Who are the best club in England for producing young players?
« on: August 10, 2018, 10:11:46 PM »
Watching the Yanited - Leicester game and seeing how Leicester gave young Ben Chilwell at left back (to go with Harvey Barnes and Hamza Choudhury in England's under 21 set up), its got me thinking about which club is the best in England at producing academy players.

Can't really look past Villa for me.

Steven Davis, Ciaran Clarke, Jonathan Hogg, Marc Albrighton and Gary Cahill all currently playing in the premier league (Daniel Sturridge also had 3 years there before moving to Coventry while Jordan Graham is still at Wolves....for now).

Jack Grealish coveted by Spurs all summer.

Their role call of championship registered players is huge as well.

Donacien at Ipswich, Johnson,  Robinson and Burke at Preston, Williams and Whittingham at Blackburn, Carruthers at Sheff Utd, both Gardeners at Birmingham, Barry and Myhill with us, Baker and Weimann at Bristol City, Lichaj at Hull, Bannan at Sheff Wed, and that's without naming the countless players in the MLS, Scotland, Netherlands and other foreign leagues.

For a team sitting outside of the almost industrial production at clubs like Man City and Chelsea, that is an incresibly impressive output.

bearing in mind it wasn't until 4/5 years ago that their fortunes started to take a downturn and it's not surprising, they were THE team in the area for a couple of decades, it's understandable that they would've had the cream of the local crop and we would be seeing the results of their dominance during the 90's to mid 2000's.

Everton have done similar with Barkley, Mustafi, Shane Duffy, Rooney etc. even in the shadow of Liverpool. It's that level where Villa were not many that many seasons ago.

Spurs have had a good academy in recent times; Kane, Carroll, Bentaleb, Caulker, Winks, Pritchard, Mason, Townsend etc

Used to get really good players come through at crewe ie. Danny murphy, dean ashton, david platt, seth johnson, robbie savage. more recently, rob hulse, ashley westwood, nick powell,  nicky maynard, billy jones, luke murphy, a lot that would be solid champ level players, shame club like crewe cant keep hold of them as potentially they could be established 2nd tier club
