Have a look at the top six in the prem today.....says everything. I'll be glad when they f**k off and form a super European league or something.

I despise the premier league and what it has become....but I'd dearly love us to go back up even if its just to re-establish the respect opposition fans used to have of our approach to football before Pulis came along. Everyone hated us under Pulis the last couple of seasons and it still hurts me when I think of that. We at least need to put that right, surely?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Guochuan Lai
« on: January 11, 2019, 01:37:29 PM »
Lai has little money, and needs the club to be self sufficient. Jenkins has been bought in to balance the books, and we still need an overdraft. The bids for Dack and Tavernier were only to make it look like the club was serious and had ambition. We won't be signing anybody permanently this window unless they are on a free.

Quite. Sad but true...that's why I said 'pivotal moment'. Despite the recent upturn in belief and anticipation levels from our fans we're now in danger of becoming just another mid-table championship club for a long time to come.

The (inevitable) departure of Harvey Barnes is a pivotal moment for the future of our club. Now is the time for Lai and the board to show us some intent of their ambition...and go all out to buy Dack.

We all knew it was coming, but Christ, I feel sick to the stomach. We'll do well now to reach the play-offs IMO.

I actually think he was at his peak playing for us. As you say, he was the complete player - we must have played him in pretty much every outfield position and he was bloody brilliant whether you stuck him.

Spot on. He was deceptively quick too before the first leg break...he lost a split second of pace after that. I also think we saw the best of him.

Results like todays highlight just how significant the January window will be....we'll see the level of intent from the board. For me, we need someone like Dack in the middle and another striker......but not on loans. The current over-reliance on Barnes and Gayle is a huge problem in the long term.

The kid is unfinished and makes mistakes.  He drifts in and out but he does the kind of magic that others cannot.  Enjoy those moments while you can.

He's why I'm in love with the Albion again. Such a joy after the Pulis wilderness years. We should break the bank to try and keep him.

Its very quiet on here tonight!

Right now (4.30pm) I'd be happy (ish) with a point.

Thought we were very lucky, they missed some glorious chances and smacked the woodwork. JRod is awful, we'd be woeful without Barnes, Gayle is not a winger and we missed Morrison terribly. Sadly, Brunt is finished IMO.

I hope the board are aware of our need to re-invest in the window because we can't continue to ride our luck like this. Great that it happened to the vile though!!  ;D

Controversial but i have a feeling DM will go  4--5 - 1..with Brunty installed left midfield...

A defeat then in that case.  >:(

I'm just praying Barnes and Phillips will be on fire and we can give them something to worry about.

Mine will be at 9.45pm this Friday if we lose. ???

Bomber at Oldham.

Second goal against Swansea in play-off semi. I still have the bruises from the mayhem in the Brummie.

The day Pulis left.  ;D

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Best/Worst Memories of Games Against Vile
« on: December 01, 2018, 05:23:54 PM »
Get the worst out of the way first:

1) DV2 1975, (A) L 1-3: Not long before Don Howe was sacked. 1-0 up at half time but collapsed in the second half. Dogs started screaming throughout the land as the Vilers' delighted squeals went into ultrasonic. They got promoted at the end of the season.
2) DV1 1981, (A) L 0-1: The week we effectively gifted them the title by beating Ipswich and then losing to them. Outplayed them before Brendon Batson's disastrous back pass handed them victory on a platter. The away end was dangerously overcrowded too.
3) League Cup R4, (H) L 1-2: One of the worst refereeing performances I've ever witnessed. Think we ended up with 9 men. Robbed.
3) FA Cup R4 1998, (A)L 0-4: The gulf between the clubs was so huge that the chants of 'we'll never play you again' seemed pretty reasonable. High pitched renditions of Vera Lynn. Stan Collymore.
4) FA Cup QF 2015, (A) L 0-2: Possibly the worst week I've experienced as an Albion fan. Bottled it.

And now for some better ones:
1) League Cup R5 1965, (H) W 3-1: One of the first games I can remember and certainly the first win over the Villa. Big crowd, fantastic atmosphere and of course we went on to win the trophy.
2) League Cup R2 1966, (H) W 6-1: Should have been about 12. I kid you not.
3) League Cup R2 1970, (A) W 2-1: Albion all over the Holte End. Thoroughly took the piss. Great night.
4) DV2 1973, (H) W 2-0: Boxing Day special. Wonderful atmosphere and God knows how many fans were squeezed in.
5) DV2 1974, (A) W 3-1: Great game in an otherwise deeply disappointing season as we did the double over them. Only time we've done so in my life thus far.  :o
6) League Cup R5 1982, (A) W 1-0: Made up somewhat for the calamity the season before. One of the best goal celebrations I've ever been involved in, as attested by the bruises the next morning.
7) DV1 1984, (H) W 3-1: Best last five minutes ever?
8) Premier League 2005, (A) D 1-1: Robbo!
9) Premier League 2011, (H) W 2-1: About bloody time.

Yep, that was a terrible night. I mentioned in the 'most depressing thread' how me and hundreds of other albion fans were let in for nothing when the police opened a gate at the witton end due to crowd pressure outside just after kick-off.

Yep to bold text 2! Right up there with the 3-2 over the Wolves (Darren Bradley!).

And I will never ever forgive Pulis for the cowardice and capitulation in the FA cup defeat.

Anyone else think he might need a break from starting every game now?

No way! He's that rare type of player who can change a game in a split second. I say make the most of him while we still can!

The 78 and 82 FA Cup semi-final defeats. I still haven't got over them.

Handing the vile the 1st division title at their place in 81 when we technically still had an outside chance ourselves. Anyone who doesn't know they beat us 1- 0 in the last couple of minutes (following an error from Batson) after we'd played them off the park. Me and hundreds of others got in at the Witton End for nothing when police were forced to open the gates due to crowd pressure. My vile mates told me the same happened outside the Holte just after kick-off.

Oh, and the Pulis era.

Whilst this is absolutley true, we did get good money for the players that left (in comparison) and we did nothing with it from a playing staff perpective.  >:(

Re-built the Halfords Lane then spent years going down the pan until the Ardiles era. Still angry now!! It could happen again if we fail to invest in three or four crucial positions in January.

You shouldn’t change a winning team. The team that beat Leeds earns the right to go again.

I agree. But will Darren?

Can't see how he can in a 433 and to revert to 352 would be madness.

Indeed. But, dressing room influence and club captain etc....

Unless Phillips, Barnes and Morrison have absolute stormers we'll be battered.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Darren Moore
« on: November 03, 2018, 08:34:35 PM »
We're 5 points off the top of the league after 16 games, not 5 points above relegation with 16 games to go.

Yes, the football hasn't been pretty so far this season, and we haven't won for a few matches, but calling for the sack at this stage is not going to help our cause. Not asking for names, but who realistically is there who would be a good appointment for us? No one at present.

And before anyone says "should have got dean smith", we didn't, so it's not even worth thinking about. Lots of things could have happened, but this is the situation, and managers get the sack way too early nowadays because fans are too impatient.

I think our fans are proving to be remarkably patient. We've been pretty crap for three seasons now (cheers tone) and its going to take a long time for us to rebuild. I feel sorry for Darren because he has inherited an incredibly difficult task that may well hurt him hard if he can't pull it off....and that would be sad.

Don't know how we are selling these tickets but if there are seats available it wouldn't surprise me if there will be more than a few Leeds getting tickets in our end.

Indeed. Could be iffy, Leeds really don't like us one jot.
