West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Ahmed Hegazi
« on: Today at 02:04:44 PM »
Whilst it is fantastic news that he is back, I don't believe it's the be all and end all solution that some are hoping for. Yes he is a fantastic defender and will make a massive difference, I'm just not sure he's that vocal in terms of commanding those around him, which is what we need, given the lack of experience we have at present.
I would still like to see a better, more confident keeper in there as well.

This was my opinion 5-6 weeks ago and it remains so now.

Decent player, but it seems he is more suited to the Sawyers  role and I wouldn't drop Sawyers at this stage. You could replace Livermore but does that leave the defence exposed? Sawyers can't tackle so Krov would gave to show his defensive side if we do that.
If we had a solid back 5 I think we could get away with Krov in for Livermore but until Johnstone and Bartley are either dropped, or sort themselves out, it would be too risky.
Think everyone is pinning their hopes on Hegazi being the be the solution.

Not quite sure what us being top scorers (with a front three of Barnes, Gayle and Rodriguez so ultimately we should have been) has to do with my post? I was responding to us conceding for fun last season as we are this season. We have no Dawson and Hegazi in place this season as we had last season so my point is that we have to look at what is in front of SJ and at the minute we are playing with a young lad who is not a left back playing (very well as it happens) out of position, a new right back who is very attack minded....and Kyle Bartley who is....Kyle Bartley, so in my opinion blaming SJ for everything as people seem to be doing is out of order.
It was the dig at Moore that I was referencing and pointing out that we are pretty much exactly where we were last year., so it just doesn't stack up.
As for Johnstone, I don't see many blaming him for everything, as you put it, they are just pointing out that, a lot of the time, he is not very good, which he isn't.
For what it's worth I agree with your points regarding Hegazi and Bartley.

We didn't have a manager last season.

Hegazi will make a massive difference. Anyone but Bartley in there will make all the difference, SJ isn't the issue
This time last year we had 17 points and were top scorers in the division. We finished 4th which is exactly where we are now. Please stop the Moore bashing and move on.
In my opinion Bilic is a better manager but that's no reason to disrespect his predecessor.

We have to be looking at a win to gather momentum and keep pace with the early runners and riders.

However I just can't shake the memory of October 21st 2003, West Bromwich Albion 0 v 1 Wimbledon (Joel 'Jobi' McAnuff 79 min).

We dominated possession but lacked any real cutting edge and probably wouldn't have scored if we were still playing them now.

Just one of those nights but almost sixteen years later and that memory is still there.

Into 'em Albion and COYB  8) .
Same here, always quote that game when we go into a match as massive favourites! We're a pessimistic bunch at times but, no wonder, when games like that leave such an indelible mark!!
We can't afford a repeat though, this is a game we should win and need to win, to, as you say, build momentum and put us firmly in with the front runners. The league is starting to take shape now and we need to stake our place.

Whilst he's no world beater, he is too good to be an U23 coach, and that should have been recognised when he was offered the job. We probably thought it was too good an opportunity to turn up despite the risk of him being head-hunted.
Next bloke should be long term though, we need some consistency running the academy after all the recent upheaval.

Got 0-1 written all over it if we turn up expecting a walkover
Not impossible, especially if they get an early goal, which is not impossible!
They looked poor on Sunday though, can't see us not winning this.

The season before we bought him he kept 22 clean sheets. So I think there's definitely something in him needing a strong back line in front of him to help with his confidence, or just more simply to just reduce the amount of chances the opposition gets.

I hope that once Hegazi is back and fit we will start to look much more solid and cut out some of the errors. Hegazi could well be the leader the back line needs.
Hope so mate, we need the defence to become a solid unit. A good, cohesive, back 4 is better than 4 great, individual defenders.
If we can get that, and a striker in January, we will be nailed on top 6 for me.

When we revert back to Pulis Ball? The brilliance of Foster also coincided with are best back line in recent memory and also the most defensive managers in the entire country! Bilic is renown for leaky defences due to the way he sets up his team, to pin the blame on the goalkeeper for a trend of conceding a goal a game is a weak argument.
He is the only constant though. We struggled last season, with a different manager and a different back 4, yet same problem.
It would be wrong to blame him entirely but it would also be naive to not consider he is the weak link.
For me he's not commanding enough. A good keeper not only instils confidence in his back 4, he also puts the fear of god in them, to a certain extent anyway. Johnstone just seems disjointed from the rest of the defence; he doesn't organise them, doesn't bollok them and his positioning is questionable.
All of the back 5 have, individually, received plaudits at points this season but not yet as a group and I think this is because we lack a natural leader in there and this exposes Sam, as he is the last line of defence. We either need one of the centre halves to step up and take control or we need a more confident, vocal, experienced keeper.

Wolves will be ok but won't emulate last year.
Villa will survive once Smith is sacked and Pulis takes over.
Sheff Utd and Norwich will probably be bottom 4 along with Brighton and Newcastle.

I'm wondering if Slaven will be brave enough to go with Krovinovic in the deeper role:

                              Johnstone

Furlong          Ajayi               Bartley           Whoever (probably Ferguson)

                     Sawyers          Krovinovic

Phillips                    Pereira                         Dianagana

                              Austin.

Given that we are likely to have most of the ball against a team that are anything but free scoring and are likely to sit deep, it's a possibility.
That would be my team, apart from Whoever, he's ok going forward but dodgy at the back, so I'd go Ferguson.

Same side, hope we have a better start, can't keep giving away early goals and chasing games. Longer we stay in this the better chance we have of nicking a win.

Never realized they were such a bogey side, not won here since 67  :o
Don't think we'll shake that monkey today unfortunately, they look a strong side, especially going forward, think they will find a way past Johnstone and co.
Think we'll score though.

An interesting article about Odemwingie. Still one of my favourite players.

Fair play to him, shame this didn't come out years ago, it does seem like the club hung him out to dry a bit.
Will always be a legend for his hatrick against Wolves but could have been so much more.

                                           Livermore              Sawyers

                                                      Zohore

Subs: Al Habsi, Townsend, Ferguson, O'Shea, Krovinovic, Edwards, Austin.
This would be my pick. I'm no fan of Johnstone and hope Al Habsi has come in to genuinely compete for the shirt but for now it's Sam's to lose.

I hate to say it but i like giving it a listen, Charlie Austin is a guest on his latest one though i don't think it's uploaded just yet. I just find that he's a guy that speaks a lot more truth.
Sorry but the bloke's a total ass hat who shouts a lot but says nothing. Would rather stick wasps in my ears.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Jake Livermore

Sawyers passing has been pretty poor for the last few games. Livermore has been by far the better of the 2.
Apart from the opening game of the season Livermore has been good.
All about opinions mate, I think he's been poor apart from Blackburn. Sawyers has struggled at times but overall has been  by far the better player and, given a choice between the two, would be my pick every time.

I'm still not a fan and don't think he's been very good this season. Yes Blackburn was his best game for some time but still a long way to go before I'll be convinced. Sawyers definitely helps as he does a lot of the work Livermore can't such as tackling, passing and showing for the ball.

I don't understand why they are so upset the ref was 100% correct pickey Jack dived in the build-up to the goal. VAR confirmed he is cheating diver and the goal was correctly disallowed as he blew his whistle for the dive.
Reality hitting home now, they were a big club in the Championship but completely insignificant in the Prem, just part of the lower end sludge.
Refs protected Greasy last year because he was high profile, he won't get that this season.

Very good insight and proves that a lot of the conspiracy theories around Mel were certainly steeped in truth. Same with Pulis, was right at the time of appointment but should have gone sooner. Pardew was cack, no great revelation there.
Been a good servant has Brunty and whilst I never liked him as a captain, on the pitch, or a central midfielder, he has played his part in some very memorable victories. He also seems to genuinely have the club at heart, which is rare these days.

I get that people are a bit disillusioned, but there's not much that would beat seeing England win a major trophy, before I shuffle off this mortal coil, so I will be watching with hope in my heart.

Any win will do but wouldn’t be surprised with any result.
Hopefully Perreira will start and be the spark. Would love a clean sheet as well.

Perhaps the club do not want to highlight the lack of success at the highest level?
Only 24 teams have ever won it so still an achievement.
Should have done something, maybe play in hob nail boots or make the players grow little moustaches?
