West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Jordan Hugill joins on loan
« on: October 24, 2021, 08:42:39 PM »
Its pushing it a bit to say he played a blinder, but he gave Bristol's defence something to worry about. The chances he missed were not difficult ones, but you'd hope that he gets his head down on the training ground and improves his ratio of goals to chances. That said, I agree that you need to be in position in the first place to get the chances.

If you say he finished like a blindman you'd be closer to the truth. Glad he scored for his confidence but jesus how many chances; next week at Fulham we won't be in such a fortunate position and be able to be that wasteful if want a result.

Held the ball up really well and seemed to enjoy the tussle with the Brizzle CBs.

Took his goal well but on a good day he should have had 4/5. A bad day, I'd say two of those should have been finished.

We desperately need a striker in January - but it's clear that we are a better team with a focal point up front, no doubt.

Callum Morton out on loan at Fleetwood is already a better prospect in my view than Hugill and should be recalled in January. We also are yet to give Tulloch an opportunity. Then there is Reyes Cleary who is supposedly being watched by Chelsea and Dortmund and being dubbed the next Lukaku. So we have options internally that should not be overlooked (but almost certainly will be).

Just watched the highlights of the game. Here are some thoughts on Hugill.

Took his goal well.
With the second chance, yes it was an open goal but the ball was in the air and maybe not at the right height. A better striker probably would have scored.
His third chance I thought it was a good save by their keeper. He got a hand to it, if he hadn’t I think Hugill was on target.

No point sugar coating it with excuses, it was an appalling miss, summed up by him managing to headbutt the post. You’ve also missed out his volley from ten yards blazed over that a decent striker would have scored and all these chances are just the first half.

He should have had two for sure. The one where he bashed his head was a sitter.

The other two in the first half were very good chances and you’d hope he’d score one of them, but I didn’t  think either were tap ins.

I think he had five very good chances and took one of them. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a striker miss that many guilt edged chances. Couple of times he ran through on goal and with every stride and touch he looked more unlikely to score.

Excellent performance. Better technical footballer than Livermore, maybe not as strong defensively but enabled us to push through the lines and upfield a lot quicker than we normally do.

We benefited from having both him and Snodgrass in the midfield, two players that can pass the ball, support each other, get most of their positional play and decision making right. The way forward should be to play Mowatt when fit alongside Molumby and/or Snodgrass. Livermore should be fourth choice.

Sounds to me like we may have stumbled on our best formation reading the comments Molumby certainly deserves to keep his place in the team.

The formation hasn't changed. The significant difference is that we have decent player in central midfield inplace of Livermore. Second half now delayed by another crowd medical emergency, this time in the Bristol City end. Not sure this game will ever end.

We would have been home and dry if Robinson hadn’t been dropped for Hugill. Although he’s scored, I understand he’s missed three!

The goal was a tap in but he took it. He then missed an open goal from three yards out that was harder to miss than score and then head-butted the post in the same incident (comical). He then volleyed over from ten yards out when he should have at least hit the target before he missed a one-on-one when he never looked comfortable. Ridiculous 45 minutes from him.

We have played Bristol City off the park and look a million time better in central midfield with two footballers playing and Livermore suspended. If Hugill wasn't so wasteful this would already be 4-0.

One thing that Pulisball and Valball have in common is that it's misery for forwards  - particularly those with any talent.  On the one hand they hardly ever get a ball to feet from the back or midfield; they have to go chasing it, on the other hand, they have to chase the ball as it's switched between defenders and goalie - no wonder they're shattered after 60 mins.  It's as wretched for them as it is for us watching.

I would rather be a mid-table Championship club watching yound players half from the academy , half inspired / stats-led picks playing to feet with a morsel of elan rather than this.

I don't agree as we have scored and created plenty which is nothing like a Pulis team and I don't think our forwards are particularly shattered after an hour either, but the manager has his thing, he likes to make changes. Back-fired big time last night and Robinson was understandably annoyed to be subbed.

The way we played under Big Sam was better than this.

Not the collection of games at the start when we lost four or five games with a consecutive scoreline of 25-0 or something. Then we got our act together a little after we signed better players in January. This current team however is far inferior to the resources that Big Sam had to choose from. That was clear last night, you could see how ordinary we looked as soon as Mowat was not playing.

https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/west-bromwich-albion/2021/10/20/valerien-ismael-disappointed-with-west-brom-defeat/ "My expectation is that we come quickly into the final third and that we push the line high and have an aggressive defence so that the opponent cannot push out of pressure. We didn’t make it well, and it’s the reason Swansea came back in the game and they started better in the second half."You need to find a way to stay compact and organised."

I think VI analysis is broadly correct, Swansea had all the time in the world to pick the ball up around the half-way line and to launch it in-behind our defence, second half we failed to close them down and failed to press them to stop them picking their balls over the top. This was particularly the case down our right hand side where Furlong and Phillips were terrible.

Missed the 2bd half, had a footy match. Was it as bad as it sounds?

No way this guy will last 4 years if he can't change a game

In short yes. Swansea ran riot; we looked awful with Hugil on and with Mowatt out; horror show. Furlong in particularly, was impressively bad. Most professional footballers would have struggled to make that many mistakes had they been trying to.

Pereira for all his ability would have struggled with bingo ball and constant lumping from the back , star dust doesnt get used in tactics like this. Robinson is our most dangerous attacker yet struggles with tactics ,  lesser MP if you like . Its drone football that sucks any joy out of it .

Yeah, but having players like Pereira would also allow the team to play through the pitch when in possession and link the team together properly. He was a great player so obviously is a massive miss, regardless of the set-up.

I think he set a new low this evening for his worst performance so far and we have been treated to a collection of abysmal displays. Worst cameo of appearances from any striker I can remember that we have had, going all the way back to the early 90s. Even Micky Evans had a purple patch.

I said when Bilic was sacked and Allardyce appointed the club had taken a massive backwards step. The club is rotten at the core.

We can only hope that we somehow achieve promotion this year and end up with new owners.

Fully agree. It's even more of a circus act now as the squad is even weaker than the one that had no chance of top flight survival last season.

And some of the fans defending this garbage are the ones who criticised Allardyce (in a better division) and Wilder in the summer for their styles. This is worse.

There is a world of difference between being annoyed with the performance and result on the one hand and comically calling for the manager to be sacked on the other. I know we were garbage tonight, it's clear to me that the limitations of this team are starting to show; as soon as a little bit of quality like Mowatt and Grady are out we look what we are, ordinary.

Nobody can say with any logic that the team has underperformed so far, if anything they have done well to get to 25 points in the first 13 games.  Sacking the manager would be futile; and a repeat of what we keep doing over the last two years, underspending, over-expecting and then sacking managers. Amazes me that more of the fan base haven't cottoned on yet. If the board were serious about promotion they would have kept Pereira. That simple really.

It’s the tactics though. No chance Pereira would have got a game in this system.

Val is not the future. He’s the past.

What nonsense, Periera would obviously have walked into this side in any system, and played in one of the wide front three roles; in place of Phillips.

We just received £17m for a player we should've got £60m for.  I think the top 2 has gone, certainly if we lose at Fulham. We need to get Diangana back.

Top two was unrealistic as soon as we sold Periera, he is the sort of quality you need to get out of this league automatically; you need a bit of star-dust to stand out from the pack. Fulham have a much stronger squad than us and that will really start to show over the Xmas period when the fixtures stack-up. Bournemouth less so but they are winning for fun.

Special mention for Jordan Hugill tonight, managed to take his previous servings of some of the worst performances from a West Brom striker in the modern era and put in a new low, that was his worst outing yet. To think we compared him to Scott Dobie, insult to Scott's career.

The way I see it we have only a handful of players of a good footballing ability, who are Grady, Grant, Robinson, Mowatt, Townsend and Reach; the rest are cloggers or decent defenders. Tonight we had way too many cloggers and not enough quality. Swansea embarrassed us second half by passing it around us.

Awful. Darnell Furlong is an absolutely atrocious player. How in Gods name is he playing professional football!?

My thoughts exactly, the bloke is unable to control and pass the ball - embarrassing to have a player that technically bad at this level; some accomplishment from himself to get this far up the football ladder. Yes he can run and take a long throw and jump but put the football at his feet and he is a lost puppy.

Just please leave

That didn’t take long, two defeats, third in the league.

Sack the manager! Obvious course of action to take.

Never mind top quality like Pereira was given away in the summer.

Great defending for that second goal there. Another mistake leading to a big chance.

That was actually quality play from their goal scorer, brilliant nutmeg and finish.

It was Furlong playing like a clown that gave them the ball to hurt us, one on one in our box.

Played off the park second half, we look like a very average championship side, nowhere near good enough to keep pace with the top two on this evidence. Furlong is none-league standard when it comes to basic football ability. Couldn’t pass it 5 yards and gave it away for their goal.

Subbing Robinson off for Hugil at 0-1 that was worked wonders for Swansea!

That’s Livermore out for next game

To collect 5 yellows in 13 games is inept.

We are clinging on

Hardly, has Sam Johnstone had a save to make?

The only noticeable point from that half is that the standard is terrible. Professional players juggling the ball, unable to trap and pass it. Swansea look like little kids and we look like rugby players bullying them.

Furlong now in the book.

He’s had a shocker, some comedy passes, first touches and miss kicks from him followed up with a terrible attempted tackle.
