Penalty shoot out alternative
« on: February 23, 2021, 11:31:59 AM »
I know there's a few stato's and historians on here so, can anyone remember an alternative penalty shoot out being used in  European club comp in recent years?

I remember a game being decided by a one where the attacker picked the ball up on the halfway line and took on the keeper one on one. I'm convinced that Maresca was involved but am starting to think it was a dream as I can't find anything relating to it

Can anyone help an old man out. Either way!  :-[

They recently used an ABBA system for penalties, which got binned pretty quickly.

You might be thinking of the penalties the old American league used:

I'm positive it was Europe mate, probably a friendly / pre-season tournament. It really is driving me mad now so, if you, or anyone, can help, I'll be your best mate!

It came to mind following Ajayi's sending off and me remembering how difficult it is to run from the half way line and score a one on one, even when just the keeper to beat.

Stumbled upon this on a Liverpool forum which may give you a few pointers. If you are truly going mad, there are certainly a few others in the same boat  :)

It's how penalty shots are taken in Ice Hockey. Was definitely trialled in football a couple of times.

Last used in MLS relaunch from 1995 to 1999.

I'm at least convinced it happened now!
The timeline of the attached makes it pre 2012 and if Liverpool AND Maresca were involved then there's at least a chance we can narrow it down!
Thanks for the help mate, although I'm not sure you haven't made it worse  ;) :'(

Anglo-Italian cup, 1970, we beat Roma 4-0, I think 1 was a pen as described.
Lovin the championship, just lovin it !
