Title: 2021/22 Kit
Post by: mini gaardsoe on May 17, 2021, 10:27:54 AM
Liquidator podcast suggesting we’ve gone with ‘Penguin’ Home Kit next season, navy in the middle with white either side, navy sleeves.

Away to be yellow and dark (probably black) 3rd.

I imagine there will be a ‘no stripes’ meltdown but got to change it up slightly in this era of new kits each season.

Although it's being billed (no pun intended) as a 'penguin' kit - is it not just very thick stripes?
Obviously we need to see it before too much can be said but the classic Regis era kit (that Puma did in their first season) wasn't far off being 3 thick stripes

So it’s the 18/19 kit but the stripes are slightly wider? I’m down with that.

Tbh, i have always thought, that if Albion had to wear a kit not involving stripes, something based on Ajax’s kit would be the one. I always like us to be in proper stripes, but do like this one.

Nice change as long as with the pinstripe kit it is for one season only. Although it is difficult with how many times you can redesign a striped kit.
Title: Re: 2021/22 Kit
Post by: SmethDan on May 17, 2021, 03:02:15 PM
I would have thought it easier to design a decent striped kit than not. We're not talking about reinventing the wheel. All a kit designer needs to do is make blue and white stripes look like blue and white stripes.

Why do they have to make it so bloody difficult for themselves? New kits don't need to be evolutionary. They just need to vary slightly. People who buy new kits every season would still buy them in most cases.

I love the template and would happily have it for an away or third but it just doesn't work as a home kit for me. I know working with stripes is difficult to come up with new concepts. At 23 I may be one of these 'modern' fans that this is supposed to appeal to but it just doesn't.

Just kidding Zac 😃

If the new shirt had a two-button grandad collar like the one used in the home shirt for the 16/17 season (albeit using red trimming to match the red on the sleeves) it would actually look nice. Not traditional Albion, but nice none the less 👍🏻

I’m never bothered about the kit at all really, just find that it’s something for people to moan about in pre season when there is no football and no one gives a damn once it’s started..... But I only don’t moan as long as it’s blue and white stripes!

How hard is it really, West Bromwich Albion play in blue and white stripes and have done for 130+ years,  that was the one thing that no matter how bad people were upstairs they couldn’t really mess up and it looks as if they have  :o

Definitely Bartley wearing it. He has a clock on his left forearm which is clearly visible in the screenshot.

As for the shirt, it's not my favourite by any means, but it will make player tracking tech a lot easier for us to use. No more being excluded from the analysis because the AI can't track us properly!

Yes similar template but blue and white for me. That said I've always thought a black, red & white combo like the Black Country flag would be good for an away or 3rd kit.

The promotion seasons under Gary Megson were particularly poor........ as was the year we won our only league title and the season we went up as FA Cup winners.

Didn't we wear blue socks for a lot of games when we were promoted under Tony Mowbray too? I prefer white socks but I won't get too upset if they're blue.

Must be an age thing. Now I've seen the three together the black one's the worst for me. Looks like the kind of pattern the Vile would wear   ;) .

There is far too much happening on that yellow kit for me to make head nor tail of it.

I'm not a fan of the home shirt, but i do have some sympathy for the people who make these decisions. There's only so much one can do with Navy & White stripes. I've not minded the barcode or the pinstripes. They give an option and the next year we tend to go back to standard stripes. Keeps it interesting at least.

A Black/Red and a Yellow/Yellow & Green would pretty much always be my choice of 2nd and 3rd kits (either way around)

A HUGE win for the board would be to have a 3rd kit for 2 seasons (obviously we'd need the manufacturer & the sponsor to be the same for the period). It would be a great move, ensure sales of it and be some good PR.

Best shirt in recent years was three years ago when we had Barnes, Holgate etc. Outstanding shirt.

My favourite away shirt was the green a navy shirt worn by krychoviak and co in that awful season.

I’ve never liked the barcode shirt but equally not really a fan of the new shirt. It’s not offensive but it’s just not Albion.

Normally I’d agree that the reactions to shirts is over the top, but I don’t think I do in this case. That home shirt just isnt an Albion shirt.

Like the badge (which I appreciate they sadly have messed with), certain things should be untouchable. The home shirt should be blue and white stripes, the club full name should be West Bromwich Albion and the ground should be the Hawthorns.

For me at least, some things should be sacred.

I actually quite like the look of these if the Twitter mock-ups are anything close to what they will be.  The dark/black one is nice and the home although not a traditional WBA kit, is nice with the thick stripe down the middle and blue sleeves.  The yellow is very much like the 'Arsenal bruised banana' kit of the 80's/90's and probably my least fave of the three.

The black one reminds me of a Villa kit and the yellow one Arsenal. I hope the actual kits are far better than them. The home one is actually decent, not exactly Albion, but if you class the big navy bit in the middle as a stripe it sort of works, .... sort of.

From what Ive seen I think it is a disgrace. It shows whoever thought this was the right design has no idea what the Albion are and has no regard or feelings for the supporters. Whats next a gold and black or claret and blue kit. Its a joke on the back of the lack of investment its another slap in the face as far as Im concerned. Its the same as Cardiff when the owner changed their kit from blue to red. What's next a change from the hawthorns to the Lai stadium or changing the badge to a chinese proverb.

A bit O.T.T.

It's still navy and white (home). That I think is the the most important thing.

Controversial, maybe, but I prefer it to the bloody barcode.

Shirt No 1 :  Ok understood that they have to ring the changes to sucker us into buying a new shirt each season - our fault if we do.

Shirt No 2:  Does this make it difficult to pick out your own players on a dark winter's afternoon with lots of supporters wearing dark clothes in the bottom 10 rows?

Shirt No 3:  Fussy, messy  and showy, no link with the Albion.  Why not yellow with very thin green stripes?

A bit O.T.T.

It's still navy and white (home). That I think is the the most important thing.

Controversial, maybe, but I prefer it to the bloody barcode.

This in bold is the most important thing.

Personally I would like a late 60's kit with narrow stripes white arms, white shorts white socks. Looks class.

Good or bad it ain't Albion so its a NO.

Every time I look at that I see Kenny Burns and Trevor flaming Francis - Disgraceful,

would the Noses wear stripes ??? Thought not

This Blues thing is actually starting to annoy me. Keep it up and you and me going to be stepping outside.  ;D.

First point Blues have a completely different shade of blue that completely transforms any kit.

Second point, Blues wouldnt wear stripes. Well, that have, Villa have, Southampton, Coventry, Stoke etc all have interchanged between stripes and non stripes.

Third point, we havent worn stripes right throughout our history, we've worn a variety of kits including all white with red socks during the 68 cup run.

As long as we are navy and white, at home, I can live with it although obviously I'd prefer stripes.

I'm actually more annoyed that the yellow / green has gone.

Told you lot before, I need to run the club. We'd have none of these problems then.  8)

We’d struggle with that even if we played in luminous yellow with flashing lights sewed on. 😂

One of my favourite kits was the black away shirt under Mowbray.  Wonderful shirt.

Why is it OTT? Its our identity. Were fans even consulted- No. We are just the suckers who have to eat whatever rubbish is served up to us. What changes are too much for you? Are the stripes as fundamental as our name or where the ground is?

Our name is paramount. Our ground hmm different issue and I suspect a toxic one amongst the fan base, should a new stadium be proposed.

The design of the kit isnt nearly as important but I do agree with you that fans should be considered and consulted.

The black one reminds me of a Villa kit and the yellow one Arsenal. I hope the actual kits are far better than them. The home one is actually decent, not exactly Albion, but if you class the big navy bit in the middle as a stripe it sort of works, .... sort of.

We did pretty well in it last time from what I remember?

4-1 at Everton springing to mind, any other good results in that kit people can recall?

if stripes truly matter, how many do there need to be before they can be considered in line with our identity, is there a fixed thickness? The much loved thick stripes of the 70’s were a complete departure from the 100-odd years of kits that went before it, yet to some it’s quintessential.

Its not about what it is, its about what it represents.

I could handle the yellow and blue as a third kit, especially if it had pinstripes as I mentioned earlier. As for red the last Albion top I had was the red Adidas Bodog sponsored shirt which was bought for me. It was ok.

So what changes are ok before its not the Albion any more? As I said before if stripes don't matter then neither does the colour. To me its like if Liverpool changed their home kit from Red to Blue. Its a complete departure but so what. Seems to me that it is this lack of regard that has led to some thinking relegation is not quintessential to football.

1942-1947. We played without stripes because plain material was cheaper and easier to come by as a result of wartime shortages. I have no idea whether other teams followed suit at the time but definitely remember reading that as an explanation for us doing away with the stripes back then.

why do I care about Liverpool fans’ opinions, their kit constantly changes shade and pattern and they don’t notice.

This is about the Albion and at the root of this, you’re upset because the middle stripe of 3 is too thick.. that’s it. Nobody is changing colours, or changing the name. It’s a slightly wider stripe.

I've only just seen the 'digital' picture of the three kits, my phone didnt show it earlier.

In that picture of the home shirt it doesn't look as bad as the imagine circulating where it looks like Bartley is wearing it.  The digital version it looks closer to stripes, where as the perspective of the Bartley image makes the centre blue look much wider and more dominating of the shirt.

So it sounds pedantic but for me it really will depend in reality on the thickness of the blue when which we need more images off. It isnt dissimilar to the reverse of why i didnt like the pinstripe, even though technically you could say it was blue and white stripes.

I'm not having that one big thick blue panel is just a thick stripe, we all know what shouts West Brom and what doesn't.

I don't think their fans have ever protested about the shirts - yes major things like trying to join a breakaway competition which would have seen them forgo their place in the domestic league, but not which shade of red the shirt is or whether there is a woven pattern in it.
As ever, the simplest way to protest about a kit is not to buy it. And I'd wager that these will be in shorter supply anyway post pandemic the club will have taken a hit on last year's shirts so may well not order as many for this year in case of reduced demand.

Possibly an interesting 'clue' - the online shop has released the latest '2021' edition of the Oddballs underwear range, which last season featured the barcode pattern in home, away and third colours and previously has mirrored the kit design to some degree.

https://shop.wba.co.uk/featured-collections/featured/oddballs/2565_oddballs-21-mens-boxers.html (https://shop.wba.co.uk/featured-collections/featured/oddballs/2565_oddballs-21-mens-boxers.html)

I don’t mind the home shirt, actually. I know it’s not traditional and it won’t be everyone’s favourite.

I was dealing with a rugby club before Christmas at work and was talking to someone who was involved in marketing and merchandise. Like football, they change their home kits annually but they work theirs on a three year cycle. They have one year as a traditional shirt, one year a remake of a retro shirt and one year where their shirt is a bit out of left field.

I wouldn’t be against a similar approach for our home kits.

The away kit is charcoal grey with fine stripes going around it and the third kit is yellow much like the concept images that were put on this thread a couple of pages back. The home strip is the one of Kyle Bartley in the tunnel area as shown on page 1. Perreria, Townsend, Robinson and Bartley are modelling the kit this year.

Has Mowett revealed our away or third kit there or is that a training top?! Either way I very much like it!

Believe it’s a training top. Same as what the squad had on yesterday. Would have made a nice 3rd kit.

Never buy anything without a full view - whats the back of the shirt like?  Seems to be all one colour (ie.no stripe at all)

Edit - just got in to club shop and seen it.  Why the red numbers -white would be more visible and in the navy blue and white tradition.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to our kit though, so I don't like it as an Albion shirt.

Looks like I'm in a minority but, as a "stars in stripes" traditionalist, I don't like the new shirt. I probably like it better than the bar code abomination, but that's about it. It's like an inverse image of the Blues 1970s Francis/Hatton/etc era shirt. Blues, of course, aren't associated with playing in stripes.

It's not ugly, it's just not Albion IMO.

Spot on.
Would I be right in saying that pinstripe kit was one of the best sellers for a home kit in a number of years?

Don’t get how people can get so wound up over it, it will be a different style for one year then revert back to stripes, if it’s not to your taste don’t buy it, simple really.

Why does much have to be done with them? I'm sure people by (for example) Liverpool's and Man U's new shirts in droves each time, but the designers are constrained by them having to be virtually plain on every occasion. There's very little they can do with that and they don't try to, they just tinker around at the margins. On that basis, I don't see why we have to keep departing so radically from a basic stripes concept.

Not an expert by any means but I always thought there was a lot of crossover with the abrahamic religions i.e. Judaism, Christianity, Islam. Jesus is acknowledged in Islam and regarded as a prophet though not as important as Muhammad.

Bhuddists might be a bit non plussed mind.

It should really be more offensive to me as an atheist but I just take it as a tradition of the club rather than having any religious intent in this context.

According to the Islamic Holy book, the Qur'an, God has sent many messengers to mankind. Five universally acknowledged messengers (rasul) are Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad,[68] each believed to have been sent with a scripture. Muslims believe David (Dāwūd) received Psalms [69] (cf. In fairness both of the home kits when we were promoted under Sir Gary had red features.

From not being overly keen initially (thought it looked a bit tacky) I'm liking this one now.

Looks much better than the pin striped tea towel of a few seasons back and I can see this one going on to rival it sales wise.

You could always go FKW mode (£92), spend £6 on a Stile Card holder and a couple of pencils to qualify for free postage at £100 once you've filled your online basket with goodies.

That or wait for the release of the away top and kill two birds with one stone. It makes perfect economic sense spending that much to avoid being ripped off with a £4 postage fee.

Take my money and COYB and all that stuff, you'd be quids in...... or out.

(Ed: just thought.

No need for the Stile Card holder if you download the season ticket app. However, there's always the option to personalise the top for the bargain price of £15 to trigger the 'free'/postage paid delivery.

FKW 1 would look great with the matching shorts and socks  ;D ) .

Nothing childish about it. Our normal kit is navy blue and white stripes, many of us do not like this new kit as we have moved away from our normal design and we now look a bit like a blues team from the 80's.

It is a marmite kit and it has divided opinion. If you like it then good for you, no one will call you anything for buying one but you cannot say it is childish because some folk don't like it.

Hopefully it is a strip that will come to be associated with a very good team and will grow on us, but at £55 a pop many of us will be keeping our money in our pocket, and there is nothing childish about that.

the site clearly states the discount should be applied at checkout as the link from SmethDan shows.

Could be a one off or could be across the board that nobody has had it applied so far.

I think TLMS is a tad small time.

Can’t agree. The theme of the Psalm runs through so much of the club’s identity, we see videos using it as an introduction, the words are around the ground and in a way it’s almost a USP for Albion. The Lord’s My Shepherd isn’t something that the club dreamt up, it was brought to the Hawthorns by the supporters, it’s not a cheap marketing ploy or ruse that was the brainchild of some marketeer, it’s something that is ingrained into the Albion.

Blending it into the shirt is a really imaginative and to some extent “nice” touch, and for one I think it’s great to see the club embrace the culture of the supporters.

I agree with you Chipper, it's a nice touch. I cannot think it will affect one way or the other, peoples decision to purchase or not, but it is indeed something that is unique to our club

Couldn't agree more. TLMS is in the clubs DNA and I shall look forward to belting it out after every goal next season.

I like the new shirt, even though the stripes (2 white and 1 blue) aren't as obvious as in years gone by I like the creativity shown. I quite liked the pinstripe one and that was even more of a departure.
I can see why others don't like it though.
As an aside, I thought last seasons shirt was dull and unimaginative.

I'll be buying it

I think football shirts are now at rip-off prices.  £55 for a football shirt or I can get two golf polos from Puma for the same price !

As for the design, I like the look but its not a Baggies shirt in my view.

Just to be pedantic does it say "The Lord's my shepherd" or "The Lord is my Shepherd"?
Any one here know how does The Book of Common Prayer spell it out?

I believe it's the Lord is my shepherd. but then the words are more archaic:
Psalm 23

(from Day 4 Evening Prayer)

Dominus regit me

THE Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing.
He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
He shall convert my soul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Went through to the checkout and no discount added for me. Was logged in with my albion account..

Also, slightly miffed about the sizing for kids. My lad is 3, 3-4 last season just about fit him and the next size up is 5-6 which will bury him. Surprised there's no 4-5..

Same issue with my just gone 3 year old he had 3-4 last season which was snug like a Kappa shirt. The 5-6 fits him in the chest but goes down to his thighs.

Home kit looks "ok" from a distance, still "missing" a stripe though IMO. Don't like it close up at all, TLMS shouldn't be written into it, we have literally plastered religious nonsense (that for some reason became something we sing when we score) on to our shirt, Should be staying well away from that.

As for the orange and grey/orange and white pre season "leisure wear" stuff.... whoever signed that off clearly knows nothing about the club - we don't do orange, what's next? a claret and blue training kit?

Given that they've made it "limited edition" I can't help but feel someone in the marketing dept testing the water to see if they can ever sell anything with that colour. Hopefully no one buys it.

Agree re: TLMS I said a few pages back it is small time and I stand by that.

And the phrase ‘limited edition’ is just a swizz, all training gear is ultimately limited edition because we have two sets per season in different colours, not set like the blue and white stripes.

Are sizes same as last years?
I’m normally L, but last year I had to go XL.
So would I be fine getting the XL in this seasons?

I'm not keen on either kit this year but at least it's not that Bristol one. As BaggieNick said, graphic equaliser.

As someone else said, let's just worry about the quality of the players wearing them. I've got a good feeling though...

Im told the away shirt is black and red stripes, I’ve no reason to disbelieve who I’ve heard that from.

I'd be having a word with them..... :D

It's black- don't mind black but black is boring. Black is not a colour- it is an absence of colour.

It's got bits of red on it. Don't mind red. We had a red second strip once- lost a lot of away games in it.

It has an Albion badge on it. Love the Albion badge. This Albion badge is red. Albion badges are not red, liverpiddle, Man Utd etc are red, NOT Albion.

Albion will play in this strip so will support it, do not have to like it.

this season’s Bristol kit? The one designed by Hummel and looks nothing like ours except that its black?

https://shop.bristol-sport.co.uk/bcfc/replicakit/all-away-kits/view-all/1965_2122-BRISTOL-CITY-AWAY-SHIRT-ADULT.html

Must be another sides top ive seen then. Thought it was Bristol City’s one but I’m obviously mistaken.

It was a black Puma kit, with red on it. Thought it had a robin in the crest.

My bad

I’ve just had a look at the Barnsley away, I like it, it’s better than ours although I don’t think it’s anything like it, it’s ‘pine green’ for a start.

I remember last year starting a post about using DH gate for shirts.

I took the punt.

Was amazing value and well worth it. I bought all 3 of last season’s kits for £12 each.

I also had the original replica and when I matched them, the only noticeable difference was a slight variation in the navy blue and the IDEAL sponsor was slightly smaller on each shirt.

This seasons kits (both of them) are available again for £12 so I’m buying from the Chinese direct this year, would highly recommend to any Parents’ out there looking to kit the kids out.

The last  black one was hardly worn from memory .

It's the away kit, so unless things have changed (back to the days of a change strip where the default for all games was the home shirt), all the away games except where there is a clash.

Don’t be out off by the images pal, they can’t “market” genuine copies but if you find what you want, click customer reviews, you’ll see photos of exactly gets sent.

Honestly, for the quality at £12 it’s a no brainier. I’m avoiding the club shop for my shirts from now on.

I heard of this site last season from a newcastle pal, all the geordies use it as they don’t want to give any money to Mike Ashley.

Usually takes around 6 weeks for your item to come, the image on the website has no logo or sponsor due to legal reasons but the top you receive will be an exact copy of the official kit. Saw some of the toon ones last year and they look spot on. If you are reserved about spending 55/60 quid and don’t mind the wait then it’s the best option.

Just to add to this from experience the 5 to 6 weeks window isn’t correct. Maybe during the height of the pandemic, at the moment it’s about a fortnight.

Never pay attention to the shipping time, it’s always 2-3 weeks max.

You guys probably  it saw a load of retro England tops during the euro’s, most came from DHGate or the suppliers to the site.

I have WhatsApp’d PHBaggie and sent him the shirts I bought last year, he will vouch that you can’t tell them apart and they are brilliant copies.
