I can see the argument for Grant, his goals won the game but he was anonymous up until then and his first goal the keeper did throw over the line.

Livermore had a good game.

Townsend just for me though, thought he showed the most quality.

I think this West Brom team is probably the worst team we have had since the Brian Little/ Denis Smith era.

In terms of quality you probably aren't as far off as it may initially seem,  especially our forwards. Robinson is like a poor man's Rodriguez, may get 10-12 goals, Phillips is probably our next most likely in the goal charts yet he would never have got in upfront in the Barnes, Gayle, Rodriguez era, in fact he was moved to right side of a midfield three. I maintain, for what we need Grant and Diangana are (being polite) not good enough. Hugill is a different "type" and may be beneficial to the system.

Hughes, Roberts would they get in this team? He'll yeah at their peaks.

We are playing a completely different and somewhat unique way, you have to factor that in and Val may make the the collective stronger than the individuals. Let's hope he does.

Fact remains though that our recruitment the last few years has been shambolic. That's not knocking Ken or Val during the last pre season they've been left in a very difficult position.

Windsor with a screamer and another from Faal completes the scoring.

It's interesting he mentions keeping the ball in play in todays interviews. One thing i have noticed is that our centre halves have been heading the ball out of play a lot under zero pressure.

I mentioned this before. Bartley and Ajayi have 50p heads, the ball goes anywhere when they head it. The way we play it needs to be headed into areas where we can compete and win second balls.

Harvey Barnes had a very successful spell with us so Leicester called him back in January window.
We should have that facility for Callum Morton but I think we have let him go on loan for season without recall facility. If this is so we have not been  very professional.Does any one know  the details of his loan?

According to Joe Masi we almost certainly will have a recall option on him. If you listen to the latest Baggies Broadcast podcast it's on there.

Just because we’re unbeaten doesn’t mean we’re not able to criticise where it’s warranted.

Of course. As long as it is constructive and in some way reasonably balanced.

Valball worked much better in our opening three games with Robinson, Grady and Grant, so your post doesn't make any sense.

You cant judge on three games. Squads are incomplete, lacking peak  fitness, lacking intelligence on opponents, unsure of their blue print moving forward. Etc etc etc

Quote from: seteefeet

A few minutes later however, following a tremendous challenge by Townsend, Livermore and Ajayi (AGAIN) almost conspired to set up a second by faffing about on the edge of our box.

They did yeah. Ajayi again was awful. Does he put cloggs on his feet? The ball just seems to go anywhere when he strikes it and his and Bartley's headers are the same. They are both about 6'5" and cant control a header, most of our attacks break down before they start.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Jake Livermore
« on: September 21, 2021, 11:58:01 AM »
I'm not trying to defend Jake but it's probably worth remembering what led to that goal by Preston. A god awful, lazy casual pass from Matt Phillips which should have gone to Mowatt so we could play out from there.

It was a shocking ball and Ajayi should hold his head in shame for his lame attempt of a block. He then fell to the ground while holding his head in the hope of a free kick when there was little if any contact.

Both central midfielders were completely cut out of play as a result of Phillips being slack with Mowatt the deeper of the two. At least Jake got a foot on it as he tried to close the Preston player down.

Mowatt also has a chance to close it down and doesn't. Kylle Bartley's attempt to block the shot was hardly convincing either. Collective failure. To single Jake Livermore out for the first goal is beyond harsh. It's also wrong in my very honest opinion.

Bartley annoyed me here. It was one of those half hearted, barely committed attempts at a block. Contrast that with one Townsend made in the same game or indeed the one that Bartley made in the last minute at Wolves last season. If he puts the same intensity into the block on Saturday Preston dont score.

It's not putting in that extra 5%. I absolutely guarantee if that's O'Shea or Clarke they dont score that goal.

Yes there were other errors in the lead up but the lack of  desire to defend the goal annoyed me most

I cant believe some of the things I'm reading. Not being rude but it's like being back in the playground as an eleven year old.

I used to have Albion fans down as some of the most knowledgeable in football, now, certainly not (probably) a vocal minority.

Ismael has been in charge for 8 (league games). We have lost none and are joint second and some people are talking about sharpening knives.

Words cant really describe it.

Mate I wouldn't call someone else's opinion weird.  I'm entitled to it. What I meant is that we were lucky Fulham didn't win both those games and pick up six points. That would have put them even further ahead of us making it even harder to be top two. Are you saying that Reading and Blackpool should have beaten them?  Fulham are much better and I bet their supporters aren't happy they lost to them.

Yes we are unbeaten and at first glance that looks good and equal on points with second.  But like you said the performances haven't been good and that is definitely a worry.  QPR will be much harder opposition and if we lose that one, the knives will be out in force again for Val.

You could argue Fulham are lucky we didnt win both our games. That sort of thing works both ways just depends through who's eyes you look at it.

« on: September 19, 2021, 03:09:20 PM »
When we've been pushing for a goal and left Bartley up top he's looked more of a threat and gets more involved than Hugill.

Throwing someone up top in desperation for the last 5 or 10 mins is a completely different thing to them playing 90 mins there let alone week after week. It's not even a sensible debate.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Jordan Hugill joins on loan
« on: September 19, 2021, 12:35:05 PM »
That wasn't just an awful performance - it reinforced the appearances he's made as sub.  He doesn't score goals, he doesn't make runs, he rarely wins the ball and holds it up, he doesn't get involved in play.  Like I said, we could play Bartley up top and he'd be more effective.

He wouldn't at all

Also in fairness, it was the first (vaguely) competitive game Bryan's played in since last season.

Absolutely, yes.

The stats are going to have to pick the team for this game. In this system, well in most systems, your forwards have to be productive. Phillips has to start. He has two goals and at least two assists to his name this season (at Blackburn, Peterborough) and Robinson has three goals. We are lacking riches in the forward areas so these two have to start. It's a question of who plays alongside them. For me Hugill keeps his place he's only completed one ninety minutes and has received OTT criticism. Diangana and Grant arent providing. They can be options off the bench.

I dont know how far away Matt Clarke is. I know he's in training and unless he's had a set back, given he's in training with another week under his belt he may be close. If he's ready he comes straight back in. I will presume he's not going to be ready. QPR have big men up front, Dykes and Austin and we dont want them attaching themselves to Townsend. He needs to revert to his more natural role. Ajayi can move to the left of the three keeping his place simply because of lack of options and Caleb Taylor can come in on the right. He must be looking at some of our defenders and wondering what they have to do for him to get his chance. Ismael has made noises about youngsters but so far hasnt backed up his words. Expectation too high at West Brom maybe? Well now is his chance.

At some point I want to see what Molumby is all about but for now, mainly because we dont need too many changes at once Livermore keeps his place alongside Mowatt:

      Taylor      Bartley     Ajayi

Furlong  Livermore Mowatt   Townsend

     Phillips     Hugill     Robinson.

I don't know whether you went today mate, but I can tell you that Hugill was abysmal.
As for Mowatt being hamstrung by Livermore, and the inferance that Jake should be replaced by Molumby. Jake is better.
Mowatt in the last four games has been very average, and not the player we saw in the first three games.
Is Livermore the answer to all our problems, I hope not because we have many problems

I dont know what you are watching but Mowatt was one of the brighter lights again today and he was excellent second half against Derby.

As for Jake, he should be back up. He does have his positives but he's far too slow and immobile for a midfielder and has no guile at all. I'm wondering why we signed Molumby when he hasnt kicked a ball yet.

Poor game today and too many players having bad days individually. To mention three:

Furlong's delivery all game was awful.
Ajayi was desperate, couldn't head straight, couldn't pass wind.
Diangana his usual no goals, no assists, shocking stats for a forward as this is a recurring issue.

It wasnt pretty to watch but we never looked like losing the game.

I said pre season our forwards ultimately will cost us. They arent good enough there are not enough goals in them. JRod and Gayle got 45 goals between them, plus 9 from Harvey Barnes in the half season he was with us. We will be lucky to get 35 between all of the ones we have now.

3,219 of us at Preston. That's very good.

It’s quite a feat. Releasing HRK so we can downgrade.

His “finish” at the end of the game was absolutely pathetic. I’m 57 with a bad knee and could have struck it better than that.

I was at the game. Watching it back on Quest it was nowhere near as easy a chance as I thought it was at the time. Hugill was running on fumes towards the end and maybe because of that he made the wrong choice, he shouldve taken it on his left foot and leathered it.

Hes getting far too much criticism for someone that has played one full game while other people escape such criticism despite game after game of awful performances.

Yes but just stating he didnt impress.

In fairness he was partnered by Joshua and Shotton and neither are any good.

Mind you, it's nice that Townsend has progressed from being "league one level".  ;)

Amnesia seems to be a perennial problem for football fans. I always find comments like "Its the worst game of football for the last 30 years" or "its worse than anything under______ quite amusing". I have sat through so many terrible games over the years under lots of our managers (Gould, Little, Buckley, Robson, Pulis, Pardew etc)
We are clearly not playing that well at the moment but Val has managed us for 8 competitive games and in the league we are unbeaten.

You're right mate. There wasnt even anything wrong with the second half performance the other night other than we didnt find the net. It wasnt negative  it wasnt crude and it wasnt dull.

People love to moan and they talk absolute rubbish (on social media generally) like when they try and compare Valball to Pulis. Just complete and utter nonsense.

I've seen us get trounced 5 by the likes of Crewe and Grimsby. Now that really was bad.

Wow, thats a surprise and flies in the face of our MOTM voting !

It isnt really it's just that our fans think he is much better than he actually is. They love the little flicks and the things that are easy on the eye but most of the time he's ineffective.

Dont get me wrong, it was his best performance for some time against Derby, second half, but that just emphasises the problem and despite the improvement still no goal and no assist. First half he was awful, improved after the break.

He's a forward in this system and has to contribute goals and assists, that's what wins you games not some nutmeg on the touchline.
