Play like we did last we get smashed.

We will see how good slavens man management skills are hopefully we see a bounce and reaction from the team.

As Gibbs isn't fit and ferguson has failed off coupled with how Townsend played I would give him a game. I also would be tempted to start big ken.
O Albion we love you

Townsend put a great cross in for the goal but let's not get carried away, he's poor defensively. I was sitting adjacent to our 18 yard box and he got skinned twice in the short time he was on.
As for Big Ken, how bad must he be if Austin and Kanu are keeping him on the bench! I don't think we could make a good un if we rolled all three into one, which is very worrying. Still, we scored 2 again last night, without the strikers contributing, so thankful there are goals from midfield.
Charlton will be a different test though, they are decent coming forward but, hopefully, that will give us more space for the likes of Perreira and Diangana.
Another draw for me.

On reflection I think I'd go with just a couple of changes. Now is the ideal time to bring Hegazi back into the team at the expense of Bartley. Phillips hopefully will return. If not I'd go with Robson-Kanu on the right and if Big Ken is still injured I'd be bringing young Jamie Soule onto the bench as the other central striking option if Robson-Kanu starts:

                                   Johnstone

Furlong           Ajayi                         Hegazi               Ferguson

                     Livermore                   Sawyers

Phillips / Robson-Kanu    Pereira                                Diangana

                                    Austin

Subs: Bond, Townsend, Bartley, Krovinovic, Brunt, Edwards, Robson-Kanu / Soule.

Johnstone

Furlong   Ajayi   Hegazi   Ferguson

Livermore   Sawyers

Phillips   Pereira   Diangana

Austin

Now is the time to bring Hegazi back in. Bartley hasn't particularly had any major ricks in the past few games, but I believe we will look a lot more assured as a defensive unit with Hegazi, a true leader and beast of a man, in there. We are shipping goals for fun at home, something has to change.

Ferguson was awful last night, but he will learn from it and should remain in the side until Gibbs is fit. Hopefully Phillips returns, if he doesn't I would be inclined to play Krov and use both he and Pereira central, linking up, placing the onus on Furlong to get down the wing and produce better balls in than what he served up last night. Edwards doesn't justify selection currently and needs to sort himself out.

If fit, I think Phillips for Edwards will be the only change. On form Phillips is still a big threat in this league and Edwards last night was the worst of a bad bunch.

I would keep Nathan Ferguson in. His performance wasn't as bad as some are making out. He got beat by pace and they scored, it happens. It isn't like he has been getting beat regularly this season. I'd consider giving him a rest for Gibbs, but not for Townsend.

Upfront we should stick with Austin too. I don't think he has been that bad either.  I would ask him to drop deep a little less though, and we need to play to his strengths. Get crosses in and balls to his feet in and around the box. Not ask him to win a 20 yard race, or hold a run with the ball while holding a player off for 20 yards. The one half chance he had on the turn last night was not an easy chance.

A fit Zohore would be decent if he had the mentality required, but I don't think he does.

I also think Hegazi makes us harder to play against because he is better on the ball than Bartley. You can't wait for Bartley to have it and stand off closing off the passing lanes with Hegazi as he is more likely to find the pass. This in turn will hopefully help us concede less.

In terms of team selection, it depends what Charlton are likely to do. Will they press up against us and squeeze the space in midfield initially how Barnsley started or will they sit in deep from the off. If they sit deep, we will probably want a left footer at left back to provide natural width and may want Krovinovic in alongside Sawyers. If they try to squeeze the space in midfield then I think Phillips or an option to run in behind is a must so that we can stretch them and force them deeper, giving us more room to play. If Phillips is unavailable to provide this option, starting Robson-Kanu on the right is probably the closest thing in terms of the profile of player and ability to run in behind and come central.

Johnstone

Furlong
Ajayi
Hegazi
Townsend

Sawyers
Livermore

Phillips (or Krovinovic)
Perreira
Diangana

Austin

Subs: Bond, Bartley, Ferguson, Brunt, Krovinovic (or Edwards), Robson-Kanu, Zohore (if fit)

Ferguson has had a great run, but we saw the attacking benefit of having an actual left-back last night. Even if he isn't great defensively, Townsend needs to play.

Like most of us I would welcome the return of Hegazi even though I feel Bartley has done well recently. I disagree about sitting Krovinovic alongside Sawyers though. We are already lacking physicality from midfield and Livermore, who I also think is playing well, gives that physicality. I certainly hope Phillips is back for the weekend.

Disagree on Ferguson for Townsend as I’ve already mentioned but to elaborate...

We have more of an issue at the back this season than we do going forward. Yes last night Townsend helped, but on balance moving forward, I wouldn’t weaken a defence by the extent Townsend would to benefit an attack which has been doing ok.

It wouldn't want it to be a go-to strategy but for teams that we know are going to sit deep, I think it is a viable option. Perhaps it is too risky from the start - it would also lose us something defending set-pieces also.
