That price for Mings is ridiculous, no way would I have paid that.

Villa spent a lot of money on not really improving anything from last season at the moment.

I guess if you've got it you can spend it but to me it's not a good way to run a club.

I like Jay, but also really like the look of that diedhou, almost swung the game at the Albion in their favour when he came on, proper handful.

Decent player and would fit ideally into a Bilic team. He's not a prolific goalscorer but would get us possibly as many goals as J Rod scored minus the penalties.

As far as Jay is concerned, if he does complete his move to Burnley he will go with fans' blessings I would think. Top professional, top bloke, played week in, week out, always gave his all. Good luck to him.

I'd be a little disappointed to see J Rod go as he's an experienced head that will contribute in the way of goals. That said if Bilic is going to play 4-3-3 next season I'm not entirely certain where J Rod would fit in. Bilic likes to play with a target man and I'm not sure J Rod has the pace to play the wider role.

It's not the end of the world for me as long as the replacements are the correct ones.

I would like us to get O'Shea on a long term deal then get him out on loan in league one.

Jon leko needs a season playing games so he should also be out in league 1 or 2.

I think Oliver Burke and Edwards will be in and around the first team. We could probably get one of the 2 out on loan for half a season too depending on additions.

If Sam field isn't starting weekly he needs a season long loan so he doesn't regress.

I'd like to see O'Shea used as third or forth choice centre back here next season, (the Adarabioyo role last season if you like).

I'm hoping Slaven does trust our youngsters more next season. I think last season the club very much saw it as one crack at going straight back up so put more of an emphasis on going with experience whereas now they are talking in terms of changing our philosophy and getting promotion within two years (obviously go up this season if we can). This is an ideal time to integrate the youngsters, in the knowledge that we will be financially living more within our means and an extra season in the Championship will make no real difference to us in that regard.

I'd like to see more of Harper and Field in the middle of the park and Edwards and Burke used more amongst the front three. These players need to be given priority over the likes of Livermore and Robson-Kanu in particular.

I believe the club need to make a decision on the likes of Leko, Wilson, Fitzwater. Do they loan them out again or do they look to release them? I don't see any of them making the grade. Just my opinion, of course.

Brunt is better than Field. End of story really...

Not really, they are different types of players.

Unlike some I do still think Brunty has a role to play next season but I'd like to see him used primarily off the bench. If we need a goal with 20-25 minutes to go that's when I'd like to see Brunty introduced when teams are tiring a little bit and he can get time on the ball to deliver quality with that left foot of his. He is versatile in that you can play him wide right, wide left or more centrally against a team parking the bus, his lack of mobility isn't as much of an issue in such circumstances.

In terms of starting games, Bilic has already intimated that he wants to play a higher tempo, more energetic style (as indeed has Dowling) and that won't ideally suit Brunt.

Good news. There's still this question of what type of player Harper is and what's he going to be ? He could potentially play in the same position as Filip but from the footage they are very different players.

Bearing in mind our need for legs and energy in midfield could we see

                 Harper                Field

with Harper generally more advanced than Field but with Field also able to get forward when the opportunity is there. Average age there about 21. Just a thought.

That is a much better midfield three than we've been used to (cue Jacko, Field is crap and Brunt must play histrionics  ;)).

Those three are youthful, should be capable of, and indeed suited by, playing a higher tempo than we're used to (which Bilic has hinted as ideal) and they compliment each other well. You have the defensive mind and left foot of Field, the athleticism and right foot of Harper and the mobility, attacking mind and two feet of Krovinovic.

That midfield three is capable in the Championship. There are a couple of issues though: a) It's a very inexperienced trio, b) we need obvious cover and c) because of it's youth it may be inconsistent.

For any one off game though if we lined up with that midfield three I'd be pretty happy.

46k is his flex down wage!??!

No, to be fair, it wouldn't be but the thing with the flex down wage is I'd expect it rises again in the event of promotion which would then (if we went up next season) leave us with a 30 year old on wages he has never justified. Livermore hasn't long signed a new contract I'd be amazed if there isn't a condition in that contract that bumps his wages up again if we're in the Premier League.

« on: July 06, 2019, 12:31:16 PM »
Personally I would hope Livermore goes and we replace him not Field, but I cannot see it.

Livermore is on a reported £46K per week. If that figure is within £10K correct and I'm pretty certain it is, I would be actively trying to entice offers for him.

Getting a distinctly average 29 year old on money like that out of the door is absolutely what we should be doing. I'd accept pretty much any offer for him just to get that wage off the books.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Louie Barry
« on: July 06, 2019, 09:50:11 AM »

16 year old England wonderkid Louie Barry has rejected his three-year contract offer and left the Baggies after being in the academy since the age of 6.

Barry first rose to prominence last year when he scored 10 goals in five games for England Under-15s at a tournament in Italy. He also won the golden boot in November at the Val-de-Marne tournament which England Under-16s won.

This is clearly a massive kick in the knackers and makes me wonder why we bother to even continue to have an academy. I guess it must turn a modest profit from players sold because we sure can't keep anyone of decent quality in our team.

Sam Field, Rekeem Harper, maybe Dara O'Shea this year, Morgan Rogers perhaps ......... this is why we have the academy.

The Louie Barry loss is disappointing but these things happen and Barry is at his age group one of the most promising talents in World football hence the interest from the likes of Barce, PSG etc.

He's only a baby though and still could go either way.

The academy is worth persevering with for sure, even if the odd cuckoo does fly the nest.

It's worth baring in mind the likes of Izzy Brown, Dhanda and the like haven't really gone on so I'd argue just how big a loss were they to us?

« on: July 06, 2019, 09:23:22 AM »
I'm not particularly happy about this in one way. Firstly I'm not sure exactly how good Harper is and I'm not certain how he fits into a Bilic team. Also following his twitter antics during the first leg of the play offs against Villa I don't want that sort of character at the club.

Here's the but:

BUT on the other hand it is a definite positive in the message it sends out to the academy prospects, particularly following the Louie Barry departure AND given that he's signed when he clearly had other options tells me his attitude is different at this present moment in time to what it was at the end of last season.

Given his age, I'm prepared to look over his past misdemeanour but for me Harper has to grow up, knuckle down and prove himself.  At least if we have to move him on down the line we will get decent money for him so from that point of view it's excellent business for the club.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Matty Phillips
« on: July 06, 2019, 09:12:38 AM »
Phillips is one of them I would sell at the right price but £2.2m isn't half of it.

Good player yes but every single season we lose him for half of it and I include the time when he returns from his injuries because he comes back and looks about 80%. Does he gives us enough for £40K per week? I don't think he does considering his goal return for an attacking players isn't particularly high.

If the price is right sell on the proviso we bring in the right replacement, but don't give him away.

I'm hopeful that Billic and Croatian staff will give him good support, but ultimately it will be down to him. You'd hope he is able to do a similar job to Barnes, but I'm really waiting to see how strong he is physically on the ball, because you get knocked about a bit in the Championship.

He can just do a Grealish and fall over every time someone gets within a yard of him.

Let's hope he's a success here because he's exactly the type of player we've been badly missing.

First one in. Good stuff.

I'd stay at Albion, no question at all.

It's not as if me and mine would ever starve on the wages Albion pay.

No way would I go anywhere else unless the club gave me no choice.

Very annoying but absolutely nothing the club could do.

Until the laws are changed this sort of thing will continue to happen.

I wonder if he is getting frustrated yet by the lack of signings?

Nope. At this point it's only fans frustrated partly because we're not privy to the goings on. Bilic is professional he knows we have over a month yet before the window closes, that's more than enough time.

Djokovic will win the men's. Women's, wide open.

The transfer situation is a little worrying and the thing that bothers me is the lack of players linked to us. Think I've only read of 2 players who are closely linked and even one of them has been delayed.

That I really don't see as an issue. Usually we learn what transfers are imminent when they are just that, imminent. Usually the links are completely without substance.

As a club Albion keep things close to their chests and journalists usually are way wide of the mark regarding our intentions.

The only one I've seen that has substance so far is Krovinovic and I'd expect that deal to go through.

I don't understand how anyone hasn't missed it. I'm finding it torture. There's not even a World Cup / Euro Championship to ease the blow. (Women's stuff doesn't count).

Really cannot wait for normality to resume. Yep, no doubt, I'll moan like hell from time to time, that's part of being an Albion fan but at least life will seem normal again.

I hate summer, it's crap!  :(

Always try to be optimistic!

He is in the last year of his contract, but I can't see anyone who will to pay a fee or take on the stupid wages we gave to the no-hoper!

League one club maybe. He'd have to take a wage cut though. We can but hope.

If I have one wish (well two) regarding outgoings in this transfer window it's Robson-Kanu and Livermore moving on. Neither are any good and they block the route of potential talent via the academy.

Who else is counting down the days?

What are everyone's predictions? Expectations?

Anyone else concerned with the apparent lack of transfer dealings? Or do we expect the club will get the right men in before 3rd August?

Is Bilic the right man for the Championship slog?

Which other teams are we worried about?

So many questions, but got to say I can't wait for the first game of the season! I wonder what we'll think when we look back on this thread in May?

I'm definitely counting the days and so far time is dragging, it seems like about six months ago since the play off games.

I expect us to finish inside the top six again. Others are expecting top two but I think that very much depends on the state of our squad when the transfer window closes and will also depend on what happens in the January window. During Bilic's unveiling press conference both Dowling and Bilic were keen to state two years as the promotion time span, I think it depends on the size of the re-build and whether or not we can get the required players in during this window. So far Morrison, Barry (?) and Dawson have gone while the loanees have gone back to their parent clubs, none of that surprising, so far no-one has come in but Nyom and Burke have returned from their loan spells together with a couple of youngsters.

The lack of incomings is slightly concerning to me. I realise there is plenty of time left yet in this window but it's always a concern and frustrating when there's nothing happening.

Is Bilic the right man? Well time will tell.

Main danger - It's the Championship, who knows? They are all potential dangers.

Can’t see anything in that article about Filipi Krovinovic signing for us, are you sure?

I couldn't either.

However Matt Wilson states on his twitter page that Krovinovic is expected to fly over some time this week and sign the deal which has apparently been agreed by the two clubs. Season long loan.

Surprise surprise, you don't rate a West Brom player...

He rates Brunt.  ;D

Dawson has been a good servant to us but I'm not really sorry to see him go he's the type of player we need to move on. As someone said earlier in this thread Dawson is a deep lying blocker he's not that great at doing anything else and was, for the most part, pretty average last season. He's a battler but he lacks quality.

I'd like to see Livermore shipped out next.
