I wasn’t sure if this sort of chat should be left until next week when we will likely be down, but it’s something more positive to talk about so why not.

For me it is down to 2 players - Pereira and Johnstone - with an honourable mention for Yokuslu.

Pereira has been our best outfielder this season. Even when he was off the boil he has still contributed goals and assists. Had we been better finishers, Pereira’s assists stats would be even healthier and he has been great to watch in full flow.

For me though, Sam Johnstone gets the nod. He has been far improved on the last 2 years and while I think he could easily flop next season at a new club, the character he has shown in coming back from a lot of criticism (some sent directly to him on social media), deserves credit, so he gets a Ronnie Wallwork style nod from me.

Didn’t think I’d ever say it but Bartley has given his all all season
Quality wise Pereira all day long and Townsend hasn’t let anyone down

Between those 3 Over the full season for me

Townsend and Johnstone have both improved in my opinion
Does that make them player of the season candidates? No.

It would make them most improved and I would agree.

If you think Periera for instance had played better overall even if expected then I’d say Periera would be your Player of the Season.

........ but I don’t make the rules ;)

How about an award for:

WORST PLAYER of the SEASON.

Nominees:   SAWYERS, LIVERMORE, HRK, AUSTIN, ZOHORE, GIBBS

What will that achieve?

Why not?
It gives us food for debate Alex in a similar way to Player of the Season.

I know we all comment on players who don't quite do the business, but having an official title 'Worst Player' is taking it too far. They are still Albion players.

Very easy solution to this. Start a new thread of that title so as not to detract from this one. If people wish to respond they will without this thread becoming side tracked.

Likewise if the Mods choose to delete it as inappropriate all of the posts can be deleted in one go to save them the hassle of editing this one. Easy peasy.

Very diplomatic response Dan, & one which I fully support.

My post was rather tongue in cheek Dan but if a new thread was started on that subject it would be somewhat totalitarian if it was removed by the Mods in terms of censoring member’s posts as long as those posts did not break the forum rules and were legal.

And such a topic would not be removed from the forum providing the posts are within the rules. If members want to discuss our worst player of the season or the ones whose flattered to deceive the most then they’re welcome to start a new thread.

Dan is entirely right - this is not the thread for it.

Townsend has started from a very low bar, isn't Gibbs, tries hard (if you gloss over him getting us knocked out of the League Cup through sheer cowardice), isn't paid very much and shows very occasional glimpses of quality.

You can see why a fan base that hounded Peter Odemwingie as opposed to welcoming him back with open arms likes him...
Sometimes you write what I am thinking....it seems that Townsend gets votes because he hasn’t been quite as bad as some thought .
If youre going to get told off, get told off for doing something not for doing nothing..

1st Johnstone - much improved , some top draw saves overall . 6 yard thing still an issue.
2. Pereira - looks fitter and stronger under Allardyce , now looks like he belongs at this level which sadly he will just please not Wolves or Villa .
3. Townsend - Written off again but now looks comfortable at this level , his attitude to improving is top class . Might have the odd poor game but bounces back.
Nods to Bartley another who has improved overall and O'Shea making a big jump from 20 odd games at full back in the 2nd tier to Premier CB and a regular for Ireland .
Not all bad but not a vintage season.

I like that assessment!

I would choose Pereira too, for his magic moments and content assists/goals.

Sam Johnson for me with Pereira a close second, my reason being that Matheus was frequently played out of position by both Bilic and Allardyce. Inexplicably dropped at one stage, so keeper for me who's saves have kept us in games and saved us points.

I voted for SJ, but I would give a honourable mention to Conor Gallagher. Many seem to be labelling him " headless chicken" "diver" "falls over" etc. What Conor does is give 100% in every game, and I would remind posters on here that in the first half of the season shamefully several of our players did not. In some games he was the sole force of energy in our midfield. Not player of the season, but he deserves better than some of the crass comments on here. For a kid trying to make his way in the Premier league he does not owe us anything.
