Love the Ryder cup. Was lucky enough to go for a week in 2014 and met some of the players briefly. Some were great, some less so.

Sadly I don’t see we have a chance. With a pure US crowd it would be great to win, but there’s just too much of a gulf in class between the teams this year in my opinion.

Sadly I’ll not see much at all as I’m away this weekend. Hopefully I’ll see the Albion and the Joshua fight but I’ve no chance of sitting for hours to on end watch the golf.

I genuinely think it will be pretty much over by Sunday. I think it’ll start like Medinah, But not finish like it.

I don’t think Usyk will beat him.

He has a fighter chance, but the difference in bang from a cruiser weight to open weight is as big as it ever has been. Chisora took Usyk the distance and I’ve no doubt Joshua would lay chisora out.

The Ruiz experience will have knocked some complacency out of Joshua and I’d back him to finish this before the scorecards.

At least there is one other club who seem to have been screwed over as much as we have.

Liverpool ‘academy product’ Kaide Gordon started tonight, 6 months after being signed from Derby. Liam Delap at city was also signed / pinched from Derby.

Being able to demand reasonable fees for those two could have stopped Derby needing to enter administration this week.

I was at the game. Watching it back on Quest it was nowhere near as easy a chance as I thought it was at the time. Hugill was running on fumes towards the end and maybe because of that he made the wrong choice, he shouldve taken it on his left foot and leathered it.

Hes getting far too much criticism for someone that has played one full game while other people escape such criticism despite game after game of awful performances.

It wasn’t an easy chance at all, but it was the complete lack of connection and conviction that was disappointing. It was a very disappointing attempt.

On paper, the next three are tougher than the last three. We can’t be dropping more points if we are going to fight it out at the top.

If we start playing it out from the back we really will have problems . Remember what a disaster it was under Big Dave when we did that ! Several of the players who couldn’t cope with it then are still in the team , so expect the same outcome if we do .

Nobody is saying go full blown Barca or city, but the odd pass in our third and patience would do us the world of good

Can’t disagree with any of that. However, when team defend in low blocks (like the last three have) you have to play out from the back to draw them out their shape. Also, what’s the point in playing 3 at the back if you aren’t going to use the centre halves in possession? But I agree you also need to vary it up at certain points in games.

I think we are on the same page. If during the second half we had said ok, it’s not working and knocked it about a bit at the back it would have made sense, draw them out. If they don’t come out you knock it about in there third. Keep changing the pace

Surely not? Our fans will tell you that “playing out from the back” is the worst thing in modern football and you have to “get it forward” and “get it in the box”.

The same fans are now moaning that the football is rubbish to watch. Genuinely couldn’t make it up.

I know you are taking the **** but to answer seriously, I always find a mixture is best. Keep teams guessing. It’s ok to have blueprint and stick to it 70% of the time but you also need judge situations.,It’s frustrating because it seems like some very small tactical changes, coupled with some intelligence on the pitch to change the way we play in spells is the way forward.

We need temp teams out more I think. A few passes at the back actually creates space further up and we seem intent on putting teams under too much pressure which results in a compacted defensive third

That was a waste of my Saturday afternoon. I’m posting this, then enjoying the rest of my weekend as I can’t be bothered to watch, listen or read anything about the Albion right now.

The bottom line is that was completely unacceptable and as a club we’re much better than this. Peterborough, Milwall, Derby and now Preston, we’ve been  ******* dreadful.

As bad as it is, there’s still nobody looked like beating us, there’s something lacking though going forwards. Some composure, some neat passing. In the three draws there’s not been Great saves. Derby keeper got credit but it was mostly bread and butter. Our total shots are misleading

There’s just a cutting edge missing, and there shouldn’t be in this division with our relative talent. I think tactics have a lot to say on this.

Really poor from Phillips and I don't want to be over-critical but Johnstone seemed to move very slowly. Haven't been playing bad really they're passing it rather than lumping it but like i said previously, we need to be smarter in their half as we've been in good positions.

Not a SJ fan but in my experience when keepers are going one way and try to switch they usually look flat footed because of how they have to adjust and transfer their weight whilst also getting down quickly. I’m not sure he could do a great deal

Preston wanting Hugill sent off. Looked painful but no intent at all, completely accidental and jumped in to his elbow

I’m going to predict we are better / luckier in front of goal today and we score first 25 mins. The game will then suit us.

Despite the Millwall result, I think us and Fulham are two sides in this division you don’t want to go a goal down against.

It’s been said we’ve struggled when sides have matched us up with a 3-5-2 in the last three games, which is what Preston play with, but it’s only Millwall where I would say we truly struggled.

I fancy us to play well today, i feel like we'll have to come and out and respond after 2 mediocre performances and results at home, and lets be honest we have to keep in touch with the likes of fulham right now.

It feels like we could really do with it, which is crazy considering we are second and unbeaten.  I think we will win today, but I thought that the last two as well.

On the international compo issue, I read somewhere that fifa / uefa only provide compo when players are injured during summer tournaments and not for mid season games. Would explain why he couldn’t answer with certainty

I actually don’t think the likely relegation is harsh enough, The penalties for any football club leaving unsecured creditors  up **** creek should be way harsher. It’s normal, probably many local, people who get hit. Derby will be back paying players thousands in no time.

I know other businesses in other sectors do it, but they aren’t generally at the heart of the community they screw over, nor is it nearly 100% certain they will be back.

I'm sure it's not possible or a ridiculous thought but, is it possible for us to be awarded the point that Derby 'earned' off us?

Only if they were thrown out would anything like that happen, and results would be scrubbed

There’s some decent youth at Derby. We should strike a few early deals with the administrators for Jan

Percy just Tweeted

Statement imminent from Derby to announce they are appointing administrators. Situation with EFL still unresolved over possible points deduction. In short, a mess.

That’s another 12 points I’d it not? 21 point deduction and bust

« on: September 15, 2021, 03:06:57 PM »
I hate time wasting, but as Liam pointed out, we can’t complain.

It’s a major change but doesn’t strictly change the game… I’d be happy to see the game go to a clock that stopped when the ball was out of play. Find out the Normal ball in play time and whether that’s 60mins, 65mins or whatever, play to that. Technically the game length shouldn’t change if injury time is accurate (we all know it’s not).

Is there another way of looking at it though?

We looked decent in our first 3 games, against 3 sides aiming for top 6 finishes. Luton and Sheff Utd in particular tried to play football against us which allowed us to use the press effectively and create a lot of scoring opportunities. Barnsley had the advantage last season of sides rarely sitting back against them and they were able to get into the playoffs with a limited first 11. Further evidence has Ismael’s LASK team reaching the last 16, hammering a Bruno Fernandes led Sporting club de Portugal 3-0 and PSV 4-1 on the way.

Our difficulties have come vs P’boro, Milwall and now Derby, all of whom set up very defensively, looked to get rid of the ball as quickly as they could and for large phases of the game didn’t really commit many men forward.

Now which style of approach are we likely to face in the event of promotion? Will premier league sides sit deep against the small budgeted WBA, or will they more often than not play on the front foot with the ball being passed out from the back?

At the moment we are lacking a couple of key players to make this work - one being a centre forward and another I’d argue being a midfielder with more creativity who can play as part of the front 3. In the premier league we will have more money and might be able to buy somebody to make it work.

I’m not saying it definitely works in the prem, but there is more evidence that it works well vs footballing sides who push forward than there is that it works vs defensive ones. I don’t think we can take Milwall’s and Derby’s tactics as evidence it doesn’t work at a higher level.

Ultimately, we will be one of the poorest sides in the division in the event of promotion. There is no evidence that we have either the scouting system or the clever boardroom level operators to make up the gap on those who have more spending power and so in the short to medium term atleast, Ismael’s slightly unique approach might well be our best bet.

My bigger concern is how you get out of the division playing in such a one dimensional way. He needs to show his managerial ability now and work out a fix.

You may be right. Hopefully we get promoted and find out.

However I’d put your thoughts on this particular matter alongside those that claimed Krovinovic would be more suited to the prem. I think it’s romantic / hopeful at best that the struggle wouldn’t just be worse against better sides if the blue print was copied and pasted.

Better players would obviously help us, but then so would some tactical flexibility.

Although I don’t think we needed to change anything last night. We had enough control and enough chances, we just lacked the cutting edge as you said in your first post match comment.

Well that was my Valball Hawthorns debut and well, it's dreadful isn't it? Particularly in the first half.

there is no way this translates to a higher level and as such, is there any real future in it?

Very early on I said I was worried it wouldn’t translate either.  Like you I’m now pretty confident it won’t. .

We’d look like Millwall did on Saturday, only Prem sides would take advantage. Lump it forwards, get played through, penned and repeat.

There must be another reason Robinson was withdrawn, has to have been under the weather or injuried, surely.

We lacked a cutting edge as has already been said. Diangana had shades of his old self in the second half though.

Hopefully Preston being at home they have to show a bit more ambition than Millwall and Derby which will hopefully play in to our hands.

The one positive is there is still not really a side who has looked like really beating us but it is two poor results at home in reality where we should have put some real daylight between us and the pack. It’s no good saying it’s fine we are top after so few games.

I’ll give it until 10 games before I really start to judge VI but there’s some reasonable concerns. I do think tonight was just one of those games though and when we do that to sides we will win more than we lose. We are capable of some decent football and we don’t need to be hoofing it as much as we do.

The press and energy can still work with the talent we have with a few tweaks and choosing when to lump it and when to play is key if VI can accept it.  In this division we should be smart enough to know when we’ve got teams playing for a draw and adjust accordingly.
