No doubt Tony "Bomber" Brown, legend

Derek Kevan
Unstoppable.... something like 180 goals in 280 appearances and all in the top league. He scored in World Cup Finals for England.
Thunderous shot and dynamite in the air. To see Derek Kevan rise to meet a corner kick, parting the defenders like corn in the wind, was unforgettable.

I'd like to add Laurie Cunningham the best footballer I've seen in an Albion shirt

The most skilful without a shadow of a doubt was Laurie Cunningham. If he had been playing today with the protection players get nowadays he would have been on Messi's level.

No he wouldn't, that's going a bit far.

Loved Bomber, The King, Cantello, Cunningham et al, but the best player by far was Robson.

My Dad would have said Ronnie Allen or Ray Barlow. In my time the most iconic was Astle but the best would be any one of Bomber, Cunningham or Robson (though the betrayal left a sour taste)

It's always difficult to compare players from different eras as there are so many variables to take into consideration.

However, Laurie Cunningham along with George Best were the best footballers I've ever seen play in real life and they were the Lionel Messi of their day, no I'll rephrase that, Lionel Messi is today's Laurie Cunningham /George Best

Beautifully put.

I feel lucky to have seen so many wonderful English players at our club. Like others I was profoundly disappointed in Robson, and for me he tarnished his reputation when he moved.

My father spoke highly of Ray Barlow, I have seen Bomber, the King, Cyrille, Staham and others in their pomp, but for me, Laurie Cunningham all the way.

He was simply genius.

My favourite player was Derek Statham, the bloke should've got a wardrobe full of England caps instead of the handful that he did get!
Most exciting player was Laurie Cunningham, incredibly gifted player.
Bryan Robson would probably get this for being the most complete player!

It is difficult to compare players from different eras but you have to be looking through naive Albion coloured glasses to compare Cunningham with Messi.

Lets look at facts.

Messi club goals record:

2008 - 2009   38
2009 - 2010   47
2010 - 2011   53
2011 - 2012   73
2012 - 2013   60
2013 - 2014   41
2014 - 2015   43 - so far

Cunningham (League)

1976 - 1977   6
1977 - 1978   6
1978 - 1979   9
1979 - 1980   8
1980 - 1981   5

Messi total appearances to date : 496, Goals 408
Cunningham total appearances: 348, Goals 67

Now, I know goals aren't everything and the game has changed now and all that but Cunningham was never even Albion's top scorer in a season and he was the teams "flair player". Messi has scored more goals in one season than Cunningham scored in his entire career.

I won't even mention honours or international football.

Yes, Cunningham was a very good player but he was levels below Messi. In fact you ask any Real Madrid fan who was old enough to see Cunningham play and ask them who they'd pick, Laurie or Ronaldo (either Ronaldo's) and there will not be one who'd pick Laurie.

Case closed.

There are lies and there are dammed lies and then there are statistics.

As I said there are so many variables that comparing is virtually impossible.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Case opened and now closed  :D

Can't disagree with all the other posters: Barlow, Allen, Kevan, Cunningham, Regis, Brown, Statham - all greats. But just an honourable mention too for Clive Clark.

Re-opened, it's all about opinions of course, and you can cite all the statistics you like, but in my opinion, if Cunningham had the same pitches, same protection, and the same opportunities as Messi, he would have been at the same level. I haven't seen Messi do anything Laurie wasn't capable of
