West Bromwich Albion FC / 40 years ago today (yesterday actually)
« on: December 30, 2018, 06:14:30 PM »
30th December 1978 Game of the century.
I’d love to say I was there but I wasn’t.
I went to Arsenal away on the Boxing Day and then at home to Bristol City on New Year’s Day when most of the country was called off.

trash talk sells tickets but can backfire like last night.
He should have retired after the Mayweather blag, I'm not sure what else he aims to achieve in MMA.
He'd make a decent career out of films, ala Seagel, Van Damme, etc

West Bromwich Albion FC / Albion Premiership goal scorers list

Wonder if Rondon will ever surpass Odems Prem record.

There's a big tidy up operation going on at All Saints Church at the top of Newton Road West Bromwich.
volunteers are giving up their spare time to clear loads of undergrowth to reveal some very old headstones, including several war graves not to mention the headstone of a certain Albion legend William Isaiah Bassett!
Theres a piece in the Black Country Bugle asking for volunteers to help out.

Edit, there's quite a bit of history to this graveyard as Captain James Eaton is also buried there, he served the Royal Navy during the battle of traffalger and was aboard the signal ship HMS Temeraire when Lord Nelson ordered the signal 'England expects that Everyman shall do his duty'
Just down the road at the other churchyard is a headstone in honour of John Woodward, another West Bromwich son who perished on the Titanic while playing bravely on in the ships band as it went down.

Any ideas

West Bromwich Albion FC / Albion 100 goals club.
« on: December 19, 2011, 03:19:00 PM »
Just wondering if the Albion century goalscorers club will ever have a new name added to its list of legends.
Bomber 279
Allen 234
WG  228
Astle 174
Derek Kevan 173
Carter  155
Glidden 140
Super Bob 131
Morris 118
Cyrille 112

It would take some doing in this day and age, especially if we manage to stay in the top flight for the foreseeable future.

General Football & Sports / West Sam Utd imminent.
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:32:03 PM »
Looks like Big Sam will sign for West Ham this week by all accounts.
They wouldn"t appear to be natural bed fellows style wise but he does have a decent championship record although its been 10 years since he took Bolton up in the play offs.

The point i would like to make is how many other fairly accomplished premiership managers would take that step backwards ?, remember he was interviewed for the England job a few years ago.

With the exception of any FA cup final victory involving Albion i was pondering what sporting occasions i would like to have seen in the flesh but didnt.

In no particular order...

1981 Ashes 2nd test at Headingley inspired by Beefy Botham.......Ozzy basher

1985 Marvin Hagler v Thomas Hearns at Caesars Palace, one of the best fights of all time......Hagler top man

1978 Old Trafford , i was at Arsenal on the Tuesday, home to Bristol City the following monday but bleeding missed this one. Mug........

2004 Ryder Cup in the US revenge for their behavior at Brookline in 1999. Smacked em in their own back yard. USA.USA.USA..............Shut up.

1966.........How could anyone forget 66" ?.......won the league cup v West Ham

West Bromwich Albion FC / Sorry for harping on you young uns,,,
« on: April 06, 2011, 07:40:24 PM »
I dont class myself as old, 44 this year, but when i think of the last time we beat Liverpool 30 years ago and i can still remember standing in the BRE as Robson backheeled Ray Clemence in goal, and make no mistake we hammered pool that day Hansen, Dogleash et al, it makes me realise that when i went to my 1st Albion match in 1977 i had missed probably the best Albion team ever by a mere 23 years.
A truly great side by all accounts.
It will happen to you one day so please bear with us "old uns".
And remember tomorrows page is yet unwritten.

General Football & Sports / Two draws or One win, One defeat?
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:45:33 PM »
Given the option would you take 2 draws against this pair? or ONE win and stomach ONE defeat for the sake of an extra point that might make all the difference.
i aint talking losing 1-0 and winning 4-0.
Both scores 1-0.

General Football & Sports / As a Neutral !!!
« on: March 22, 2011, 06:50:23 PM »
Have you been invited to a match as a neutral?
Who with, what happened?
I went with some Spurs fans to Seals away last season and, although not really a neutral, wanted Spurs to smack em i was able to enjoy the match more than usual.
Worked in Leeds early 90s and went with some locals to see them play Man U on Cantanas 1st match back at Leeds, that was interesting!
Also been to Walsall a couple of times with a mate, but no intensity!
There must be a few on yeah...........dont say its just me ffs. :-[

West Bromwich Albion FC / If you build it will they come ?
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:28:15 PM »
Bearing in mind that 2 of our relegation rivals have new or extended stadiums in the pipeline (Dogheads n Ammerheads) with capacities far in excess of their current match day attendances.
I cant help but feel a hint of envy if the subject title is proved to be correct, that our nearest and evilest would be getting 30000 plus a week, obviously subject to survival, while we cant even get a proper sell out.
I understand that JP has got the blueprint to increase the Halfords stand and i am lead to believe that we have had the civils prepared under the Halfords Lane to accommodate the extra tier if that's the plan.
Because if it ever does come off we dont want to be giving the entire smethwick end to the away fans just to relocate the same fans elsewhere in the ground would we? Would we increase the capacity in increments? say extend beyong the woodman then see how we go? Got to admit the Halfords looks a bit like a League One sides main stand even allowing for the recent facelift.
So what would it take to get the "1st game/ last game/Man U game" people through the door for the rest of the season? Premiership status accepted.

General Football & Sports / Clayheads or Media darlings ?
« on: March 12, 2011, 08:20:03 PM »
Its Stoke V West Ham tomorrow, i aint got any time for either one of these clubs but its West Ham who really wind me up. The press coverage they enjoy, the fact that Carlton Cole, Robert Green, Matty Upson etc etc get selected for England, the colour of their sodding strip. The "Appy Ammer" reputation ? The Sheff utd / Tevez relegation fiasco a few years ago.

So i just wondered does any one else feel the same way or is it just me supporting the clayheads tomorrow?
