Schumaker, Senna, passable drivers, Top echelon of their era but not alone. However they are not Great drivers. Both are/were aggressive drivers who others with more sense would often give way to. They only got away with some of the stuff they did on the track because of the vastly improved safety at tracks and in cars. For them it was virtually no risk scalextric racing,  and still is. Previous championships required trust in each others skills and fair play to race closely and not kill yourself or your opponents. Neither they nor Verstappen would have made any impression through their bullying tactics because they simply would not have taken the real risks involved rather than merely running off the road relatively safely, or just losing the race.
For a long time we have feted F1, largely due to the hype of its publicists, and nothing to do with the turgid processions served up by drivers who drive nothing but F1 machinery. Back in the day you could watch top drivers racing sports cars or saloons at the same meet as a Grand Prix. These were true Drivers not the diminutive little car steerers of today, where most of the crucial stuff can be done remotely from the pit lane. Soon be time to leave the 'drivers' out of the equation altogether and turn it all into an arcade game.

Not a fan then ?

My worry is that we will pick up a lot of draws and not many wins playing this way. It limits mistakes at the back and stops teams building attacks, but it also stops us from building attacks and relies heavily on mistakes or steals from the opposition defence as well as the set pieces. What we have seen last three games is that when we come up against a team that has little to no interest in winning against us and would be happy to draw we are unable to beat them playing this way. Perhaps it worked so well at Barnsley because less teams were happy to draw against them.

Ismael needs to be able to respond to this and he is going to have to work on two ways of playing which we can switch between during games else it will be the draws that cost us come the end of the season.

Yes the value of draws to us in the chumps is wildly different to in the prem.

In the prem you can almost draw yourselves to safety, (ergo the Pulis "do not lose strategy"). Which is sadly our objective, however,
In the chumps 46 draws would see you relegated most years and most definitely not pushing for an auto promotion / play off spot. which is our objective there. As fans we are absolutely correct to be concerned about home draws in the chumps.

In our last promo season we drew 10 at home and it was our ability to win away (a remarkable 12 away wins) which ultimately got us promoted. We will do well to repeat that away form again this season and therefore need to improve the points yield at home IMO.

Any recommendations for parking?

keep within the white lines, face the exit, retract your mirrors, don't leave valuables on display.

but seriously
Parking is available at the Club at a cost of £3 per car and non-members are admitted free into the club on matchdays. Around a 15 minute walk away on Watling Street Road is the White Hart pub, which allows in away fans.

Dwight Gayle and our pal Graeme Jones have had to be separated in training at Newcastle. Gone head to head apparently but Lascelles got in between them. Each accusing the other of it "being all about you"

Expect that will be a Gayle exit at xmas then, assuming that Bruce and Jones survive until then.
Didnt Gayle get a new contract recently? Could be an expensive bust up, unless resolved.

I was asking my Ipswich STH mate how the ex Albion lads were doing,

He said Edwardes is good for 45 mins and fades badly thereafter, while Harper had a great first game but has done little since, his view is loads of potential but not going to set the world on fire due to fitness and application.

Pretty disappointing at that level I feel.
Why don't our kids kick on? why does it seem they dont strive for improvement? Too comfortable in the academy? No need to be top level anymore as rewards are great enough even at League 1 level? Is it just a glass ceiling at championship now (imports).

Stuff in there that resonates with us,  also highlights that a "Plan A only" approach is doomed to failure and failure will be hastened if plan A is negative.

I like Hughton the man but he is joining the dinasour club I'm afraid. Chris Wilder next up for NFFC?

Like Pullis?? Against Peterborough a CD scored a winner from OPEN PLAY in the 95th minute!!  Now tell me it's anyway the same :D

I fo get their are similarities; a direct style and focus on set pieces but there it ends

remind yourself of that when you are queuing for your neck brace. (joking)

In truth Nothing is as bad as Pulisball, and I cannot see that VI is cowardly in his approach, rudimentary yes, less flexible than I'd like - possibly (time will tell). This is a work in progress and we have to wait and see, but, its good to debate rather than have discussion stifled because all discussion is seen as either criticism or approval, when in fact it can simply be observations.

I'm not having this, ban him before it catches on.

Best to nip these kind of things in the bud.......

Dangerous precedent, he should know better being an admin !  where is Oldbury when you need him ???

Put Ajayi upfront (a la Jonas)

a) he has an aerial threat
b) he will stretch defence with his pace
c) He is a long way from our goal

In all seriousness his pace could be a real asset up top.

We've already seen what happens mate, we batter teams. Sheff Utd and Luton. Although these will be dressed up by some as "Oh but Sheff Utd were rubbish then" or "but we gave Luton 2 goals and were lucky to scrape it"
Fact is, we should have had 6 before Luton even got a kick and Sheff Utd were just destroyed.
Of course, it would be mad to hold these performances up as the standard, just as much as it is Millwall and Derby, the status quo is somewhere in the middle and, over the season, results, and points, will reflect that.

Entirely sensible and reasonable post !

It isnt really it's just that our fans think he is much better than he actually is. They love the little flicks and the things that are easy on the eye but most of the time he's ineffective.

Dont get me wrong, it was his best performance for some time against Derby, second half, but that just emphasises the problem and despite the improvement still no goal and no assist. First half he was awful, improved after the break.

He's a forward in this system and has to contribute goals and assists, that's what wins you games not some nutmeg on the touchline.

Jeeze, were you watching Willie back in the day? Wee willie was not prolific but he provided great opportunities, however his success was dependent on the likes of the King & Bomber getting on the end of his crosses. If Grady didnt put a couple on a plate against Derby, I must have been dreaming.

Grady has been rubbish for a while but he was not against Derby and how those statistics say he was rubbish baffles me.

There was a meeting last Thursday 9th September, I understand match tickets & car parking were first and second on the agenda.

This is a quote under the section "Home Supporters Guide" on the official site

It's not WBAFC, it's an events management company called Event Support Team, who determine the prices.

They have arrangements with the Mercure Hotel, Brasshouse Community Centre, & the timber merchants opposite the ground.

Sounds like "Event support team" are in it to make money from supporters much as Sky / BT / Clubs / Burger van man ....  its the way of the world now, you are a customer there to have money extracted from regardless of your view of the deal. Take it or move on, thems your choices and the assembly wont influence it one bit.

Bang on

Bang off actually !  Most of what I have read isn't about style or points its about tactics.

Its hard to not be concerned when we play the first half against Derby in the same manner which was ineffective at Posh and against Millwall, Yes we did change it to "football" for the 2nd half but took "footballers" off again concerning.

Its perfectly reasonable to comment on that in my opinion. VI is learning as are the squad, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't discuss that on a forum surely ?

Personally I much preferred the 2nd half performance far more, it gives me hope of progression whereas the first half was frankly very depressing fare.

« on: September 15, 2021, 03:54:33 PM »
I hate time wasting, but as Liam pointed out, we can’t complain.

It’s a major change but doesn’t strictly change the game… I’d be happy to see the game go to a clock that stopped when the ball was out of play. Find out the Normal ball in play time and whether that’s 60mins, 65mins or whatever, play to that. Technically the game length shouldn’t change if injury time is accurate (we all know it’s not).

Blimey Tony Pulis would still be in 1974 !!

maybe you have hit on something here  :D

Wow, thats a surprise and flies in the face of our MOTM voting !

These sort of comments are a very sad idictment of our Summer transfer dealings. And sadly I very much agree.

Whichever way you dress Hugill up he's an average Championship lump.

I think seeing him in fish nets and a pencil skirt would give you a different perspective actually !

Open letter to Val:

We don't have an out and out centre forward.
Stop lumping the ball up to the opposition centre halves. We don't have an out and out centre forward.
Play the ball on the floor my neck is killing me.
Get swivel chairs installed in the East and West stands so that we can keep up with the two goalkeepers kicking the ball to each other.
For gawds sake try and keep the ball below waist height for some part of the game, a bit like in the second half last night.
Why did you change to playing on the floor last night then take Robbo off?
See if you can sort out a centre forward for the Jan window.
Did I mention we don't have an out and out centre forward (not one that scores goals anyway)

Is watching the vertical game more of a challenge in the Halfords? I imagine that if you are not in the front half of the stand a lot of the time the ball is out of sight. Any blanket & flask folks on here ?

We should also be looking to play with the ball on the floor.
When we did that last night we were all over Derby

We need to do both, making it impossible for opposition to predict what we are going to hit them with.

You can go all Arsenal ticky tacky or Wimbledon direct, whichever, if you know whats coming your oppo can set up ready to a a degree.

I see parallels with tennis

Sampras best by a margin in his era

Djokovic / Nadal / Federer, competitive trio
Connors / McEnroe, competitive pair

Best of all time ?? I'd argue Federer or Sampras?

Hamilton = Sampras

Schumacher = Federer

Hunt / Senna / Prost = competitive trio
Stewart / Jim Clarke / Graham Hill

Impossible to say who is the best ever IMO. (personally its Schumacher with Hamilton getting very close)
