I remember that too, but he hasn't pulled up any trees since, I don't even know where he is?

He's at Sunderland.

Even at this early stage it's hard to see past Us, Bournemouth and Fulham battling for the 2 automatic promotion places.
It's just as hard to see who will make up the other places for the play offs.

A lot will depend how Bournemouth react to losing and when/if the Silva bubble bursts as it has done everywhere he's been.

I still fancy us for automatic promotion as we can improve but Fulham and Bournemouth seem to playing at their optimum which is hard to maintain.

Agree that he was the best ref we've had this season, let down by his assistants missing offsides though. Happy to let play carry on. Could have booked a couple of Bristol players though.

I liked the fact that when he told a player to take a throw from where it had gone out he watched them to make sure they didn't steal 10 extra yard.

There's the 'plan B' then, less of a press and more on the floor.

Thought we played well and dealt with the delays really well, certainly better than we did with the long delay against Luton.

Hugill looked more like the player that I thought we were getting. Glad he scored but should have had at least 2 goals though he played well and made a nuisance of himself all game.

The midfield paring of Molumby and Snodgrass played well and certainly bossed it. Snodgrass unlucky hitting the post. At least we now know that we can change the midfield around if needed through either tactics or suspensions.

Thought the assistant refs were poor, missing numerous offsides. Thankfully the ref overruled the assistant in disallowing Bristol's almost instant equaliser.

Johnstone had a quiet game; other than the ruled out goal and a header in the second half I can't recall anything else they created really.

Townsend and Furlong both had good games.
Phillips was generally the pick of the front 3 but Grant took his goal well and fired an earlier chance straight at the keeper when he probably should have scored. Diangana got involved when he came on and looked sharp going past players with purpose.

All in all a good team performance and win.

Only reference to dying that I could hear (I sit in the East Stand) was Bristol fans singing 'City til I die' which I thought was a tad insensitive considering one of their own was getting urgent medical treatment.

We can’t possibly put Phillips at RWB as owing to our poor summer window he’s probably the best striker we have right now.
Both Robinson and Grant are outscoring Phillips so not sure he's our best striker. Agree though we can't play him at RWB as we only have Hugill as our other striker option...unless we go with an untried u23 player.

That T Mobile black kit was cool - but then so were we back then.

We just need to stop playing like a pile of ****, doesn't matter what we wear.

Very succint...and true!

« on: October 22, 2021, 07:28:00 PM »
He needs to be taken out - just to show he's not untouchable because of the throw-in. He looked tired and jaded and going forward there were so many heavy touches from him.

Gardner-Hickman or Phillips. My worry about Phillips is that he doesn't have the engine to get up and down the wing for probably much more than 50/55 minutes if that long.

I'm not sure Phillips or Gardner - Hickman can play centre half instead of Bartley.

Should this be on the Furlong thread?
I wouldn't like to see Phillips at centre back  :(

I know and from a member of the mod team too!    :D

He doesn't offer enough for me, I was expecting a slight upgrade on HRK not a world beater or anything.

Mind you if the Phillips shot had gone in last night he would've had an assist for his chest down into Phillips' path.

I think we could do worse than play this guy, even if it's off the bench.

Only seen him in the Cup game against Arsenal and U23 against Sunderland but he didn't really stand out in either game. Lots of tricks but bugger all else. Needs to learn a lot before he's ready for the first team IMO.
Definitely one for the future.

The main problem for me isn't a lack of Plan B it's that Plan A isn't being carried out anymore. At first we managed to press teams with intensity right from the off, causing them to make mistakes ...remember Sheff Utd and Blackburn?

Even against Peterborough we were still pressing quickly but as there defenders seemed content in just hoofing it away the front 3 stopped closing down....what they should have been doing was still pressing.

Our goal last night was down to pressing them quickly and causing them to make mistakes, Kyle Naughton panics and tries a backheel to no one Livermore then gets the ball plays it quickly to Phillips who lays it on for Robinson to cross and Grant taps it in.

The players need to get back to the way we played in the early games, we played with intensity but it was decent to watch, much more on the ground rather than the hoofing it forward we have seem for the last 6 games or so.

I agree that Mowett should not play tonight and start Molumby pairing with Livermore.  Upfront, anyone except Hugill - even Elsie Golightly who serves tea in the Brummie would be a better option 🤪

Seems there won’t be many Baggies at the game tonight with these Welsh rules, I cannot understand why those double or even treble jabbed people can’t be bothered to download the NHS App and get their Covid passports virtually instantly. Not only is it going to happen in England, it will also mean that soon Covid Passports will be required to travel overseas. Such an easily solved problem with the NHS App.

The reason that I (and maybe quite a few others) aren't going even though I'm double jabbed is because it's a Tuesday Night in Swansea and I have work today and tomorrow. Even if I left straight after the end of the match I wouldn't get home until about 3am after a 5hr drive, no thanks.

Had it been a weekend game I would've gone and made a weekend of it with my partner.

Have to agree with that Aussie.
Mowatt is, of course, a massive player for us but, if he starts, it will be hearts in mouths for every tackle, so, I kind of hope Molumby starts after his cameo on Friday. He'll need to come in eventually so may as well be now as his confidence will be high.

Agree with Aussie's team selection too. Play Robinson through the middle with Grant left and Phillips right.

Good point about Mowatt and I think I'd be inclined to rest him and play Molumby, the more game time he gets the better it is for us as he will be needed as a replacement soon with Livermore on 4 bookings and Mowatt on 3.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Conor Townsend
« on: October 20, 2021, 08:51:45 AM »
My memory of Billy Jones was that he was a liability, yes he ran around like a steam train but he had no positional sense or awareness and little football ability, he got done down his side numerous times. Lucky that Roy gave him a chance for a while but was clearly never a premiership standard full back. Townsend is a much better footballer.

Agree that Townsend is a better footballer than Billy Jones but I don't recall Jones being a liability. I thought he improved defensively each season but that improvement was to the detriment of his attacking forays. Strange how we remember the same player!
I remember his debut against Wolves back in 2011 when he produced a lovely cut back for Brunt to score.

Maybe it's me then, but I rarely get more than a few words in the East stand. Recently got me new hearing aids to go with me tartan rug and matching thermos, so already getting tooled up for the Halfords, didn't realise I wouldn't need the hearing aids though. ::)

not just you Wodenson 46, I'm in Row D of the East Stand and can't hear anything clearly either...and I don't have or need hearing aids!
It just sounds like the teacher from the Peanuts cartoons.

I thought it was quite a poor performance from a lacking ideas perspective. Blues came for a point just like Millwall and Derby..and to a lesser extent QPR (although they had the benefit of a gifted goal). We struggled to get through them; trying the same things endlessly with bugger all success.

We struggle against teams that park the bus. I don't think it's a lack of a plan B more that Plan A isn't being implemented to the same degree as it was in the first few games. As others have mentioned the press isn't really there anymore which is one of the fundamentals of Ismael's style of play.

I think the players need to remember how important the press is and winning the ball high up the pitch, but they all need to it.

Townsend was MoM for me, plenty of times he put decent balls in but the front three weren't making the runs into the box which they should've been doing.

I was impressed with Molumby, he seemed more assured in possession and we looked better in midfield once he came on. Might have been better to have rested Mowatt, although hindsight's a wonderful thing.
Livermore broke up play and played some decent passes, Clarke looked a little rusty but we look stronger defensively with him in. Bartley, apart from 1 error, and Ajayi both had decent games, Furlong quieter than usual. The front 3 were feeding off scraps mostly but also didn't help themselves by not anticipating Townsend's crosses into the box.

Happy with the result but I'd be even happier if we could get back to the high intensity press of the earlier games.

Spotted a picture of Mowatt in training out on grass on the club's Twitter feed earlier. Good sign hopefully.

it's now on the O/S too, as you say it's hopefully good news.

I can't remember so many "international breaks" when I was younger. There are too many disruptions to club football with all these extra tournaments and qualifiers.

Indeed, I'm pretty sure international fixtures were just played during the week. I don't recall friendlies being played during the season either.

Same with the so called Champions league, too many meaningless games, just go back to being a real champions tournament and a knock out at all rounds with no seeded teams.

Bah Humbug!

With Callum Robinson’s two goals for Ireland he must start. He’s on fire and what a bargain he is turning out to be in the swap for that Burke fellow. (one for the future Pulis said and then paid was it £13m for him!).

Still reckon Callum’s goal against Chelsea is one of the best I’ve seen for years with him starting the build-up and what a volley to finish the move off.  Mowett’s goal was a great strike but unlike Robbo, no classy lead-up play to him scoring - ball was a defenders clearance if I remember correctly.

Totally agree he has to start (along with Grant), but we have to play to their strengths and keep it on the ground more than it's in the air.
