West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Carlos Corberan

The infuriating thing for me is he can have us playing excellent but as soon as he thinks it's a game to go cautious we look terrible. This is not a side that benefits from being cagey/wiley whatever.

That's hit the nail on the head.  We just don't have the players to be cautious.  Look at Kipre, can look fine most of the time, but tonight he looked like he'd never seen a football before.  He was tripping over his own feet.  Same goes for most of the defence - their touches were so bad an unsure it let Southampton close us down and force us into panicky passes.

Neither is Thomas Asante

Indeed, he's touched the ball once.  The problem wasn't Wallace - it was the "sit tight" tactics.  It instilled fear, let Southampton get on top and the crowd behind them.  We've been cagey all game and just haven't played like we did in the first leg.

They’ve learnt nothing letting the midfielder run through again

Oh well

I think Ok and Mowatt were part of the reason for the loss tonight.  Neither of them had a good game, they didn't get a foothold in the middle, or get us up the pitch.  Both gave away the ball a lot and put us under pressure.

Carlos has had to change things but it's made things worse by just leaving massive gaps in the middle of the pitch.

Penalty.  Gave the ball away cheaply - AGAIN.  They break and there's nobody in the central midfield.  Very similar to their 2nd.

5
Feel like this finish is about right for us.  We've done well to be in the playoffs all season but we've never been comfortable enough to challenge the 4 teams above - they've been in a different league.

6
Feels like we never came to win the game tonight with CC team selection and tactics. I think he was hoping for a penalty shootout

Feels like you're right.  We never looked like we were setting out to score until we went behind.

7
Nothing to do with lack of fight, tried to defend throughout and only show any forward momentum when we go a goal down.

We've not even fought though.  We've conceded possession all over the pitch as cheaply as you can.  Every single player has done it.

Mowatt off for Weimann.  Desperation from Carlos - we've got no-one in the middle of the pitch - take a CH off or something.

Actually, apart from the financial aspect, I prefer being in the top end of the Championship to getting thrashed week in week out in the Premier League and probably getting relegated.

I prefer to see my club play on the top stage.  May as well say let's drop down a few divisions so we can win every week.

9
So easy.  Literally just ran through the midfield - nobody was there.  Defence back off and back off and then one simple pass and it's a goal.

10
for the love of god Reach is on.

11
It's so weird.  We've suddenly started pressing them now and making Southampton panic.  Like we did in the first leg.

12
M'Vila has learned nothing from that first 60 mins and nearly costs us another.

13
Picked the wrong team and then it has all been down hill from there. If I am honest I never really gave us much of a chance in the play-offs no matter who we got, they are a free-hit from my point of view.

I just don't understand why Carols had us so negative after the first leg when we matched them.

14
Grady has been the pick, but it's not like the rest of the team are passing it around smartly.  We're losing the ball all over the pitch in sloppy ways.

15
Great tackle Kipre

It was a clear pen. Got away with it after a poor clearance from Palmer.

16
Awful from Grady.  Still loads of time to stop it but Mowatt and Townsend just trotted back as usual.

Hopefully this makes us actually try and score now.

17
Have not seen much of Wallace, but that's not his fault. If we get some good through passes, I trust Wallace to finish better than BTA.

I can't even think of one ball into him that he's had even a chance of getting on the end of.  We're just crowded out as soon as we try and get it forward because we're sitting too deep.

18
I don't even know what we're trying to do, what's our approach here?  Just hope that Southampton don't score and it goes to pens?

Everyone's just stopping and waiting for someone else to do something.  Palmer's punching simple catches out and trying to get dispossessed himself.  The defence can't pass and look like they're going to trip over the ball any minute.  Midfield aren't getting any space or time on the ball.  And Wallace has chased around and nobody even seems to be looking to pass to him.

The middle of the pitch is the problem.  Grady is in there on his own as Mowatt and Okay are sitting way too deep and Fellows\Johstone are too wide and deep.  Every time he gets near the ball he has 2-3 players on him.

Defence need to start making simple passes earlier and we need to get Okay and Mowatt to step up.

Maybe change Grady for Swift.

19
Haven't seen much of Wallace.

Haven't seen much of any of our players with the ball in their half.

20
Just need to get to half time now really.

21
It's too easy.  They're just walking the ball through us.

22
Just keep playing short balls into the midfield when they're surrounded by players.  It's not working.

23
Midfield just aren't getting any of the ball.

24
Kipre looks like he's never kicked a ball at the moment. Looks really uncomfortable with it at his feet.

Leeds played a high press with such intensity first half that Norwich struggled get over half way line. I trust Carlos was watching and had his notebook out, as we would need to put in our best performance of the season were we to get to Wembley.

One way to look at is that if we play as well as we can for the next two - just two - games, then we'll most likely be in the Prem next year!
