Norwich were the luckiest side ever last year, they will not survive this season. If Pukki  gets 8 I’ll 8 my hat.

We will finish above Milwall so should beat them but they are a well drilled outfit so have to be on our game.
Slaven was critical of our slow start so that, coupled with an electric atmosphere should see us fly out the blocks. An early goal for us and I think we win comfortably.
3-0 Phillips, Krovinovic, Bartley.

From what im hearing about this lad im really excited to see what he brings to the team.

WHU fans think he should still be with them
He's not here to warm the bench mate, he'll want to play, WH will want him to play and Bilic obviously thinks he's good enough.
Look over your shoulder Matty Phillips.

Hope we don't end up in a Barnes situation again with his recall clause in the loan deal.
I really like the look of this kid and think he certainly has the potential to replicate what Barnes did last year and, if he does, there is every chance they will have him back. Difference is we have better cover this time.

The fact that so many people still have Livermore starting is a real concern.
For me a holding mid has to have 3 main qualities:

Be able to tackle
Receive and hold the ball
Pick a pass

Livermore is 0/3, for me,  so fully understand the return of Barry. Will hopefully be good for Sawyers also.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Best XI
« on: August 09, 2019, 08:57:21 AM »
After, what looks like a fantastic window, I wonder what everyone's best XI would be, assuming everyone fit. I've tried a few times and it's a real struggle! Nice problem to have though.
Here's mine:

                       Bond
        Ferguson Hegazi Ajayi Gibbs
Diangana Phillips Sawyers Krovinovic Perreira
                        Austin

Subs:
Johnstone O'Shea, Harper, Zohore , Furlong, Edwards, Brunt

Do away with two holding players and have Sawyers pulling the strings. Maybe getting a bit carried away with the wealth of attacking talent we now have but that front 5 could be devastating.  :)

Why would Kanu know the ins and outs of our transfers, and more to the point why would he tell a random fan?
And what was Charlie Austin singing? Allez, Allez?

Townsend kanu Anelka lambert sturridge

No interest in coming here

Way past their best

Not fit

Cynically looking to squeeze one last pay day out

Zero on sell value

how many times do we have to make this mistake for us to learn not to repeat it

Im so disappointed
Kanu was 28 (allegedly) and was ace

Townsend - 36
Anelka - 34
Lambert - 33

Therefore Sturridge is the only genuine comparison to Austin in terms of age, but that was in the Prem, so Rodriguez and Gayle are a more like for like.

He would probably be a back-up. Behind Phillips, Edwards and the guy from Sporting.
No way West Ham would let him come if that was the case. He's here to play and I think he will, he is a very good prospect, so all of the above will have to be on their toes to keep him out.

Horrible, arrogant little nerk, already got more out of the game than he deserves. Hope he never gets paid for kicking a ball ever again and ends up a bald, bloated, drunk lamenting what could have been.

Wasn't too keen on Austin but, with the amount of wingers we are bringing in, he could get an absolute hat full in this league (I think I could get 10 ). Would also replace Rodriguez as penalty taker so that would certainly be in safe hands.
QPR mate says we win the league if we get him, rates him as a beast from his time there.
If fit, this could be the 20 goal striker we need, let's not be too quick to write him off.

If the cash juggernaut that is Sky cannot stop us watching their games for free, I don't see how these guys stand a chance of protecting their "exclusives". Patience is a virtue so, I for one, will be happy to wait a day or two and read it for free.
As for the Academy changes, I think something needs to be done to ground the kids. They grow up too fast and "make it" before they've kicked a ball at a decent level.
It used to be that kids were fans first, standing on the terraces with dad and dreaming of pulling on the shirt. These days they are "footballers" at the age of 9 and miss out on the passion and emotion you get from the stands. Football becomes a job rather than a real "in yeah blood" passion.
Not sure segregation is the answer to any problem though and does seem a bit archaic, no wonder Pulis liked it!

His touch and forward runs were horrendous Saturday imo. Most of the time he had the ball he seemed to lose it ... May work better in a 2?
Definitely needs someone with him, not a loan striker target man, despite his size. He's better going at defenders than with his back to goal, could work well with Gayle (or someone similar)

Due to the mockery of a system, which allows bigger clubs to pretty much cherry pick our academy prospects, for next to nothing, it may be that we are reducing our funding of it and that's triggered the exodus..
With most academy players not making it at all, the best being poached and a percentage going to lower leagues, the amount that will actually play for us, or make a profit on, is probably very low.
Would be a crying shame if true but sort of understandable, especially if you are run by an accountant.

According to the Brummie Mail Villa haven't even been in touch about him.

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/matt-phillips-brom-villa-transfer-16668548
I can't see it to be honest, they have too many similar players.
As for Phillips, I'm easy on either way. As has been said many times, on his day he is a wonderful talent, trouble is, these days are few and far between and usually interspersed with injuries and subsequent periods of poor form.
Don't get me wrong, if we could keep him fit and at the top of his game, I would say sign him up to a long term deal but that would be just as risky as letting him go.
Difficult one for the DoF but, I think, if a genuine offer comes in, he will be sold.

That way of creating goalchances will never dissapear, Pulis or not.
He also has a respectable goalscoring record from midfield, which is badly needed.
I don't understand this mentality of wanting to get rid of our best players, and then  sweating later  if we are going to get in better replacements before the window closes.
Remember getting dumped as a kid and saying "Go then, I'm not bothered anyway, ya tits am too small", then crying yourself to sleep?
Well, it's  a bit like that.

Barry was out at San Carlo in Birmingham last night with Livermore, Leko, Harper and Krovinovic. I know he is training with us and doesn't mean that he is signing but thought I would mention it. I feel that he will be signed on a one-year deal but that's just a hunch. For the record, I wouldn't be in favour of it although maybe it would open up a loan move for Field. Although as Standaman has said elsewhere, if Field isn't getting into out team now, would a loan this year change that for next year?
It may be a luxury we can ill afford, but with all the younger heads we have now, it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to have him around in some capacity.

They will stay up, but I don't think they will finish as high as some of their fans think.

Can see them finishing around 12th.

Be interesting to see if they don't start very well, will they stick with Smith.
If they are bottom by November he'll be gone. That will leave the money men scrambling round looking for a way to stay up. Cue the baseball capped, white pumps wearing phantom emerging from the shadows........"Ay up lads, I believe you require my services?" prompting much hand wringing and maniacal laughter. :o

73

If they were past it why have they just been purchased by Premier League teams? Rodriguez / Dawson.

I agree we need to build again but Dowling did warn this could be a two year project and the signings so far reflect that. They have promise, they MAY progress after we've worked with them.

If you think we're going to be this seasons Norwich I think you'll be disappointed. I hope you're right and I end up looking like an idiot, seriously, I do, but I very much doubt it ........ UNLESS we bring in two / three players of real quality before the end of the window.
It's a good point and yes, it is realistic, not necessarily negative. The good news is, i think we will see those 2 or 3 quality signings, bad news is they will likely be loans. That's life though these days and, if we can get loanees that perform like Gayle, Barnes, Abrahams, Wilson etc did last year, I won't be complaining.

Not slagging him off here, I like the signing, but I don't think Zohore can play the lone striker. As big as he is, he's no target man as he is not particularly good in the air. Will work much better with another striker alongside him so think we will see two up top. Believe Slaven has even said as much.
We will definitely see another, more potent, striker come in. Think HRK, but thinner, faster, better on the ball, doesn't fall over as much, gives a shoite and actually contributes with goals and we'll be onto something.

Great news and potentially a very good signing, have to agree with Stan though in the sense that I'm not sure what our midfield is going to look like. If we are to play 442, which seems Slaven's preference, I can't see Harper and Sawyers starting. Good news is, I can't see Sawyers and Brunt either so hopefully Brunty's CM days are over.
On paper though, we look more suited to a 5 man midfield IMO.
Excited but a little confused.
