Albion have signed Celtic winger Mikey Johnston on loan for the remainder of the Sky Bet Championship season, subject to international clearance.

Johnston becomes the Baggies’ third signing of the January transfer window, joining fellow additions Andi Weimann and Callum Marshall in Carlos Corberán’s first-team squad.

The 24-year-old attacker has made 92 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish champions, including nine since the start of December.

He made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland in March 2023 and has now earned eight caps, scoring twice.

And the Glasgow-born wide player cannot wait to get started.

“I want to hit the ground running and make an impact right away,” said Mikey. “I think the deal has been rumbling on since the start of the window, so I’m just happy to get it over the line.

“Right from the start, the gaffer Carlos Corberán was on to me to get me in. He was telling me all about the way he likes to play and bits about the club.

“I was really keen as soon as I spoke to him. He’s impressive. You know exactly what he needs from you and it’s exactly the type of manager I like to work under.”

Head coach Carlos Corberán added: “At the start of the window we identified a need to increase our attacking options, specifically in wide positions.

“Mikey was one of our targets going into this window and we are delighted he is joining us.

“He is a player with European and international football experience as a winger and, if needed, he also has the qualities required to play as a number 10.

“Mikey has the skill to make a difference in the final third and the fact he has played regularly for Celtic in December and January means he will be able to make an immediate impact here.”

Albion have completed the signing of Andreas Weimann on loan from Bristol City for the remainder of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

The Austria international attacker, who has been capped 21 times by his nation, arrives at The Hawthorns with a wealth of experience having made over 300 appearances in the second tier for four clubs.

Weimann, who also has 113 Premier League games to his name, has been handed the number 17 shirt.

‘Andi’ is excited to arrive at The Hawthorns and hopes his experience can help the team.

Head Coach Carlos Corberán added: “Andi has proven himself to be an excellent Championship player for many years, and we are pleased to have him with us.

“He adds quality and experience to our attacking options and is a welcome addition to the group.

“He is fit and ready to play which is also important. We’re looking forward to working with Andi and I’m confident he will make a positive contribution during his time here.”

DONE DEAL

https://www.wba.co.uk/news/pipa-joins-loan-ludogorets

Albion have signed Spanish defender Pipa on a season-long loan from reigning Bulgarian champions Ludogorets.

The 25-year-old right-back, who has Champions League experience, teams up with Head Coach Carlos Corberán for a third time, following spells at Huddersfield and Olympiakos.

Pipa can also play at wing-back and began his career at Espanyol where he progressed through Spain’s youth age groups to under-21 level.

And Corberán, who coached Pipa in a Championship Play-Off final, says he will “increase competition” in his defence.

Carlos said: “Pipa is a player I know well having worked with him twice before, and I am delighted to welcome him to the club, particularly as he was so enthusiastic about joining Albion.”

“He is a versatile player with experience of the Championship, Champions League, and La Liga, and he helps cover our needs at right-back and right wing-back.

“It is important we have competition in all positions of the pitch and bringing in Pipa increases our defensive options on the right, as well as allowing a younger player to gain experience on loan.

“I am pleased a player of his experience and professionalism is joining the club for the season.”

Albion are delighted to confirm the appointment of Marcos Abad as the club’s Goalkeeping Coach.

Abad arrives at The Hawthorns following a six-year spell with Leeds United, where he worked with Baggies boss Carlos Corberán.

Abad replaces Gary Walsh in the head coach’s backroom staff, and Corberán paid tribute to the departing Goalkeeping Coach, before outlining Abad’s qualities.

He said: “First of all, I would like to thank Gary for all his hard work at the football club, and all the work we have done together. We have built a strong relationship that I will always appreciate.”

“I would like to welcome Marcos to the club,” Corberán added. “I have worked with Marcos before for three years at Leeds and I know he shares my passion and enthusiasm for coaching and I know that will help us with our goalkeepers, as well as some other responsibilities that he will take on with my staff.

“This is an opportunity for Marcos and I to work together again, which I’m pleased about, as I know Marcos has the knowledge, experience and dedication to help us, specifically with our goalkeepers.”

West Bromwich Albion FC / Retained list
« on: May 23, 2023, 04:23:53 PM »
Everyone gone as expected apart from Pieters who is in talks to stay.

West Bromwich Albion can confirm their retained and released lists following the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Baggies are in talks with first-team defender Erik Pieters over a new deal, while goalkeeper Ted Cann has earned a one-year extension to his current contract, which now runs until June 2024.

PL2 quartet Jamie Andrews, Mo Faal, Aaron Harper-Bailey and Brad Foster, as well as second-year scholars Fenton Heard, Akeel Higgins, Layton Love and Narel Phillips, have all received offers to remain with the club.

But three senior players will be leaving The Hawthorns this summer.

Long-serving club captain Jake Livermore departs following six-and-a-half years in B71, and he said goodbye to Baggies fans earlier this month via an open letter.

Tom Rogic and Kean Bryan are also leaving the football club.

Former Celtic midfielder Rogic, who signed in September 2022, exits having scored twice in 23 games across all competitions last season and Bryan departs after making three appearances in two years at The Hawthorns.

Youngsters Quevin Castro, Rico Richards, Ramello Mitchell, Cianole Nguepissi, Sammy Okoka, Sam Oluwatobi, Beau Hudd, Tobias Hurlock, Femi Olofinjana, Archie Oliver and Jesse Wangusi are also set to leave the Baggies when their current contracts expire.

The club would like to thank all departing players for their efforts during their time at The Hawthorns and wishes them every success in the future.

The recently-retired central defender claimed promotion to the Premier League as a player at The John Smith’s Stadium, before returning to combine coaching with an ambassadorial role.

Corberán said: “I would like to welcome Michael to The Hawthorns as a member of my staff. I know him personally from my time at Huddersfield and look forward to working alongside him again.

“Michael has all the attributes required to join my team and I know he will provide a valuable contribution as we work together as a club to improve.

“I, of course, wish Jaime well in the future. Michael is a highly-capable replacement who I know will be an excellent addition to work alongside Jorge, Damia, James and Gary.”

West Bromwich Albion FC / Jeremy Peace loan investigation - confirmed

West Bromwich Albion Football Club can confirm an independent investigation into a 2014 loan to West Bromwich Albion Holdings Limited will commence in the new year.

The club authorised the independent investigation following consultation with Shareholders for Albion – an organisation representing 430 minority shareholders of West Bromwich Albion Group Limited.

The terms of reference document for the investigation, which is expected to conclude within six months, has been signed and a King’s Counsel barrister has been appointed to produce an independent report.

Albion Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, said: “When I joined the club in February, I was asked by Shareholders for Albion to investigate the 2014 loan, and we have since worked with the group to agree the terms of reference for an independent investigation.

“I am confident the appointed King’s Counsel barrister will compile a thorough and detailed report which, whatever the outcome, will help us to move forwards in the best interests of the club.”

Shareholders for Albion Vice-Chair, Leigh Kent, added: "It is well documented that securing an independent investigation is something which Shareholders for Albion has pursued for a number of years.

“We are grateful to Ron Gourlay for commissioning the investigation and working positively with us to agree reasonable and objective terms of reference."

The club and Shareholders for Albion will make no further comment on this matter until the investigation has reached a conclusion.

Just googled him and noticed he is 23 as you have since posted. Surely he has to get out now and play.

He's not old but he's not a teenager either by some years.

I wish we could sign his old man personally.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Wba financial report 2020-2021
« on: June 30, 2022, 09:25:15 AM »
West Bromwich Albion Football Club has submitted to Companies House its annual report and financial statements for the 11-month period ended 30 June 2021, which reflects the 2020/21 Premier League season.

The club recorded 26 points and a 19th-placed finish in the Premier League, which resulted in relegation to the Sky Bet Championship. The club continues to rebase itself and maintain financial sustainability following relegation from the Premier League.

The club broke even for the period ended 30 June 2021, reporting a small profit of £0.1m.

Turnover increased from £53.7m in the 13-month period ended 31 July 2020 to £106.9m, owing to Premier League distributions and sponsorship income.

However, the coronavirus pandemic continued to have a significant impact on the club’s finances, with a total of £13.2m (2020: £2.8m) lost due to COVID-19 during the reporting period. The club played out 18 of its 19 Premier League home fixtures behind closed doors, which resulted in estimated net losses of £7.5m.

The fees paid for the purchase of player registrations during this period is £30.5m (2020: £34.2m), while the sale of player registrations returned £9.7m (2020: £46.3m).

Staff costs increased to £76.9m from £66.9m, with the increase predominantly driven by the contractual salary increase for players and staff following promotion to the Premier League.

In March 2021 the club loaned £4,950,000 to Wisdom Smart Corporation Limited, a related party to Controlling Shareholder Guochuan Lai, with interest fixed at £50,000 and repayment due on 15 September 2021. A new repayment date of 31 December 2022 has since been agreed.

Albion Chairman and Controlling Shareholder Guochuan Lai said: “I would like to publicly thank club staff and supporters for their ongoing loyalty to the football club after two disappointing seasons.

“I believe we have made positive progress in recent months and the appointment of Ron Gourlay as Chief Executive Officer in February has already strengthened the football club. The early acquisitions of John Swift and Jed Wallace provide us with added quality as the club continues to embrace a period of positive change.

“I remain committed to returning the football club to the Premier League and I am confident we will be able to compete for promotion from the Championship this coming season.

“The club’s annual accounts for the 2020/21 season detail a loan to Wisdom Smart Corporation Limited, a related party to me. Regrettably, the COVID-19 pandemic saw my international businesses suffer, particularly those in the hospitality and entertainment sector, which experienced an almost complete closure for long periods, and in March 2021 I received a loan from the football club.

“The upturn in the global economy has brought with it greater positivity and I can confirm I will repay the loan in full, with interest, by the end of the current calendar year and the funds will be available to the club during the January 2023 transfer window.

“I am looking forward to an exciting season for Albion and again thank fans for their dedicated support of the football club. I will return to The Hawthorns to watch a game at the earliest opportunity, and I am excited to see the progress the team has made this summer.”

Albion can confirm the signing of promising defender Cianole Nguepissi following a successful trial period with the club.

The 18-year-old has penned a professional contract at The Hawthorns which runs until the summer of 2023, with the option of a further year in the club’s favour.

Nguepissi impressed the Baggies’ academy staff during Under-23s matches against Southampton, Aston Villa and Birmingham City, and Senior Professional Development Phase Manager Richard Beale is excited to continue working with the young centre-back.

“We’re really happy that we’ve been able to secure the services of Cianole.

“He’s a fantastic young player who’s athletic, uses the ball sensibly, has a really good attitude and is someone we feel has a lot of potential to become a better player here and, hopefully, get into the first team in the future.

“He’s played a few trial games for us and really impressed during those, so we’re excited to work with him and he’s already improved since he's been with us and hopefully that’ll carry on during his time here.”
