Anyone see Karsten Walholm set a ridiculous WR in the 400m hurdles? Apparently that time is the equivalent of 9.62 over 100m. Insane. Feel a bit sorry for Benjamin in second, smashed the old WR and still didnt win.

Just wish I could be sure these athletes are straight. I'd watch far more track and field if so.
Great race, wish I'd seen it live. Think it's a case of two great athletes pushing each other to new heights. They are saying it's a fast surface so if you get the two best pushing each other quick times will follow. There's always a nagging doubt with any outstanding performance though unfortunately...not just in athletics.

I'd say it was more difficult for Pereira to achieve what he did. Benrahma had the advantage of being supported by man-for-man more skilful players, which should have helped him more.
Benrahma only started 14 games and came off the bench about the same number. Injury and competition for places amongst other things make direct comparisons pretty pointless. Each transfer is a completely different set of circumstances. Also the eventual price quoted tends to be the full package amount i.e. if all conditions  are met (e.g. plays so many games, the club gets European football, scores x number of goals.....).

Will be disappointed to see one of the few genuinely skilful, intelligent footballers we've had on our books, but if he goes we have to get what he's worth in today's transfer market. Its what other clubs do. Would Villa undervalue any of their players?
Even if Harry Kane doesn't turn up at training, do you think Daniel Levy drops his price under £100m? I don't think so.

West Ham are trying it on at the moment, but if they could find £25m + £5m add-ons for Benrahma, they should definitely better that for Pereira. I don't remember Benrahma making anywhere near Periera's contribution in the PL last season.

We have stop selling off our assets on the cheap. You know that if he was a Spurs or Villa player, they would be talking about vastly larger transfer values.
I don't go for these direct comparisons personally. Pereira was the big fish in a small pond for us, familiar with team mates, surroundings and taking most free kicks and penalties of course. Benrahma on the other hand moved from being the big fish to finding his feet at a bigger club with more competition for places.

You can probably add in that he often appeared a bit sulky and anonymous in games when he was asked to play wide (better towards end of last season). You could argue that he should have been playing centrally but he's unlikely to get full access to his favourite position at whatever club he moves to. Plenty of top class players have to be prepared to switch positions for the good of the side. Maybe question marks about his versatility and defensive work rate are the reason there's not a queue of clubs lining up to sign him.

We won't be playing either so....
Yeah I know we'll be playing wing backs but the comparison on Reach / Townsend stats that was made in this thread remains an uneven comparison due to their past playing positions.
I doubt you'll agree but if Ismael wants the ball played forward and into the box quickly I'm expecting Townsend to get more assists this year....he's got a good left foot delivery.

Mears and Hoolihan were over 35, as reach is 28 I don’t think he will end up in those category. I’ve also seen some Wednesday comments that because of Reach’s adaptability and their problems over the years he’s played out of position a lot. Some comments have suggested if you leave him out left he will be ‘ok’

Clearly that’s not perfect as I’d agree the full backs willl be essential but I don’t think it will be terrible. If you go purely on attacking productivity (goals and assists) over the years, he’s got a far better record than Townsend.
I get the impression that Reach has played a lot more as a winger than fullback and certainly played in more advanced positions whenever I've seen him so not surprising his goals and assists are better.

While we are at it Townsend cost us 750k, didn't let us down in the prem and deserves more respect than one or two comments on here (not from you I'll add).

Lol.  No one did what Pereira did last season at Chelsea. When has the £95m Pogba ever been consistent?

Undervaluing player achievements does WBA no favours whatsoever.

You can think of him as a lower Premier League player, I think otherwise.  Buendia has gone for £33m.
I'm afraid his achievements to date mean he'll be priced at the £20m - £25m mark. Pogba's a world cup winner.

I think Allardyce got it about right with his assessment

https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/west-bromwich-albion/2021/04/28/sam-allardyce-matheus-pereira-can-be-one-of-the-best-in-premier-league/

"I have worked with some world class players in my time," the boss said.

"I can’t say Matheus is world class but he certainly has the potential to be a top class Premier League player if he continues developing.
"He is still very young. And I think when he is committed and when he works as hard as he did against Aston Villa, when he shows that ability – then he is certainly a big difference and a big game player for West Brom.

2 words Stamford Bridge.

Playing in a poor team also.

If it's WHU, will be the best £25m they've ever spent.
It takes more than that to justify the top class champions league player statement. He may go on to justify that label but he has a way to go yet.

He’s a champions league player, and a top class one at that. We need to get every penny we can and hope he goes to a great club where he gets to show how good he is.
I'm afraid his price tag isn't going to reflect that. His next move may get him in the position where he has the opportunity to show he has the consistency and ability to justify that sort of rating but he's not there yet.

mate you should watch that game again even before sending off we were better team. Dingle Sam should of kept the midfield two but could not change it quick enough.
Like I've said one game does not prove any point one way or the other.

I don’t think it would be using a model that assumes the worst, I think it’s sensible based on the industry we are in. Theres no point putting VIs (or any other manger likely to turn up at WBA) ideology through the entire academy. Realistically we are likely to have 5 managers before a 10 year old makes a debut for us (or signs for Villa)
Yeah 10 year olds is taking it a bit far but I'd say there is some point with the under 18s. Our lads were clearly behind Villa in terms of physical development in the Youth cup semi. Hopefully that side of it is being looked at also whether under the influence by VI or not.

Personally the only youth side I’d have matching the first team would be the U23s.

What’s the point in the 16 year olds abandoning full backs, the chances of VI lasting four years are slim.  In fact I’d possibly argue for 4-4-2 in the younger teams as it’s going to allow any type of player to flourish.
I see your point but some of last years under 18s are already training with the 1st team and featuring in some of the pre season games. Also we can't really work off a model which assumes the manager is going to depart long before his contract ends.

...and as Ismael has a 4 year contract it certainly makes sense to have some consistency in style of player across the age groups.

best game of season was when we battered the eventual champions league winners on their own patch. Okay and AMN centre partnership with Matheus given licence to roam in front of those two. Absolutely ran riot that day.
Yeah but that particular game doesn't prove anything about formation. The Chelsea sending off impacted the game - we were one down and went on the front foot which obviously suited Pereira. I'm not trying to say that formation never worked but there have certainly been plenty of games where we've been outnumbered and outworked in midfield with that formation.

Pereira always looks much less effective when played wide though, which is what Allardyce kept doing.
But then again Pereira probably had his best games under Allardyce. As good as Pereira is he sometimes gave us a balance issue. Having a solid midfield 3 of Yokuslu, Gallagher and AMN gave Pereira more freedom even though he was nominally starting wider. Whether Championship or Prem we sometimes got outnumbered in midfield through Pereira being a very attack minded No 10 leaving two CMs battling away behind him (the 3-0 Leicester game being a classic example where we were up against 3 quality midfield players). Other managers will be looking at where he is going to fit into their systems - as good as the figures look it's not all about the goals and assist stats.

Yes Biles was under a lot of pressure due to the level of expectation on her. Not everyone can be happy go lucky with it like Usain Bolt. Gymnastics requires a phenomenal level of precision which would be impossible to achieve unless you're close to spot on mentally.

I think he'll end up lower championship/top league one kind of area.

After an impressive first game of the 18/19 season, you'd struggle to say he impressed in any of his starts after that. He certainly had chances, though relatively limited. Like a lot of our academy players he never seemed to build on, and always seemed to be on the periphery of games. Still he was a rounded player with a lot to like but I don't think he has any outstanding attitribute which you pretty much need to have to make it at a higher level.
He had chances in the team but like a lot of our academy prospects never got a proper run of games. Others have quiet games but stay in the team but our home grown lads have a quiet game and they disappear for a while longer.

They are a much bigger club than us and.that is why they are leaving it is not rocket science.
....and a richer club who will be offering more money in their contract offers. Don't know what proportion of his wage Newport would be paying.

Aziz loaned out to Newport County
...and County manager Flynn thanks Villa for their cooperation...no doubt keeping things very sweet for similar signings in future.

The focus of their investment now seems to be paying £1m fees for players around the 19 - 21 age groups. There are worse strategies but whether they can get a strong enough squad together to challenge is doubtful. I suspect any new manager will be expected to get in the play-offs again minimum regardless of the fact they've lost their parachute payments.

Aren't Swansea one of the clubs lauded as much better run than us?
They are more consistent in their managerial selections than us...that is they try to stick to the 'Swansea way' instigated by Martinez and Rogers. There's no getting away from the fact that over the past decade a lot of players have left there for significant fees (Joe Roden the most recent) and only a relatively small proportion has been re-invested on incoming players. It sounds as though this has had an impact on Cooper's decision. More young players seem to get a path into the 1st team at Swansea than us but that's partly out of necessity due to the lack of significant new signings.

Generally not a fan of '6-fest' cricket but might go and see a couple of games (no wonder batsmen struggle in test cricket these days). It would be 'Welsh fire' for me in Cardiff. Slightly controversial branding as the loose catchment area for the franchise is Glamorgan + Gloucestershire + Somerset.

Still the fact remains they do little in the grand scheme of things. If they comfort people thats fine, i don't care whether someone wears one or not but lets not call them something they are not -medically essential.

Definitely wouldn't disagree with that.
It's a bit more than 'comfort people' though. Of course they don't stop a pandemic in it's tracks but we don't actually know how many more cases there would have been without any face masks over the past 15 months.

There are also many very good cloth masks that have good / very good effectiveness - triple layer, correct thread count, properly tested. Another shocker...some masks are better than others.
