I think you're looking too deeply to be honest. He has had issues at previous clubs and at international level. If there were mental health issues then surely they would have been picked up previously as he's not exactly a youngster.

He is a very intelligent man who is trying to use every angle possible to get what he wants.

Can't agree with either of those two points Oldbury. I genuinely think PO has some very serious issues relating to his emotional health. I would speculate on what's behind these issues but these are public boards and all that.

Also my opinion is that he is not only NOT very intelligent at all but is easily led, manipulable, self-absorbed and actually not particularly bright. I would agree that he is doing what he is doing to generate positive change for himself, but the cost to his professional and personal reputation is massive. He won't recover from this as a footballer in my honest opinion.

However, despite me worrying about PO himself, my main concern is the Albion and the damage he is doing to US. He's got to go and I think we have to take the hit whatever that costs us. We need to start looking for a decent replacement right away so we're ready when the window opens. That won't be easy as goal-scorers are hen's-teeth rare and pricey.

I am becoming increasingly concerned about PO's mental and emotional health. This is not rational behaviour, even if you take into account the wish to be sacked. Who'd have him? Well ok Redknapp probably. And on the cheap too I suppose.

Well I think we reluctantly gave him a second chance, and he's blown it. That'll do now - if of course it is him and not someone hacking his account, which I sincerely doubt. We should take the financial hit, get rid and move on. COYB!

And east-stand-nick don't lower yourself mate. Hurl abuse by all means, I do think you have the right, but don't let this stupid man mean you get banned for throwing missiles, he's not worth it (as my missus would say!).

I initially thought this might be to do with his recent appearances and looking rather disheveled! Maybe needing some style tips from RDM?

Yeah, I did too. Would have been funnier! Hope SC's had a shave and a new suit for Anfield, you know how smart those scousers are  :D

I dunno.  I think if he wears the shirt and puts effort in then he'll get my support sooner rather than later.  He's an idiot, I'd rather not have him at the club, but if he's willing to put things behind him and put the effort in then I think we should do the same.

West Bromwich Albion will not be a better club if our fans are booing our own player during the game irrespective of his comments.  I'd rather hear a loud boo when his name's read out than ongoing booing during the game (assuming he's clearly trying his best).

We're West Brom, we're bigger than a single player.

Agree with all of that boinging_along, very well put. And this is in no way excusing PO's behaviour but I also think he has some significant emotional issues going on at the moment, which he appears particularly ill-equipped to deal with. Whether this is related to the new baby or an over-fondness for Guinness, or some other issue I don't know and we may or may not find out in time.

Also he's always had a wide streak of arrogance, linked to a fragile and over-sensitive ego, which is sometimes a prerequisite for strikers of his type. And let's be honest he doesn't seem too bright either. I'd say he was open to manipulation by unscrupulous others (fill in your suspects here).

I'd give him some leave on the grounds of health (his or his child's) and then after the dust has settled a bit get him to give a proper, thought through, written apology to the club and also to us. Then he needs to grit his teeth, gird his loins, get out there, take the justified stick he's going to get and do the business for us.

He is absolutely worshipped by a large number of (especially younger) Baggies fans and also we can't afford to just leave him gather dust and let him go cheaply.

Last night mind I'd have sacked him like a shot if I was JP. Calmed down since ;)

When we were getting repeatedly tonked by Liverpool and the like 10 years ago and since, I just wanted us to compete with them. Yesterday I am proud to say we gave it a real go. A real proper flippin' go. That'll do me, even though I'm fully aware that it cost us a point.

« on: October 08, 2012, 06:02:15 PM »
Its only offensive if you take it that way. For me and it seems others its a wind up and nothing more. The booing Ferdinand got was more of a grumble and nothing compared to what Terry and Cole get every time they play here and not anything like what they get when they come here next time I would guess.

And that's the crux of the matter I think, Oldbury. Each of us will have reacted slightly differently. Personally I was offended when I heard the boos for Anton Ferdinand and then the chant/s in support of John Terry. As well as saddened and slightly sickened to be honest. But that's just how I felt, and I'm sure many others felt that it was just as you say, a wind up of the opposition players and fans only. It just didn't seem like that at the time to me personally

Haha.

Hypocritical plonker.

"the Alex Cropley game when they set out for ninety minutes to kick anything in claret"

He should watch Hutton's challenge from last season.

Hypocritical - yes. Plonker? No. He's obviously a bright little seal and has done his research (lots and lots and lots of research) and has lived through some glorious days with his club. I do think that he may have been bullied at school by some rather horrid Baggies,  - although the fact that he still has some Baggies as mates is to his credit. I am slightly concerned about his emotional health long term, or I would be if I didn't despise each and every one of them (just pretend McSkittle, just pretend, I'd never hurt a seal, and abhor violence). We Baggies do seem to be something of an obsession with the poor dear though, don't we? Something got to him somewhere, sometime eh?

After almost a decade of lurking (we just don't get enough televised games in Brazil to justify an opinion), I thought i'd put in my 2 centavos worth (i've got to see 3 of the 6 games live this year). For me, there's been a huge evolution in the style of play this year. Really nicely worked triangles, especially on the wings between backs and midfielders, good organisation - the fact that the team lost two players in the first half and the shape of the play didn't change that much shows that it's a system that dictates the style of play rather than the individual talent of a particular player. Good solid centre back combo suported by two competent defensive minded midfielders gives us plenty of protection. I thought that the link between midfield and attack was fantastic at times (especially the goal) but not consistent, but even teams with much more money to spend complain that there aren't many Iniestas and Xavis available on the market.

Individuals. Long is very, very good at maintaining possession from the long ball. When he came off the ball didn't stick in our half. So, the pressure got too much. One too many corners and then the goal. But, there's a reason why playing away is so difficult. A home team that really wants it and has the crowd behind them is very hard to stop. I haven't seen enough of Lukaku to give an opinion, but he doesn't seem to be a back to goal striker. Popov - fantastic debut, early days but seems to be different class. Can either he or Ridgewell handle right back?

The Brazilian commentators have been consistently praising West Brom's style of play this season and in this game said that West Brom was a technically far superior team than Aston Villa.

So, I thought we were controlling it pretty well for the majority of both halves, especially the first 25 minutes of the 2nd, but in both halves suffered periods of  sustained pressure which could have resulted in goals in the 1st half and did result in a goal in the second half. Why this happened. Not sure, but think it's because we expect too much from Mulumbu in attack and defence. When he gets tired the link between defence and attack breaks down.

Thanks for your regualr conributions. This forum is a great way to keep up with the Baggies.

um abraco

Welcome and a very decent first post bahiabaggie.  :)

On the other hand this is how a Black Country Villa fan sees it...

The fact that every time the Hawthorns gets near capacity then cannot cope, the Alex Cropley game when they set out for ninety minutes to kick anything in claret and blue, Alan Baker, John Woodward, Ray Graydon, their sanctimonious holier-than-thou we're only a little team and we're going to enjoy ourselves everybody likes us attitude, the fact that their most famous supporter made a career out of humiliating their most famous ex-player - a man who it is now known was suffering from a degenerative brain disease, their absolute hatred of us (and me or Coops can supply a list of places to pop into before or after the match for anyone who thinks that they're all nice and friendly), the time we beat them 7-2 in a reserve match then in the return a month later they had nine of their first team playing because they couldn't bear losing again, their pretence of being nowhere near Birmingham despite their post code and phone number, their stupid jumping up and down and making twats of themselves in the name of atmosphere, letting the likes of Soccer AM makes fools of them and degrading all football supporters everywhere by implication, still going on about Ronnie Allen and 1959 like it's the most important thing to ever happen in their sad, woebegotten lives and it probably is, not being able to get a drink anywhere near the ground, constant whining of it ay fair and the world's against them, just watch tomorrow how many of them blame the referee for all seventeen of our goals, moaning that the local press are biased against them despite the fact that they've got more supporters in the media than us and Small Heath put together, Adrian Chiles, Skinner again, endlessly complaining that they would have won the league in 1979 if the weather hadn't turned cold in January like it wasn't the same for every other club in the first division, bleating on and on and on about how loyal they are just because their crowds didn't get as low as the Wolves like that makes any difference, having the highest percentage of middle aged fat blokes walking round supermarkets in football shirts of anywhere in the world including Newcastle, having a civic reception for finishing third in the third division, showing Ossie Ardiles what Smethwick looks like from the top of a double decker bus then wondering why he fecked off the next week, every time a player leaves them they always moan he's only gone for the money even when they're swapping Smethwick for Madrid, Willie Johnstone, that bloody stupid bird stuck on the top of the scoreboard, those executive boxes with corrugated iron roofs, playing the Liquidator just like their big bad rivals in the Stadium of Yellow, that stupid metal sheeting at the back of the old away end that meant I missed every goal when we were three up at half time there, having to play in the morning in the FA Cup 1990, the half time message in the second division "Will Villa supporters please move forward, there are still some trying to get in", boasting about giving a policeman brain damage at Villa Park in 1978 but they're still nice & friendly, being surrounded by the bastards in the Witton Lane stand in 1974, never enough buses back down Holyhead Road, being the only local league club to insist on playing Birmingham Senior Cup games at home and thus depriving the local non-league teams of a decent gate, thinking they have a God-given right to park anywhere they like and moaning when they get tickets for parking on double yellow lines, you can bet there'll be more face paint and stupid wigs per supporter than at any other ground in the country and I include Newcastle in that again, the six w****** shouting their gobs off on the bus when I was going back home after the game in 1982, the very quiet one who was left when his five mates got off, the 1887 cup final when they planned to get the train back via Worcester to avoid travelling through Birmingham with the cup, except the cup went straight back to Aston without them ha f****** ha, coming up and saying that they weren't going to spend any money because they wanted to go straight back down and use the parachute payments to get back again, Skinner and Chiles walking up and down Witton Lane looking for camera crews, making out Bryan Robson was a returning hero when they'd hated him ever since he left, forgetting now that they wanted him hung a month after he became manager, the day they stayed up and reckoned everybody in the country loves them because they're such a nice inoffensive club with wonderful fans, having to get coaches to come three miles down Island Road, that f****** sanctimonious Grorty Dick fanzine that used to call us arrogant yet made out that they were such a big club, then had a celebration issue when they beat us in a youth match I kid you not, being the only Villa supporter in a school of 1,600 of the bastards when they didn't care about Wolves, getting a manager sacked because of a low crowd for a pre-season friendly, Alex Cropley again, Eric Clapton and I'm sure UB40 used to say they supported them when they were good, the f****** Albion that is not UB40, having their end named after a city they hate, an evening paper that treats playing Manchester United in the league in the same patronising way that Kidderminster Harriers would get in the FA Cup, Jim Cumbes dropping down two divisions because our crowds were bigger, treating reserve matches as something really big and important, having a shopping centre in the town and gates at their ground named after a player who scored in a cup final and cost England the World Cup, this supposed 'big club' making a fuss of winning the third division play-offs, Terry Wills who although he is a very nice man should be told that he does not have to go on every radio station after every match, asking us to play friendlies and still treating our supporters like poo, wanting every manager sacked after three defeats, Bob Taylor, every one of their supporters over fifty was at the ground when they relegated us in 1959 and will talk forever about it but none of them remembers us stopping them winning the league four years earlier, you're not telling me it's a coincidence that Alistair F****** Brown got a job working for them after his thuggish career was mercifully brought to an end, knowing more about how Bayern Munich should have won the European Cup in 1982 than Bayern Munich do, my irritating little poo of a cousin who used to support Manchester United then got a season ticket up there when they got into the Premier League, including Prisoner 820468 Hughes, L, in a book called Cult Heroes and I bet the family of the bloke he killed have got a better and similar description for him, some knobhead I heard saying all he wanted to do when they went down was come back up win the cup and kick **** out the Villa then talked about football for ten minutes and never once went off the subject of how much he hates us, I bet that Everton fan they blinded thinks they're lovely, a town centre where the best pub is a Wetherspoon's and the best restaurant is McDonalds, how every time we beat them and there's a lot to choose from they always complain that they'd rather lose than play like us like they have a choice, putting reserve teams out in games they're going to lose anyway but it's alright for them to do it, every time they come up saying they don't intend to spend any money because we're only a little team and we're doing ever so well to be here in the first place, Tony Mowbray always claiming moral victories...

Watch the language, please.

You seem a tad overly-obsessed with us madam.

To be fair a draw was about right and we should be happy with a point. But I'm not fair when it comes to the Vile because (did I mention this?) I REALLY hate Villa (sssspppit!).
Brunt looked quite bad on the telly - definite hamstring and several weeks out. Jonsey seemed to twist his own knee with no-one anyone near him. Not been his season so far, poor lad.
Vile fans celebrating as if they'd won at the end. Quite a lot of them seemed a little over-excited too. Poor dumb animals. S'only a game after all. :D

Very good post Albion 79, and probably you are absolutely correct.

Having said that - Vile fans? As friends?  Good gracious me!

My brother went out with a female one of them for a couple of years in the 1980's. They nearly got engaged I think. Apparently she was very nice. I wouldn't really know as I never spoke to her  :D

No disrespect meant Guys but Villa Fans do not consider this a derby game in any way!!

We have one derby game and that is against Small Heath Alliance!

I actually think you will be surprised on sunday and i am backing Villa to get the 3 points!! :P not to say it is gonna be easy, in fact i think it will be bloody hard but i am sure Villa will do it!

Gabby looked back to his best against Citeh and will no doubt start the game, Villa 2 - 1 West Brom is my forcast

No disrespect to you either Loyalvillan, but I don't care what you or this mythical group of Vile supporters think. Your team, its supporters, your stadium, Aston as a place in and of itself and the colours claret and blue when juxtaposed next to each other are what I depise most in football and in life. I would never hurt one of you of course, I totally abhore violence, and if it wasn't for you I'd have to (pretend to) hate someone else, but I personally cannot say the words A**** V**** without spitting. You can please yourself who you hate - for me it's you, always you.  Now go away and eat some fish.

My Dad (a scouser and Liverpool fan who had moved to Smethwick for work) took me and me brother to the Hawthorns for a birthday treat in late 1967. I was 8. Baggies nil, Leicester City nil. Leicester wore red. I was totally hooked. I remember John Osborne dropping the ball on the line at one point!

Been a bit up and down since then  ;)

Me too! One for me and one for our kid. Nice to think we're "part of it all" despite living so far away. They'll be there 'til they knock it down, too! ;D

I am a Baggie who has lived in Swansea for 25 years. I was at the game yesterday with my brother, nephew, sister-in-law (who live in Porthcawl) and our friends John and his wife Helen who are Baggies living in the Isle of Wight.

Yesterday, for the first time in my 45 years of supporting the Albion I was ashamed. The "No Surrender" nonsense in the bar area was not a good start, although I've heard it many times; then the minutes silence was ruined (after we'd won some moral high ground back by applauding Brendan Rodgers' father, the dead miners, a young Swans fan who'd died, and our own youth player); then the minutes silence was totally desecrated by thugs who MUST have known what was going on.

No, don't argue. You knew. And don't give me that apologist "Swansea fans this, Swansea fans that" either - just a discrace.

This however was not the worst. A group of about 6 young people with a couple of 40-odd year old so-called "adults" spent the rest of the game not watching anything in front of them whatsoever. They stood up and obscured the views of an entire family of Baggies - who understandably left after the 3rd goal; they spent the entire game goading the nearby Swans fans; they were obviously drunk and looking for trouble.

Then the worst - "Going down with the miners, You're going down with the miners" - at which point I exploded. A disgrace to themselves, their families, the human race and our football club. Which is what I told them. Because they are. No excuses, especially "we had been drinking all day" - is that going to be your defence in court when you get there?

I now have to persuade my brother to keep going and that there are many, many of us who abhor this behaviour and will not tolerate it. Otherwise I have no-one to share my petrol costs to the Hawthorns!

Excellent post that Baggie. And I agree, but of course everyone on here is also a fan and also entitled to their opinion. I think some are naturally somewhat pessimistic in their outlook when the Baggies are concerned. And given our history who can blame them.
I remember an old Baggie fanzine "Fingerpost" which was a great mag, but I was once told that their motto "Temper Se Fallant" translates from the Latin as something like "They'll always let you down". Mmmm.
I think all of us care passionately about the Baggies, but many have a cynical view of players, managers, board etc. even other Baggies fans at times. Some I have heard have even been known to boo their own team.
Personally I'm a glass half full type - and we're doing fine by me! :D And I'd support them regardless of which division we're in, as would everyone on here I'm sure. These players, this manager, the board and Chairman are all only temporary. The important thing as far as I've been concerned is that there will always be The Albion for the people of the Black Country and beyond to support so long as there is football.
