Albion are lining up in a 4-5-1 formation - with Brunt, Morrison and Livermore in the middle of the park, Rodriguez out left, Phillips wide right and Robson-Kanu leading the attack. Morrison is getting forward to support HRK at every opportunity.

We desperately need something in the middle of the park and Rodriguez more central. Friendly or not I hope this is not what is coming our way this season.

Brunt is a wide player, Rodriguez more a central player, square pegs in round holes don't work

I would be more worried about the defending lads, we have 2 of the best headers of a ball in dawson and bartley in the division, bloke gets a free header for 2-0

Might only be a friendly but a lot of our players look awful. Brunt looks completely washed-up. Can't get up and down the pitch to keep up with play. Gibbs, still can't defend the back post to save his life. A bit concerning. As I type we somehow don't make it 2-1. Great chance after error by Barnsley GK. BTW you can watch the whole game for free on the Barnsley website.

Paul Suart text on game

30mins
“Robson-Kanu, through on goal, has his effort saved.

Rodriguez and Morrison unable to convert the rebounds.

Now it’s Phillips testing Walton in goal.

Pretty good game to be fair.

Not one for defences, mind.”

2-1 a the break, half-time ratings:

Keeper - 2 (at fault for first goal and poor kicking, looks like a child)
Nyom - 6 (decent)
Dawson - 6 (getting stuck in)
Bartley - 6 (solid enough)
Gibbs - 2 (a liability with and without the ball, shocking)
Brunt - 3 (extremely poor, passenger lost in the middle)
Livermore - 4 (disturbing how bad his passing has been)
Phillips - 5 (not in the game much, working hard)
J-Rod - 5 (out of position, looks off the pace)
Morrison - 6 (only midfielder with a bit of nous)
Kanu - 6 (working hard, no support, got a goal and linked okay)

Didn't play too badly from about 20 minutes in. Livermore is terrible and missed an open goal. HRK a handful. Brunt pulling the strings and Mozza looking lively. Rodriguez struggling wide left as he did throughout last season. Would expect to push on and win the game in the 2nd half.

I'm not so sure about that. It's competitive but we've looked a bit toothless and disjointed for most of that half. Hardly created anything to warrant scoring three.  GK gifted us a tap-in and then pulled off a wonder save for rectify his own error, looked like we might scramble one in from a corner and then scored from a free kick but not from open play looked particularly fluid. Granted just a friendly. 2-1 is about right at HT.

Not sure who's more biased ?

You in favour of Brunt or baggie82 against Gibbs

Brunt out wide, Rodriguez behind Robson-Kanu, no square pegs, sorted.

Same old square pegs!!

Bond looked awful, Nyom not really interested, Bartley looks good, Dawson we must keep him, Gibbs thinks he is better than champ, Livermore looks awful being played further back AGAIN, Brunt looks tired but still great delivery, Mozza is not even a pub player and still nowhere near fit, JRod is a STRIKER, Phillips not looking interested but has talent, Robson Kanu is not actually a footballer.

Apart from that and the poor style of play I am really looking forward to the new season.

2 all?

Defensive balls up by them Morrison lashes home. Phillips just murdered them down the wing, cross from hrk own goal. All Rosie again

I know it's a friendly but big dave tactics in this really worry me for the season. Brunt can't be playing cm and Rodriquez shouldn't be wide left. I don't want to be arrogant but surely our days of packing 5 in midfield away from home have to be numbered

Strange game. Equalised as soon as we kicked off and then comical own goal puts us 3-2 infront. Barnsley striker getting a bit heated with HRK. Predicting more goals.

He's been 6.5 out of 10 for me, better than anything else we've got at left back, he's not been shocking but not outstanding either. I do think you have been way over critical of him.

This Barnes looks the business. First touch is always forward and he always wants the ball. Type of player to make things happen.

With regards to cranie I can only speculate we are genuinely looking to sign him.

No Barry in the squad today is he injured or is somebody taking him off our hands?
No Burke either which is quite strange

Two good saves from Bond, much better performance from him second half. Barnsley pressing now with Livermore & Brunt not closing down on the edge of the box, shots coming in from 20 yards dangerous. Rondon on, yet to touch the ball.

Barry and Burke, along with Johnstone apparently played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Brentford I think I read somewhere.

Brunt off for Harper, surprised he hasn't been on sooner. Brunt looks like a footballing OAP, albeit still got a decent left foot from free kicks.

Cranie has replaced Bartley.

Albion nearly found a fourth - and Barnsley a third.

Rodriguez plays the ball just behind Robson-Kanu and Phillips can’t quite get on the end of it.

At the other end - and urged to shoot - Potts draws a quite brilliant, sprawling save from Bond.

What a match.

Rondon, ten touches so far, managed to give the ball away six times. Trotting around in a long shelved shirt. Barnsley break from our corner in the last minute, somehow look like Barcelona, completely tear us apart but fire it over from inside the box, would have been a great goal for them. FT 2-3. Our GK looked solid second half, Hegazi composed. Our midfield also had more threat breaking on them. Decent work out overall.

FT 2-3

Wow.

West Brom emerge victorious, but it would have been very different had Moore finished a sweeping move from the home side in te final game.

Excellent game and another win for Darren Moore.

Lots to please him on this performance.

Livermore was exceptional and Robson-Kanu a nuisance.

Was a good workout. Thought we got plenty out of it. Rodriguez and Livermore the worst of the bunch though JRod was out of position. Can't think of an excuse for Livermore who is just awful. Morrison looked a class above as did Brunt, Phillips, Hegazi and Dawson. Keeper recovered after an awful start and Barnes showed promise.

Pleased with that. Field in for Jake. Johnstone in goal. Rondon up front and Burke/Barnes for Rodriguez and I think that's comfortable automatic promotion.

I think that is a lot closer to what i saw than Baggie79's post! I think Rodriguez looked better when played through the middle.

I find it odd that there was a game at Brentford that Barry, Burke, Johnstone and Leko played in yet Kyle Edwards got 1 minute here...hmmm. Also Kane Wilson allegedly played in both games!

Livermore was a lot better second half, passing improved immeasurably. One great switch to Phillips and worked hard. Decent work out for the team.

Judging by the comments it seems the game looked a lot better on a stream than in reality!

1st 20 mins we were shocking. Nyom was dreadful kept losing his man, backwards and sideways passing all the time. For the first goal Bond is pointing at their tiny number 11 and asking Nyom to mark him but Nyom just stared at him like he had no clue what he was talking about. 2nd goal was just as bad. Were we trying to zonal mark rather than man mark? Bartley looked very shaky first half, got better in the 2nd but have to say I'd rather we start with Dawson & Hegazi (if they are both still here come 4th August). Not really sure why Dawson was taken off at half time. I was certain Nyom would go off.

For the first 20-25 mins Barnsley played some nice stuff, lots of pass and movement at pace. Their number 11 in particular looked decent and certainly put himself about. The number 19 was quite moody and got a bit narky as the game wore on.

Good to see Morrison get a run out and along with Brunt, Dawson and Phillips was probably the only other one looking really up for it in the first half.

Rodriguez was out of position, he seemed to struggle at times and in the second half he should have been selfish and had a shot instead of trying to tee up Barnes. Overall though I thought Rodriguez stuck to his role and was decent. Gibbs was also steady, made a couple of errors but so did everyone else.

Thought Barnes looked lively when he came on. Rondon looked uninterested and I don't remember him really getting involved, he just sort of wandered about.

What a wide range of views!!!

Livermore was either woeful or wonderful!

Brunt either oap and past it or cruising and controlled!

Etc etc
Whenever we are playing badly, just remember -
Paul Chrichton,Neil Parsley, Andy Mcdermott, Scott Darton, Winston White,Mark Angel, Fabian DeFreitas, Paul Williams......now, do you feel better?

cracks you up doesn't it!
Its amazing how entrenched peoples opinions become as well (I include myself before someone bites), It would do us all good to consider this before we criticise management I think, as they are human as well and will have their own prejudices / opinions / relationships to players.
Lovin the championship, just lovin it !
