General Football & Sports / Statistics in Football
« on: April 24, 2014, 10:04:17 PM »
Reading the Chris Brunt topic has got me thinking about the nature of statistics in football, especially in light of Bayern v Real yesterday. With the rise of Opta, Pro-zone, online betting, and even the 'moneyball' approach to scouting and developing teams, statistics have an even increasing influence on the sport. Yet out of the major sports, surely football is the hardest to quantify in terms of statistics?

We have all seen those sublime pieces of skill or those horrendous mistakes that go on to define matches, seasons, even careers, but which won't really feature on the statistical analysis of a match. I can think of any number of goals which cannot be adequately defined by statistics.

Likewise, because of my accounts background, I know about how easy it can be to manipulate figures. Often what might seem high or low can be might be the opposite when put into context... but then the context can be shifted as well.

So where do we all stand on statistics in football? A useful tool, a nice discussion point, or is the only statistic that matters the league table?

West Bromwich Albion FC / 2012/13 Home Kit

Does anybody know where I can get one from?

I went to the club shop at the ground, and they only had a few 3XL shirts left. I've looked online, and can only see one via a slightly dodgy website.

General Football & Sports / Clubs in Crisis

I thought it might be a good idea to have one thread devoted to news and opinions about 'Clubs in Crisis'.

There were two pieces of news today that made me think of it; the good news is that Pompey are finally in the hands of their supporters, and should now be able to put at least some of the problems behind them.

Meanwhile Bury are supposedly very close to going out of business.

Very worrying development. Does anybody know if David Worrall and Lateef Elford-Alliyu are still there?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Season Review 2002/03
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:12:54 PM »
I'm looking for a copy of our season review DVD from 2002/03, our first year in the premier. I've tried Amazon, I've tried ebay, I don't know where else to look.

Can anybody point me in the right direction, or know of somewhere in the Midlands I might find a copy?
