2 matches not yet mentioned:

93/94 at home - remember Graham Fenton's blistering long range shot in a 2-1 victory?  I think part of the Hawthorns was being re-built at the time.

02/03 at home - we were 2 up at the break under Megson.  David Bellion came on for the 2nd half and tore us to pieces, was it Des Lyttle RB?  Anyway Tore Andre Flo and Super Kev were up front.  I think in that season Sunderland finished bottom with a then record 19 points total (later to be beaten by Super Mick with 15) lol  :P

I don't want to take the gloss off today but the performances in some matches have been top drawer - Newc (A), Wolves (A), Villa (A), Stoke (A).

Other times we don't look motivated especially at home.  I think we should be higher at this stage of the season.  No disrespect but Norwich City 8th FFS.

Yes we were magnificent.  Yes I'm over the moon now.

However, when the dust settles do people think we should be mid-table by now?

I think mental approach from the players has 100% to do with it.  The players need to stay motivated for all the games.  They clearly wanted to do it for the fans today and credit to them for that.

Fantastic.  My best result supporting the Baggies!  Was worried at HT after we didn't take our chances.  2nd half made up for it.

6 pts sounds a lot better doesn't it :P

Seriously we have to go to Wigan and Bolton also.  We should be looking to win at these grounds too.

Look we've got Chelsea & Man U back-to-back at start of March.

I can't believe the negativity and nervousness of the fans.  Let's be more demanding of the team and manager otherwise we'll never move forward.

I'm all for patience and realism but accepting a point now is daft.

Looking at the games this week, it's been fairly good for us (unlike last). QPR and Bolton, the two nearest us both lost. Whilst this makes it all tighter and gives the others hope - I also think it's a good thing for us. A point would keep us ticking over, and would mean 1 less games whilst keeping the Wolves at bay.

However, it would also pile immense pressure on the Sunderland game, who are currently doing very well. I think I'd take a point right now.

Are you completely bonkers?  If we don't target wins against Wolves what matches do we target?  Talk about running scared.  No offence - but I'm pleased you're not the manager!

Wolves will charge at us like headless chickens from kick off.  They will press high up the pitch, and spread the ball out to both flanks.  This is where they are extremely dangerous.  Fletcher has scored loads this season from simple tap-ins or headers inside the box.  They do not play much football, but have speed across all areas.  It will really be a case of "cup tie football" from them.  In May 2011 we were really not "up for it" and were bullied inside the opening 30 mins.

Their fans do not like a patient passing game.  "Glenda" Hoddle tried this and he was ruthlessly hounded out.

We need to stick to our strengths which is possession football AT PACE.  If we play the one-dimensional crab football we may well lose.  We need to strike early and hit them hard, resulting in the home crowd turning on them.

We do not want to concede the 1st goal as their fans will turn the place into a cauldron.  However Wolves can run out of steam after 70 mins due to the massive closing down and pressing game they so rely on.

If we sit back from the start it will be suicidal IMO.  They are there for the taking IF our players believe.

We need to win simple as.

If you go into sport playing for a draw you generally do lose.

If we don't target a limited, hustle-bustle team like Wolves for 3 pts then we should be in the championship.

Over to the players..........

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: The new improved defence
« on: February 05, 2012, 01:26:51 PM »
The defence has improved but at the expense of attacking play.  We won't concede 71 but won't score 53 this season.

I think the whole of our team looks slow.  I'm starting to doubt RH - he has had 2 windows to change personnel but there's been little movement either way.

The home fans have every right to criticize and a severe loss in season ticket sales come the summer could force JP to act.

I wonder if RH appreciates WBA are renowned through history for attacking football?

Albion Matchday Forum / Re: How do you feel about todays performance?
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:20:45 AM »
I'm feeling very low as well.

However I think its the players who are to blame.  What must have Reading's fans thought?  8th position in prem one season then relegated the next.  I just don't think our players are good enough and we don't look fit enough.  We must have the slowest team in the league.

I think Dorrans and Cox are passengers.  I want to see some fire and energy in that midfield!  I want to see Tchoyi, Andrews, Allen and Thorne given a chance.

No one complained after wed night.

Do you really want us to go down playing russian roulete football as it was under TM?

What if Wolves stay up in a bigger stadium?

West Bromwich Albion FC / What Is Our Best Team And Is RH Aware Of It?
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:41:56 PM »
From what I've seen over the course of 11/12, we don't have any "standout" players.  All seem much of a muchness in terms of ability.  And we have a massive squad, some players like Tchoyi can't be happy.

RH has got to be frustrated knowing that he'll be continually let down by inconsistency.

Look at the players generally left on the sidelines, are they any worse than the guys regularly picked?  Are Thorne, Allen, Andrews, Tchoyi any worse than a midfield that's totally overated IMO?  You could even play Jara-Reyes DM.

If I was Tchoyi I would be totally **** off not starting today after his efforts at Fulham.  I really feel as if RH could pick names from a hat and it wouldn't make much difference.

There's very few that are obviously weaker, Cox & Mattock being 2 examples.

« on: February 04, 2012, 08:23:06 PM »
I understand why we're no good at home because we haven't got the pace / quality to open teams up.  Conversely we're excellent away becasue we are so compact and well organised.

We deserve to be 15th becuase that is the overall standard of the players at our disposal.  The fans should not expect any better in terms of league position.

Whether RH goes defensive or offensive is irrelevant IMO.  Anyone unhappy should really direct most of the criticism in the board's direction for lack of spending.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: A long overdue rant
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:09:29 PM »
The players "played their way" in 10/11 and conceded 71 goals.

Now more often than not that would result in relegation.  RH knew this so proceeded to change it.  And I think he is correct in doing so.

If they don't like why don't they submit transfer requests instead of moaning?  Or are they just too comfortable at B71?

I agree we looked a lot more vibrant last season.  What's changed?

Well I do think our players are showing their age.  12 months can be a long time in football.  Take Gerrard & Lampard for example.  Both were marauding box-to-box midfielders with endless energy.  Now both look "over the hill".  Its to do with age IMO.

We have failed to replenish the midfield area with younger players.

I fear for us next week, Wolves do have more pace than us.  I hope we can raise ourselves.

Sinclair & Dyer are like Usain Bolt compared to our midfield.  Morrison, Brunt, Scharner, Dorrans are all slow and haven't the pace to get round people.  Even PO & YM seem to have lost a degree of speed.

I think it must be a pre-requisite when we sign players to not look for pace.

What got us the point at Fulham was exceptional ball-retention which is what RH bases his tactics around.  We just don't do box-to-box midfielders.  Not one bloke got a tackle in when they equalised because they were too quick.

Swansea can keep position and have pace in key areas which is why they're streets ahead.  We may as well sign Usain Bolt! :P

Albion Matchday Forum / Re: Players at fault as much as hodgson!

The attitude of some of our players stinks - get rid of them, play the kids and get the passion back.

Look at England cricket thought they had to turn up to beat Pakistan.

Attitude is so important in sport.

Dyer & Sinclair are better and will be targetted by big clubs in the summer.

When have we ever had to fight off big clubs for our players?

Doesn't that tell its own story?

Albion Matchday Forum / Re: Players at fault as much as hodgson!
« on: February 04, 2012, 06:33:06 PM »
I think RH has his faults but it's the players to blame ultimately.

If he opens the game up we'll get picked off like under the reigns of RDM and TM.  And we just know it'll end in relegation.

Where we are so poor is the lack of pace.  I reckon we must be the slowest team in the EPL.  It's due to the lack of pace that I point the finger at RH.  He's had 2 windows to address it.  Instead we play with 4 / 5 crabs in midfield, 4 very slow defenders and a battering ram striker in Fortune!

It's hard to accept but Swansea have much better individuals than us and Norwich also to a lesser extent.

And never mind a draw, we need 3 points.

Hodgson is relying on experience.

But Swansea have such a freshness about them - Nathan Dyer, Scott Sinclair, Danny Graham etc.

I think RH faith in our experienced players is misguided - they're not good enough.  There's a whole raft of them.

I would rather see kids playing with something to prove than this complacent bunch of nobodys.
