It's odd to see Arshavin destroy a team like he did tonight, which really confirms that he is talented...when he wants to be. It's a shame he's been so lazy at Arsenal, he could have been amazing.

I think Russia will obviously win their group but they just seem too inconsistent to pose a major threat. I.e. Cut off Arshavin/he has a poor game then they'll struggle. Nonetheless, they played some great football!

The Russians looked very good, they should stroll that group. I do believe they will be a threat to the big teams at the tournament. Even if they finish top it does appear they would have that oppurtunity to show how capable they are against the top teams where its looking like a possible rematch vs Holland or the Germans where both games would be pretty tasty.

The referees performance in the opening game really concerns me for not only the England games but the whole tournament.

Back on to Group A, i expect the Czech's to also qualify from that group with both Poland and Greece fluffling their chances in the dominant halves of the game they had. I feel one team needed to win that game to stand a chance of qualifying.

Who knows though, the Czech's may feel very dented from the battering they got.

Those two surely have to be the two worst teams in the tournament.

Ugly? yes. Not worst. Ugly football wins you tournaments.
Think that Roy will have a similar style and am hoping it frustrates the French and a single goal decides it.

I agree. Here's hoping that the home crowd can inspire the Polish to up their game and live with the ever impressive Russians.

I'm going for 3-0 though. The Russian set up is one of the most dangerous in the competition I believe. Kerzhakov and Arshavin are the obvious threats with Kervhakov bullying the Czech defence and was extremely unlucky not to score himself. Arshavin's performance speaks for itself, excellent player in the international team, the side suits him perfectly. The like of Dzagoev and Shirokov proved they have other qualities too. The players in-front of Akinfeev or Malafeev are very strong and do their jobs efficiently. Ignascevich, Zhirkov and Anyukov are excellent examples of this. I just can't see Poland having enough but with Lewandowski you never know. It will also be interesting to see how the Polish number 2 plays with his first start now Wojciech Szczesny suspended.

Interesting to see what UEFA do about this. I expect it'll be small fines all round but it really is a case of imagine if it was England fans involved in this.

This analyst on ITV is awful - boring an bland descriptions of exactly what's happening rather than some tactical analysis.

What can you expect nowadays though..

Where does the hatred between Russia and Poland stem from?

Russia as part of the soviet union owned poland, poland was the battle ground for german and soviet armies during WWII.

It predates that. The Polish stormed and conquered Moscow in the Polish Muscovy Wars. Think that was mid 17th century. Since then, the Polish people have always been subject/threat of/part of the Russian Empire till its break up in 1917. Was reincorporated following the 1939 invasion of Poland and Poland becoming a satalite state of the USSR till 1980.

Glad I have a History degree now!

Self foot shooting by us Greeks again!!!!! Shattered, big comback after the half, dodgy offside to boot. Were totally outnumbered what felt like 20:1 in the stands. Lot of respect for the Czech fans, extreme passion. Have to beat the Ruskies now to stand any chance. Off to lament playing my bouzouki.
