: March 10, 2024, 10:39:13 PM »
You expect the striker to score because he should give the keeper no chance - not kick it straight at him.  Put it this way, if you were to ask Palmer "should you have saved that?" he will 100% not say "no, I had no chance".  Mikey's 2nd was hit between the keeper's legs, much harder to save but not impossible.

Look, Palmer is the best we've got, but let's not try and pretend he's some world beater and doesn't make mistakes.  He should have saved that one today - but he also made 3 brilliant saves which nobody would have blamed him for if any of them had gone in.  He more than made up for his first half performance.

There's no excuse for his distribution - it's genuinely awful and has absolutely nothing to do with nobody looking to receive the ball.  Quite often it goes straight out of play or lands 30 yards from the nearest albion player.  And that's ignoring what he's like with passing to the defence.  He doesn't sort his feet out quick enough and adjusts as he's kicking the ball - bad technique but he'll get better at it.  I'm not expecting a 100% pass rate from him, but for the love of god, try and keep it on the pitch.
I well remember a lot of people saying the same thing about Foster, who was probably our best keeper in the last 50 years. However, to say that about Palmer is a wild exaggeration. I'm not saying it never happens, but it certainly isn't "quite often". I often notice the opposition keepers doing it much more, and the Huddersfield keeper today was a good example. But the main reason it doesn't happen "quite often" is that most of the time he plays it short to one of the defenders or Okay - this is something that he has clearly been told to do by CC as part of the strategy of keeping possession and playing out from the back (this gives me regular palpitations, but that's for a different discussion  :))

Didn't see the 2nd half Tim so i've not commented on it other than to say it sounded amazing in comparison to the 1st half which i did see. I did note that multiple people said Palmer made more than 1 decent stop in the 2nd half so that's good to hear!
Hope you get to see the whole 2nd half and not just the highlights, as it was a joy to watch. Hard to believe I know, after the turgid first half performance. Palmer made an excellent double save and a couple of other decent stops as well.

I thought Furlongs defending for it was awful, I do feel Palmer should have done better as well though
You're certainly right about Furlong. We had 3 people defending the middle, so he only had to defend against their player going outside, which he singularly failed to do. But all players make mistakes and Furlong didn't do much else wrong. Yes, maybe Palmer could have done a bit better but he more than made up for it in the second half with at least 3 excellent saves, so again not going to be too critical of his one slight error.

David Burrows was better than Townsend.
Fair comment, forgot about Burrows, though from memory he didn't play that many games for us. Wasn't he still a teenager when he was transferred to Liverpool? He certainly went on to become a very good left back though.

Those 3 things stand him in good stead though at this level.
Some of the comments about Furlong and Townsend (not to mention Palmer) are hard to fathom. We have the third best defence in the division (by a distance) in terms of goals conceded, yet apparently we have 2 full backs who are dreadful footballers and a goalkeeper who is error prone and whose kicking is terrible. Something isn't adding up and that's putting it as politely as I can.

I wouldn't class myself as anti CT and I've little doubt he's our best current option defensively at left fullback. But your wording suggests his stats aren't what they were and in the here and now it doesn't really matter what they were three or four years ago.

If you could provide a reference source (please) for your stats that would be greatly appreciated. And what metric are you using to define 'best one on one left back in the Championship'?

Does he top the charts defensively in tackles, blocks, interceptions, crosses prevented and successful aerial challenges or score a steady average? Does he top the charts in progressive plays, crosses, successful crosses goals and assists for his position?

Not having a pop here as I've spent zero seconds cross checking his stats across the other 22 first choice left backs in the Championship. Do we then consider how his piers at other clubs would fare in our set up or he in theirs'? Genuinely intrigued.
That's a bit below the belt, bringing up the piers at other clubs' locations. Obviously we don't have a decent pier, stuck as we are about as far from the sea as it's possible to get in the UK.  ;D ;D

Statham was the best at the time, but Kenny Sansom played for Arsenal and got all the caps

Back to CT, as far as we know, he hasn't attracted significant interest from prem clubs but he has been a constant part of a statistically high performing championship defence for a number of seasons, so he is in my opinion a good / very good championship defender. Maldini or Ashley Cole he aint.
That's very true, but as you pointed out in a previous post, he more than held his own when we were in the Prem. He's just turned 31 and is here for one more season I think, when we will probably need to replace him and I for one will be sad to see him go when the day comes.

true enough, CC is somewhat hamstrung currently.
He's an exciting young player, but as some have correctly pointed out, he struggles a bit to last a full 90 minutes of high energy. I think he's still developing physically and I'm fairly sure that we will be seeing a fitter and stronger Tom Fellows next season.

I’m presuming we must have been the only ones who have been to Specsavers recently?  ;D

I think you overestimate the amount of forum members who think he is actually good as opposed to him being the best of a particularly poor few options that we have in that position.
Not at all. If he was as poor as you say, we would have got a replacement for him several years ago. I just think that you're blinded by your own prejudice. You never have a good word to say for the guy. "The best of a particularly poor few options" is high praise indeed from you compared to some of your previous posts.
