Very impressive discipline from the Chelsea players after Terry was sent off. Barca, of all teams, had no ideas how to tear down the Chelsea defensive wall.

Reminded me of the away game at Blackpool last season, red card, he give himself a time to think about what to do, got it brilliant in this game and the Blackpool game, just got the result in this game.. Bosingwa and Ivanovic looked better than Cahill and Terry, they never found a way through the mid defence in the second like they did the first 20 minutes or so.

Very happy for Matteo and Newton, don't care about the others..

Just waiting now for the media to Bash West Brom over sacking RDM. They can do one, look at Avran Grant in 2008 2nd placed finish and a Champions League Final, he follows this up by relegating 2 clubs. Not saying RDM is a bad manager but am sick to death of glory hunters and the cockney media giving us a hard time.

Superb display from RDM and the Chelsea boys tonight, well done.

Theres some nasty comments about John Terry on here but have a look again at his so called offence, in the Prem he would at most got a "stern" yellow.

I am so glad a gritty prem side turned over that bunch of pampered pansies.

It was just great to see the under-dogs go and cause an upset more than anything, whilst playing some pretty obscure football at times with the likes of Drogba and Ramires playing as wing-backs.

I doubt he'll win the final - but I said the same vs Barca. I just think it's a step too far, and with 4 key players out they will struggle. That said, Cahill and Luiz should be fit, and there's an undeniable grit about the team which keeps going. It would be great for Di Matteo and Newton to win.

Well done Chelsea. Always support English clubs in Europe and they kind of typify how England could win a Major trophy. Yes it aint pretty but its effective and something our natiojnal team should work towards rather than trying to match obviously better technical players.

Ashley Cole was brilliant in both legs.. yes he's a bit of a T***, but there's no better LB in the world.

I saw an article saying Roberto spent a lot of time last year around Europe topping up on his coaching.

We simply had him a couple of years too early. Imagine if we had had him when he knew about both defence and offence :)

Very good semi final overall I thought, never quite hit the heights of the first half but I wonder how fatigued the Madrid players were after the El Classico on Saturday. Dissapointing penalties in the shoot out which addded to the tension and excitement. I'm a bit gutted Mourinho won't have chance to shove one up Roman but never mind.

Bayern or Chelsea? Germany vs England? - Come on Chelsea. I couldn't stand their arrogance if they won, but any English victory over the Germans is one which should be celebrated.

It was just meant to be. Chelsea just got that undefeatable crazy cup run luck on their side. Strange to see so many key Bayern players crumble at key moments (and Barca players). But Chelsea did what they could and got the results. Congrats :)

Congratulations to Chelsea, it wasn't pretty but they managed to get across the line. Thought they were pretty poor. To get into the champions league final and not have a go until they went behind was poor in my opinion but they were lucky Didier Drogba came to their rescue. I did cheer when he scored the winning penalty because they were representing England at the end of the day but I'm not looking forward to their arrogance next season.

The Champions League groups for the 2012/13 season have been drawn:

Group A: Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Paris St Germain, Dinamo Zagreb.  Hard to know who will come out of this group

Group B: Arsenal, Schalke, Olympiakos, Montpellier.  Arsenal could have a bit of a problem here IMO

Group C: AC Milan, Zenit St Petersburg, Anderlecht, Malaga. Milan and Zenit are my tip in this group

Group D: Real Madrid, Manchester City, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund.  City are doomed

Group E: Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, FC Nordsjaelland.  I know Chelsea are the champs but this may be a step too far

Group F: Bayern Munich, Valencia, Lille, BATE Borisov.  Munich and Valencia for me

Group G
: Barcelona, Benfica, Spartak Moscow, Celtic.  Sorry to say this but Bye Bye Celtic

Group H: Manchester United, Braga, Galatasaray, CFR Cluj.  United look to be in the best position of any of the British sides

Don't be sorry to say bye bye Celtic  :P

Group D is mouth watering. Fantastic group. I thought Man City had a tough group last season but this is even worse. Would certainly say out the British teams, they look most under threat to not make it past the group stage. Some tricky ties in there but the English sides but at the same time, mouth watering ties.

Time to bring this back I reckon. Real Madrid vs Man City tonight. Promises to be a cracking game.

I dunno. Ronaldo really smacked it. Even if Hart had gotten to it, with that wicked bounce it took, he never would have held it.

As a class keeper myself ;) he should have had both.

The first should have been read much sooner, reaction was far far to late. Should have been some footwork as Benzema turned.
The 2nd at very least should have been parried away.
He knows he should have had both.

Agree that Kompany ducked when he needed to show a bit more bravery and let the ball cannon off him if needed. It did seem to fox Hart but it was straight at him so I still think he will be a bit disappointed that he didht just stand his ground and get something in the way of it.

Surprised this hasn't been updated tonight:

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Juventus after being 2-0 up

Man United beat Galatasaray 1-0

Celtic managed to get a draw against Benfica  >:(

Barcelona also over-came a scare against Spartak Moscow to win 3-2 after initially being 2-1 behind.

Well Man United should certainly make the quarters and Arsenal are still in a strong position.
Was a bit surprised hearing the Sky commentator on the Dortmund vs Madrid match calling a home win for the German champions a major shock against a Real side who haven't exactly been demolishing all before them this season.

Brings all the best european teams and differing styles of football together in one competition. I guess thats just how different people see it then Hunnington. I dont watch every Champions League game but when I do I often enjoy watching the top players from other leagues. I dont know if you have seen it but on a Monday night there is now a Bundesliga highlights show which Ive found entertaining. I have been to a few Bundesliga games live and the atmosphere at German games is generally very good.

Could be a lot of truth to that. However, with Rangers gone from the SPL and no other serious challengers, Celtic can almost fully focus on the big Champions League game and plan and prepare accordingly.
I feel this has partly attributed to their success so far in getting out of what certainly hasn't been the softest of groups that they could have had.

They beat Seville the other day 4 - 0 with all 4 goals coming from Seville corners !!! Seville took the corner, it got cleared and Madrid scored on the break. From open play, Madrid create f/all !!!

Terrific result from United. Defensively solid although I thought Madrid looked quite flat at times. De Gea, Evans, Ferdinand, Jones, Evra, Carrick, Kagawa, Welbeck all had very good games

Looking forward to the second leg.

Kagawa? I thought he was terrible, Rooney was abysmal and Van Persie should have bagged at least 2 but hey anyone can have an off day. Welbeck was excellent and the defence as a whole were bang on.

Referee totally bottled a blatant sending off when Evra was through on goal.

If Man U can do a job on Ronaldo I think they'll win the home tie quite comfortably, minus Ronaldo and Ozil (1st half) I didnt see a great deal to be afraid of though I think you will see Pepe back for Madrid.

I thought Kagawa had a good game and caused Madrid problems when he started playing off the back of Van Persie. Thought he utilised the ball well until towards the end where he became tired and eventually replaced.

Agree with the red card shout. Referee bottled it.

Don't think the away goal will play much of a part to be honest, I expect Madrid to score at Old Trafford and therefore cancel out the away goal.

Making contact with your studs on an opponents chest is a red card.Fergie would have wanted one had it been on Rooney and so would the OT crowd.

Unintentional and harsh maybe, but a foot up,dangerous play and red.
Title: Re: OFFICIAL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE THREAD
Post by: leeiswba on March 06, 2013, 05:34:36 PM
Dont think it was a red. A red is for Serious Foul Play which the rule book says should be given if the tackle involves using 'excessive force' I dont think it was using excessive force, the only reason it looked bad was becasue the Madrid player literally ran into the foot aswell.

If it was dangerous play that would only result in a indirect free kick and no caution.

The red card was given for Serious foul play not dangerous play and I dont think it was serious foul play.

I think the rules would apply if this were an incident where two players challenging for the ball and Nani had raised his foot recklessly or with intent... but it wasn't. He simply tried to bring the ball down with a bit of skill and the other player ended up get a prod of the chest. They way he rolled around was pathetic. This is something that happens in every game of football and if a player raises his foot to control a ball means he has to be sent from the pitch then i feel the game is being ruined. Never was that a red card

I agree. Actually if you look at the incident closely in slow motion it appears that he in fact just catches his arm with more of a glancing blow. The Real player went down like he had been felled by a Canadian forest logger.

I'm over the moon when our biggest teams lose any game, but particularly when they get knocked out in Europe. British football is loaded significantly in favour of these clubs and the "Champions" League format and qualification just serves to perpetuate this. I'd back any British clubs that don't often get into Europe, except if they're from London of course!

As for the sending off of Nani, Ferguson would have been baying for a red card had a Real Madrid player made that challenge and clubs like Man Utd get unjust decisions going in their favour week-in, week-out. I don't see him saying anything about those, so I found the whole incident and the ultimate result hilarious. Sulking after the match showed no class, particularly for a club which gets so many dodgy decisions in its favour.

We can but also hope that PSG get knocked out in the next round so that we can spared yet more shots of Beckham sitting in the stand.

I wouldn't agree. Yes he's English but he hasn't played in the English game for many years. When Chelsea won it last year did David Luiz represent the Brazilian game? I don't think one player winning something for a foreign club can count as an achievement for English football as a whole.

And they were so offside in the end! Looked like a rugby game, that final push. But it was good football. I like it when the officials take more of a hands-off approach. Totally neutral on this, but I felt bad for poor Malaga. So close!

And they were so offside in the end! Looked like a rugby game, that final push. But it was good football. I like it when the officials take more of a hands-off approach. Totally neutral on this, but I felt bad for poor Malaga. So close!

What by missing the biggest decisions of the season. bit of a farce!

Outstanding performance by Bayern last night.  What a team.

Never seen Robben play so well in terms of teamwork and overall play.  Ribery and Muller are top notch too but for me the man who makes them tick is Schweinsteiger.

That has to be one of the best team performances that I have seen this season, Bayern were excellent in every department last night. I fully expect them to make the final now, as I see them scoring at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona are on the decline and I predicted this months ago. They have no strength to their spine, their defence is poor and they have no physical pressence. Messi carries them, take him out of the equation and they wouldn't be in the top three teams in Spain.

Bayern Munich are the best football team in the world, bar none.

Messi looked totally unfit and not with out but, even saying that, Bayern were outstanding and look favourites to win the thing.

However, I have fancied Dortmund since the start so hope they smash Real and make Wembley a colourful Final with their fanatical fans - I think both German sides could fill the stadium with just their home fans !

That's right. If I remember correctly it featured endless fouls and persistent diving before Messi produced a bit of magic from nowhere.

Money wise, El Classico would have been the perfect final with the focus being firmly on the figureheads of modern day football, thankfully, we'll get to watch two efficient German sides who will both produce good football with a far greater team ethic. The way they have both dispatched over the Spanish giants has been eye-opening but entertaining also.

Bayern Munich have already signed Gotze so god knows what they will be like if they sign Lewandowski - This also comes with Pep Guardiola being in charge.

I agree, Ruby.

Finals are always incredibly tight and tough to predict. As you say, that one bit of quality will separate them and I think it will be Bayern overall that will be crowned European champions.

From what I've seen of the competition this season they have both been by far and away the most entertaining sides - better than both Spanish giants.

Champions League final tonight - Dortmund vs Munich.

Both two very good teams and I'm looking forward to the game. I don't have any feeling for either side, I'm hoping for a good game of football but I would like to see Dortmund come out on top giving their troubles many years ago and the way in which they go about their business, recruiting from their academy etc. Bayern are too reliant on purchasing players at high costs and having signed Goetze from Dortmund, it also wouldn't surprise me to see them purchase Lewandowski who is out of contract - no doubt Guardiola shall also spend a bit in the summer increasing their superiority in German football.

I also like Jurgen Klopp. He's a Paul Scharner character and this game needs characters like them.

Going to be an entertaining game.

I feel the same. At the start of the week I wasn't too bothered about either team but the more I hear about them both I now want Dortmund to win tonight without a doubt. They seem to be doing things a bit differently which is quite interesting and Bayern seem very much up their own arse.

Heynckes more or less admitted after last nights final that Robert Lewandowski will be more or less heading to Bayern Munich which will no doubt make them even stronger going into the competition next season.

Be a shame for Dortmund to have their talent poached by their big rivals. Jurgen Klopp will have a rebuilding job on his hands after losing both Gotze and Lewandowksi and it wouldn't surprise me to see Hummels, Gundogan and Piszczek move too.

The quote is here from Heynckes: We know Gotze will be joining us and I don't think Lewandowski will be hanging around too long either

The play-off round draw is tomorrow. Celtic will get one of the following five opponents:
That means traveling Celtic fans will get to go to either:
Hmmm...Vienna or Kazakhstan....  :-\

You've probably heard about Vienna, so here are some facts about Karaganda, courtesy of Wikipedia!

Quote
Karaganda is an industrial city, built to exploit nearby coal mines using the slave work of prisoners of labour camps.

In exploiting the rich coal deposits, the Soviets undermined the entire city, and the town had to be abandoned completely and moved several miles to the south.
Just like Glasgow!  ;D

Quote
In the 1940s up to 70% of the city's inhabitants were ethnic Germans. Most of the ethnic Germans are descendants of Soviet Volga Germans who were collectively deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan on Stalin's order when Hitler invaded Soviet-annexed eastern Poland and the Soviet Union proper in 1941. Until the 1950s, many were interned in labor camps, often merely because they were Germans. The population of Karaganda fell by 14% from 1989-1999; it was once Kazakhstan's second largest city after Almaty. One hundred thousand people have since emigrated to Germany.
Sounds like a real vacation spot.  8)

Quote
Karaganda was often used as the punchline in a popular joke in the former Soviet Union. Karaganda is fairly isolated in a vast area of uninhabited steppe, and is thought by many to be "the middle of nowhere".

All in all, the perfect place for every Celtic and Rangers fan.  :-*

I think Dortmund will play better at home as well so it could all look very gloomy for the gunners soon. Anybody think Lewandowski should have got sent off for the "elbow". I did, in my opinion someone from UEFA must have told both teams and the referee that the game has to be finished as it was an absolute farce. I believe something was said as both teams were just getting on with it and not complaining at all even when the incident happened what you mentioned.

Nothing to do with the fact I had an accumulator with Benfica to win and I would have won something if the game was abandoned, not at all...

But it was surreal, usually the players and managers would be telling the referee that it's dangerous to play on, but they carried on as if nothing was happening! The fans were furious and rightly so, they've paid to watch Champions League football, not the farce that we all saw. To be fair it did improve in the 2nd half, but they essentially had a 70 minute football match. Unbelievable. Surely there are contingency plans to cope with a postponed/abandoned game?

I'd like the to win it so they hopefully go down or at least lose form for the rest of the season, like Blues, Swansea etc have done it recent seasons. Couldn't care less if United get into Europe or not myself.

Chelsea would play a very different style to Bayern. Doubt Chelsea would be looking to dominate territory and possession and leave the big gaps at the back for Madrid's pacy attackers to counter with. Likely that Real would have more of the play but would find it harder to break down Chelsea.
In any case, think tonight is going to be a very cagey affair.

Your forgetting Mourinho's knack of getting big results against the odds like he did with Milan against Barca and again on sunday with Chelsea beating the scousers on thier own tip. Never underestimate him.

Anyway, they have to get to the final first and Atletico may have something to say about that !!!   ;)

Bale is having a mare. His pace gets him behind the defence, but then he can't hit the target from ten yards away.

They're amazingly talented athletes, no doubt, but I don't know if I'd use the word "class" to describe them -- at least not all of them. Sometimes it seems like both clubs are actually competing to see who can appear the most seriously injured with the least amount of contact and who can intimidate the ref the most.

While Atletico clearly are very, very tough to break down, I would not have parked the bus as early as they did.

Pure pace and a big helping of lucky bounce.  :(

Bit od an aside, but Rosenberg has just scored his 2nd of the night, his 4th so far in Champions League qualifying. He's got 13 in 27 games prior to tonight for Malmo....

Totally beyond me how it didn't work for him here. Has talent and worked hard for it to work, plus he's a top bloke.

Shame for us, but I'm happy for him.

I just think it was extremely stupid of the Liverpool player to give the referee a choice to make, despite looking over his shoulder twice he should know he has no need to put his hand out as the opposing player was nowhere near close enough to challenge him. At the same time I hardly see it as a foul to be honest, let them use it as an excuse but anyone who watched the game will be able to tell you they were clearly second best all night.

For me its not a red card, but as someones said above, Markovic looked over his shoulder twice so would have known he didnt need to hold the player off as he was past him anyway.

By looking to 'sheilf' the ball, hes given the referee a decision to make.

Red card all day long. Eyed him up and swung an arm out. He was two yards away so didn't need to do it.

Didn't make a difference to the outcome as Liverpool were shocking, bit like the famous 'atmosphere' . If anything they improved with ten men.

Never a red card
Except that it is... Markovic looks over his shoulder TWICE then flails his arm back with fingers splayed. Essentially even if he didn't make contact, the INTENT is worth a red card by the fat that it was specifically aimed at the player's face. we know there doesn't have to be contact for it to be a dangerous action.

You call whipping a backhand at another person's face a "hand off"?  I call it more of an attempted a B***h slap.. By the rules of the sport near enough ANY intended contact with the face is a sending off. Which as Morany and I have stated is made in this case by the fact Markovic looks to see where the player is before committing. take the refs position into account where he sees the hand in front of the face and not the necessarily the depth and, from his POV, it's stonewall.

Haven't seen anything tonight, they're raving about Messi on TalkShite, what's he done?

Scored 2 and set up 1.

His 2nd goal was pure class, made Boateng look silly, and the finish was absolutely world class.

Well I watched it and whilst it was technically great and lit up by 2 pieces of Messi magic , I have to say I didn't find it hugely entertaining. There will be better games in the play offs, our clubs will "go for it" with more abandon IMO

What a stadium though !

All the english clubs should get through this time, with only Arsenal not winning their group. Don't think that happened for a few years.

I dont like that either mate.

It should be based on being a CHAMPION of something.

League, FA Cup and League Cup and 2nd in the league go into qualification.

I still find it hard to believe that Celtic win the league and have to go through qualifying for the group stages when other teams who win naff all qualify straight away.

With it being on BT Sport aswell there is not much chance of me watching any of the games anyway so I think a lot of interest will be lost in the CL this year

So I assume that Leicester were in a 'proper' tie last night... I thought they did quite well to be honest. Poor penalty decision but other than that, and one ball neatly passed across the six yard with no one on the end I think that they contained Athletico well.

Once again Liverpool fans demonstrate what a bunch of classless hooligans they are. Can anyone doubt that a player sitting on a coach being bombarded with missiles and having its windows broken on the way to the ground won’t have been affected?

They should be kicked out of the competition.

Kompany and Gundogan said it didn't bother them.

Right with you. The way their fans are depicted as loveable, knowledgable, super supporters is laughable. This was not a few rogue hooligans with a bit of jolly banter, this was a concerted, orchestrated attack on the opposition team.

And just because it happens elsewhere? So what?

My question is this, what do you suppose the press reaction would be had Millwall fans behaved like this, or Leeds? There would be howls of anguish and a public enquiry. But those Scousers eh? Cheeky rascals just having a bit of a laugh.

There is obvious and regular conscious bias in refereeing decisions. To remove this, before they consider giving any decision their first thought could be would I give it the other way?

Would take a complete change in mindset and training, but would improve standards imo.

I go back to the Mane red card at Manchester City. Since then numerous high boots have hit players in the upper body and head this season and none have been issued a red card. Furthermore, if that had been David Silva on the Liverpool goalkeeper I don't think it would have been a sending off.

The final point about Oliver in particular and it goes back to the game he referee'd us against Blackpool. When the lad is on a live TV game more often than not he makes decisions that put the spotlight on him as opposed to the sport. Non live TV games he's proved himself to be a very good ref more often than not.

It's no surprise we haven't got any representatives in Russia in the summer if he is our best.

I suppose you would say there wasn't an Italian in their back line so makes it a bit more explicable. Florenzi was right wing back, so it is whether you class him as having played in defence in that role.

I can't see Liverpool not scoring out there, but it should have been all over. Sadly for them, they still have Lovren at the back who is just useless so keeping a clean sheet will always be an issue for them.

I really like Salah on two counts

1) as a person, he comes across as a very decent and humble individual

2) as a player,  this season, he has been outstanding and unstoppable

I hope Liverpool can retain his services, for the good of Liverpool obviously, but also for the PL.

However, I wonder whether this rich vain of form and the quality he undoubtedly processes will be sustainable in a very savvy PL next season and in the future.

That will be the true test of his quality if he can produce season in and season out as do messers Messi and Ronaldo. Then he will be classed as a great.

How? We're talking about THIS years European Footballer of the Year award? What's Ronaldo done THIS season?

Have the candidates for the Ballon d’Or been announced yet? If not, it’s a little premature to be putting any names forward, no matter how outstanding a season they are perceived to have had.

As you such a stickler for context, well here we go, so far this year.

CR7 played 40, scored 42 , Ratio 1.050 G/G (all competitions)
CR7 European Cup played 11, scored 15 Ratio 1.363 G/G

Salah played 47, scored 43, Ratio 0.914 G/G (all competitions)
Salah European Cup played 13, scored 11 Ratio 0.846 G/G

Oh and what has Salah done this season?

Kevin De Bruyne won a Premier League medal, so we know that winning things is no guarantee of an award.

Was always under the impression that the Ballon D'or is based on yearly performance as opposed to seasonal? Hence why it's announced in January and not July.

In 18 games in 2018 Ronaldo has scored 26 goals. He's broken all sorts of individual records and will become the first player to win 100 CL games this calendar year. Ronaldo is on a whole different level. You look at the records Ronaldo has broken and he simply ahs to win it.

In 18 games in 2018 Salah has scored 20 goals.

I thought the Liverpool goalkeeper last night was "Loris" Karius, who I'm on first name terms with, obviously  :D

Spurs keeper has 2 L's in his surname name I believe, Lloris  :D

But I will stand corrected

sorry, my mistake!

Liverpool fans given 16,626 tickets for the final. I bet triple that turn up. They never learn.

Would you expect anything less, I'd certainly travel without a ticket just for the atmosphere ?

Assume RM get same quantity where have the rest gone?
FIFA jollies and back pockets probably

Apparently, Liverpool and Real Madrid will share half the ticket allocation between them, just over 16,000 each. The remaking 50% goes to corporate clients.

When you say 'our game', do you mean the one where he accused us of cheating? Or maybe the one where he celebrated with his team for drawing with us? Or do you mean the English game in general. The one he has a cheeky tooth-filled grin for when things go well, or the snarl when he feels he’s been cheated. I don’t mind you liking the guy, but I’ve met too many like him, I don’t care for him. ¡Hala Madrid!😉

He didn't apologise, he just described the comments he made as "rubbish".

Anyway, let's hope Real Madrid win tonight. The whole structure of the Champions League just serves to increase the ever-growing chasm between the lucky few and the rest, so I don't want British clubs to be successful in it. If you look at the European league tables, you can clearly see the great divide in the vast majority of them. The Champions League is an abomination which has ruined the competitiveness of the game.

Typical.
Last week, he apologised for his comments about us when we drew with them. The problem is that he always acts in the heat of the moment, then reflects later and tries to laugh it off. It's bad management whatever way you look at it as it will have a bad effect on confidence.

Feel for Klopp, Liverpool by far the better of the 2 sides, Salah's arm wrenched out of it's socket by Ramos (no punishment), then the keeper chucked 2 in.

Needs a decent centre mid (Keita) and a decent goalkeeper, and they'll win the league.

I thought Liverpool certainly started strong, and with their high pressing game plan, Madrid we’re struggling to get into the game. After Salah went off, Liverpool started to drift back, opening the game to Madrid. There was only going to be one winner then. Whereas Liverpool are a good team, Madrid have a group of very talented individuals, and it showed. Modric was MOTM for me. Confident, and never put a foot wrong. Marcello looked like he was playing against kids. I must say, it was one of best games I’ve seen in quite a while. I also believe, despite unfortunate incidents, Madrid were worthy winners.

Hardly a mention for Bale's goal - the only two players in the world capable of scoring that were both playing for Madrid last night. The cross was slightly deflected and it took phenomenal timing and athleticism to score it.

Always the same, always have to try and find some injustice.

If they take the red tinted glasses off and watch it properly Salah actually links arms with Ramos first, and then if you’re telling me that within a space of a second Ramos can then think ‘I’ll drag him down and make sure he lands perfectly on his shoulder to injure him’ that’s even more silly.

Was just a coming together where Salah linked arms with Ramos, Arms stayed linked when they went down and Salah fell awkwardly. Very unlucky but it happens.

Jurgen Klopp the Liverpool trophy dodger

I'm glad I didn't have a wager on the game, having been advised that Liverpool were unbeatable in this competition earlier in this thread.

Liverpool showed signs of naivety and Real Madrid's experience, overall quality and class were indisputable in the final analysis.  Additionally, as soon as their talisman went off Liverpool started to flounder and there was only going to be one winner after that. Madrid could and should have scored more, Bale should have had a hat trick but for some quality last ditch desperate defending.

So, Liverpool are still trophyless under Klopp after being in charge at Anfield for 3 years and was this Klopp's third or fourth loss as a manager in a European final?

I do feel for Salaha and hope he recovers from injury in time for the World Cup, he is a quality player and would grace that stage.

I also felt for the young man Loris Karius, his mistakes cost Liverpool, but he wasn't alone on the night although his errors were glaring. I was surprised at the final whistle that it was the Madrid players that were consoling a distraught Karius with not one Liverpool player in sight to do so that I saw. I hope he can recover from this nightmare display and go on to have a great career ladened with Trophies
