The only problem I saw with the Germans last night is if Gomez got his backside into gear and showed some workrate the Germans would have something to target. He has to be one of the laziest players at that level of football.
There's an ongoing debate in Germany around Gomez with the question of how good he really is.
Some say he's just not good enough and others say he's just rubbish. Then there's a third group saying he's just sh*t. But is he really that bad?
I don't really think so. See, he's a representative of a new football school called donkeyrism. It's true he's lacking technical skills to control the ball. He can not dribble well and his passing is far from being perfect. He's a pure goalscorer waiting in the box for the right moment. He's got a phenomenal goal scoring record for both Bayern and country. He needs players around him (especially on the wide positions) who can beat the opponent on 1 vs. 1 and serve him. He tends to work very hard in the beginning of a match and then suddenly stops doing so. Against Real in the CL he really worked his behind off and tracked back very well to defend over the two legs. As you said it you can see both the hard working Gomez and the lazy one.
Against Italy Löw got it all wrong with Podolski and Kroos on the flanks. Neither of them is comfortable on the wide position and that's why Gomez didn't get the ball very often. In fact Kroos didn't hold his position and went for the center with no one being on the right hand side. If that was Löw's plan then he really messed it up. It think it goes without saying that Gomez, Podolski and Kroos together don't really fit into a team . Big mistake.
As for Gomez again, if he scores he's done his job (and he almost always scores) but if he doesn't he's easily the worst player on the pitch. Sometimes you never see him the whole 90 min. and wonder if he's even there. He doesn't do anything to take part in the game. And that's why he's such a risk and I think it's legit to raise the question whether or not you need a player like him. I don't think you do in modern football. imo he's a dying breed.
But back to topic, I hope Italy will win the whole thing. My money is on Spain though. They will bore the hell out of the Italians and the spectators and score eventually. I'd rather ram a pen in my knee than enjoy watching the Spanish tiki taka.
P.S. I don't hate people from Tuvalu (just wanted to make that clear). I don't find it logic to dislike people only based on nationality. One can probably find the same type of idiot all over the world. To Turkish Baggie: don't make the mistake to project your picture from my grandfather's generation onto this generation of Germans. It's just not fair.
