General Football & Sports / Rugby World Cup 2023

There should be enough comment around this event to justify it's own space. Kicks off Friday 8th September with France v New Zealand.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Prem Money and Parachute payments
« on: May 27, 2018, 06:56:50 PM »
Bit of a confusing area this. I've heard people on here and in the media saying that Villa's payments have ended this season but from what I've been able to find it seems they had £41m in payments last year, 33 this year and will get £15m next year.

I'm also confused by our position. I assume we would get the 'prize' money from the premier league for being in the league this season. From memory I think it's something like £90m for finishing bottom. Now, do we get that at the start of the 2017-18 season (with potential extra place money paid at the end) ? OR do we get it now at the end of the season ? I was assuming at the end but maybe it's paid at the start to allow the promoted clubs to strengthen ?

If it was paid at the end of the season (now) why would we get the parachute money as well ?
Anyone know the exact position ?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Sturridge and team formation
« on: February 04, 2018, 10:04:39 PM »
Can we afford to play 4-4-2 with Sturridge as one of the 2 strikers ? Sturridge is unlikely to do much/any of the dropping deeper to help out an out-numbered midfield.
What's our best formation to accommodate him?
Is he an automatic selection ?

Yesterday has thrown up more than a couple of questions in my opinion. Losing Krychowiak was a big loss to our midfield but suspect we'd still have been overrun with him in the side in Yacob's place.

General Football & Sports / Joe Mahler

OK sore Welshman has to have a moan here.

What do we think re Mahler getting off scot free for both the 'gypsy boy' comment to Samson Lee AND the forearm in the face of Rob Evans ?
World Rugby wants an explanation from the 6 nations committee as to why Mahler wasn't sanctioned re 'gypsy boy'.

Regarding the forearm. In my opinion this was a sly, cowardly type offence that should have got some penalty. I noticed it on the replay at the time when they were deciding if Dan Cole had got the ball down or not. Mahler clearly had a little look, noticed Rob Evans lying next to him and directed his forearm into the face....then grinned at Evans for a couple seconds after. What message does it send to kids if they see an international player getting off scot free on both these counts ??

West Bromwich Albion FC / Ground Security

I just wondered what the views are on whether enough attention is given to it.
In my view there isn't as major events including premier league football have been mentioned fairly frequently as possible terrorist targets.
I travel up from South Wales for games and always have a small rucksack with me. Usually someone asks to take a look but it's a pretty relaxed check. I don't exactly fit the likely profile of a potential terrorist but should that come into it ?
I've only ever seen dogs i.e. spaniel type sniffer dogs at the ground once which was very soon after they announced that the terror threat had been raised.
I just get the feeling that if someone really wanted to do something they wouldn't find it too difficult the way things stand.

Have to start with Japan - stunning win. Must be one of the biggest shocks of all time in a team sport.
