We can't play the kids and add the experience you want as all of the kids played in midfield or attack, so you'd be getting rid of 2 to bring in Brunt and Morrison.

Personally I'd swap Gayle for HRK and swap Edwards for Barry with Barry taking on the deep sitting role and Harper and Field either side of him.

Stick the first team out, no reason not to. People have been moaning about ambition for years yet say stick the kids out when we have Brighton & Derby for a chance to get to the quarter finals.

I would mix and match for this one as its a good chance to progress with a 'winnable' fixture in the next round.

Bond

Holgate
Bartley
Tosin
Gibbs

Barry
Field
Harper

Leko
Gayle/JRod
HRK

Yep...its looking like Man City v just about anyone else in the final! We should really give it a go and let any players that don't know how great the hawthorns atmosphere can really be like, when given the opportunity.

Anyone know when the fixture date and time is to be confirmed? Still says on the website that it's subject to change due to TV. Seeing as there's only 4 replays there's a chance we could be picked for a TV slot if they're showing the games. Would be good to know before confirming my season ticket seat since I can't go on Wednesday.

Agree with the keeper, back line and mid-field but Leko needs to go on loan to develop some footballing brains to go with his feet.  HRK can hardly trap a ball let alone hold it up.  So short of adequate forwards I would gamble on going 4-4-2 with Hoolahan unless Phillips makes late recovery.

Bond;  Holgate, Bartley/Dawson, Toisin, Gibbs; Field, Barry, Hoolahan, Harper;  Gayle, Rodrigez

Anyone who has already bought tickets, be advised that the prices have now been reduced...

The club will automatically credit the £5 reduction (if any) to your account for future purchases; alternatively "supporters who want a cash refund, either part or in full, should visit the East Stand Ticket Office in person or call 0121 227 2227 to make these arrangements."

I think the nature of Brighton's loss at Fulham (being 2-0 up in first 20 mins and conceding 4 in the 2nd half) will have had a detrimental effect on morale. That coupled with games against Watford and Burnley either side of the reply means that they will have to decide whether to risk playing a strong side and get through to the 5th round or rest their stronger players with their impetus being to stay in the EPL.

I'd be looking to put out a stronger attack than we did last Saturday and maybe give Livermore more game time by playing him in midfield with Field and Harper.

It also depends on any new players coming in.

None of the new guys are eligible as they weren't signed when we played the first game in Brighton.

                                    Bond

Mears               Dawson                 Hegazi                    Gibbs

                  Harper        Livermore                 Field

Robson-Kanu                Rodriguez                                Gayle

Subs: Johnstone, Adarabioyo, Holgate, Barry, Brunt, Hoolahan, Edwards.

I'd protect Holgate as he's the only real right back we have and Barry because of his age. Other than that the only change I'd make is Bond for Johnstone.

No idea who will play. Especially midfield where arguably we should be resting Field and Harper as they are now first choice. Such a shame the new signings aren’t eligible.

                            Bond

Holgate         Adarabioyo      Hegazi         Gibbs

      Harper         Livermore                  Field

                        Hoolahan

                    Gayle      Rodriguez

Subs:
Myhill, Mears, Townsend, Bartley, Leko, Edwards, HRK

I’d go fairly strong but as Dawson’s been a little disappointing for me of late I’d like to see how Adarabioyo would get on alongside Hegazi.

Possibly:

Bond

Mears
Tosin
Bartley
Townsend

Leko
Livermore
Brunt

Harper
Hoolahan
Edwards

I think it's great that the kids are getting game time. Would perhaps start Gayle though, to try and do some damage early on and let Edwards or Harper come on at HT with their pace when the defence have tired a little.

Slightly different note now, and not intended to cause offence, but has an EFL team ever played a team of only PoC? Just for discussion purposes. Because we could do this (outfield players only):

Holgate/Bartley/Tosin/Gibbs
Leko/Livermore/Edwards
Harper/Gayle/Robson Kanu

I only mention this because there's a lot to do with racism in football of late and just wondering if any team has done this.

With the exception of Bartley, I actually quite like this line up.

Think Johansen and Montero will see some game time whether from start or from the bench. Also suspect Harper and Field won't start but all depends on what DM sees as he starting XI at Stoke but I'd go

Bond
Mears
Bartley
Toiusin
Townsend
Livermore
Brunt
Johansen
Lecko
Gayle
HRK
Suspect Gayle won't start though and all assuming Phillips and Morrison are still out

Bond

Mears
Bartley
Adarabioyo
Townsend

Livermore (had a 4 match rest)
Field

HRK
Hoolahan
Leko

Likes of Gayle Brunt and Dawson on the bench with 3 other kids for the sake of appearances but no intention of using them...

I think it will be the same 11 that started at Brighton the other week.

Think DM will trust them to try see the job through.

Personally I would go with:

Bond

Mears
Tosin
Bartley
Townsend

Livermore
Field
Hoolahan

Leko
Rodriguez/Gayle
Edwards

I would be looking to rest Harper, think he needs a bit of down time before being burnt out. I wouldn't be starting HRK either, think if we pop Rod or Gayle up top it gives us more of a goal threat.

Still trying to decide whether to go to this or not. Got my ticket, but am contemplating writing the £11 (£10 plus £1 admin fee which in itself is a joke) off to stay in the warm. Sad state of affairs really, but years of managers that have continually disappointed me are slowly driving me away from the Albion.

You may not feel so entirely just yet but from here it seems you're growing disillusioned with the game.  Felt similar a few seasons back and thought long and hard about renewing my HST. I suggest you may have a decision to make in the not too distant future.

Whatever you decide there's not much point throwing money at something if you no longer derive pleasure from it. Habits can be hard to break but it's not always for the worst. Personally having already stumped up I'd go tomorrow night but start the reflection process regarding renewal and make a decision ASAP for clarity.

All the best on whatever you decide  8) .

The summer we retained Pulis was the first time I seriously contemplated the HST as I knew, and said on here many times in the back end of the season leading up to it, exactly what was coming, but I persevered.

Came to this summer and I was full of hope that we wouldn't just go for the cheap option, we would go for the best candidate and have a fresh start but it has just been another disastrous appointment full of sentimentality and little else. I will admit to feeling disillusioned. I will see how the rest of the season pans out and decide from there, but another season in the Championship with the same manager and a worse squad does not fill me with much promise currently.

You are probably right insofar as it is not just the Albion, but football as a whole. The game that we follow now isn't football to me like it always used to be, it is just commercialism now and the money is sickening.

I'll be there in my usual spot.

Unusually it seems there'll be acres of space around me.

Might make the most of it and have a curry before the game .

My bum trumpet will probably carry a better tune than the drummer anyway  :P  ;) .

COYB  8) .

That wouldn't be hard! To be fair to him he does seem to have learned a bit of rhythm, rather than sounding like he's knocking a shed up.

Speak to the drummer every now and then both home and away. He's a really sound fella and a good laugh, a very decent bloke who loves the Albion through and through. But in all honesty he'd struggle to carry a rhythmic tune in a ruck sack (fair play to him for his efforts though, even if he does my head in from time to time)  ;D .

Wouldn't surprise me to see Morgan Rogers feature in this one.

Would love to see him on the bench. Think the club are giving Tulloch a taste of the first team at the moment, guessing Morgan will be next.

VERY good player, one I hope we keep hold of and look to integrate into the first team in the next 2-4 years.

And if so, and it is still 0-0 do they go to penalties?

4th round replay (us) is extra time and penalties if required.

5th round is no replay and straight to penalties at the end of normal time.

I completely get your drift, when you look at the way Tony Brown, Bob Taylor etc celebrated for this club, heck even Scharner probably, and now we have a bunch of pick'n'mix as our starting 11. The passion is rarely there, most of the time it looks a bit half arsed to me during games when i've seen us this season, not busting a gut for most of the game. The boro' game i feel we were more than capable of winning. And you know, the majority of them are there because they have been signed here, not playing for what the club stands for.

If that's really how you feel then it's no wonder you're disillusioned. If you had of told me in the Summer, after years of crap Pulis/Pardew football, the club in disarray, and having lost our best keeper (Foster), our best centre half (Evans), our best striker (Rondon), and (ability wise) our best midfielders (GK/Chadli), that at the start of Feb we'd be 4th in the league and one of the top scorers in the country I would have snapped your hand off and be delighted about it. I would therefore like to ask what would be considered a good appointment, or even an average one, if this one is disastrous?

Looking at the under23 line up last night, I would imagine we will be seeing a lot of the youngsters again tonight.

Leko, Tulloch, Edwards, Rodgers, Ferguson amongst some the names that didn't feature yesterday.

Fair to say Leko and Edwards will more than likely be in the starting 11, but could one of the others also get some game time?

Agree Robbo_wba , personally I think Darren Moore is doing a great job. I understand that some fans don't agree, obviously footballs all about opinions but its hard to understand how he could be described as disastrous

Absolutely right Robbo. From where we were 12 months ago I will take this all day long. I enjoy watching my team again and that is something I never did under Pulis. I have different views to some about Pardew but that's for another day! We have a chance of promotion at the first time of asking and that will do for me!

Watching this one in Benidorm with a bit of sun on my back but actually looking forward to watchint us play, its a lot different from 12 months ago under Pulis/Pardew when i wouldnt have been bothered knowing we were going to be beat comfortably with no fight or substance.

At present DM has done as good a job as anyone could ask particularly with the current ownership being reluctant to spend money he has brought pride back to the club something we had lacked under the capped one and pardew.

Smethwick - 1270
East Stand - 5692
Brummie - 5589
Halfords - 1895

Sold about 500 for the Smethwick since dinner time which is when I last checked.

Roughly 9300 sold in home ends I think.

Bearing in mind the new signings can't play  ;) , and Darren is yet to show any interest in actually progressing in the cup I expect:

Bond

Mears
Bartley
Adarabioyo
Townsend

Livermore (had a 4 match rest)
Field
Edwards

HRK
Hoolahan
Leko

Likes of Gayle Brunt and Dawson on the bench with 3 other kids for the sake of appearances but no intention of using them...

Ooft, so close, Harper and Rodriguez for Edwards and Leko.

Strong bench too.

Wow.... If your starting point was disillusioned that explains a lot. Regardless of how Darren Moore does at the Albion you sound jaded with the game at this level which I understand.A friend of mine felt the same and hit the limit under the capped wonder.  He started watching local non league and loves it.  I took my little girl to watch West Brom ladies play Wolves and their win bonus at the end of the game was a box of choccies.....playing in front of 200 people in the freezing cold just for the love of it! I recommend it to get back in touch.

I also lost interest under TP and the staying up at all costs mentality, whilst paying mercenarys/average players three times as much in a week than I earn in a year. But I've found having Darren Moore as head coach has helped.  He gets the club and is as near one of us as we could ever get.   I'd rather be in this division with hungry players playing attacking football than ever go back to Pullis ball in the greed league.

Kevin Kilbane on the BBC reckons this:

West Brom have realised they were a bit exposed to counter-attacking football in the first half. Bringing on Craig Dawson for Jay Rodriguez will give them a bit more defensive stability as they switch to a back three.

They have a 38 year old right back. We should be getting at him as a priority, not giving them a buy by playing an inadequate left wing back

The 3 at the back was terrible before, but with Mears and Townsend at full back there's just no sense at all.

HRK is also on a run 13 games with scoring or assisting.

Great to see just how far Field and Harper have come, they look so calm and assured. You wouldn't think it was Harpers fifth(?) Game for us.

Yep, strange that they seem so assured and more like 'senior' players than some of the other fringe players

Yep, we're not going to have any of the ball at all now.

I think that Rogers change was lined up after we'd scored and were winning and wasn't changed for some reason after Brighton scored.

On the other hand, Murray coming on now..

Sadly we care more about promotion than a cup run. Especially with this year without a number of premier league teams left.

The commentators are banging on about how unlucky we are and how Moore must be gutted. I bet he's loving not having the cup to worry about now.

We'd better win on Saturday now after resting for that game or I'm not going to be pleased at all.

Will we ever have a season again where going for a cup is an objective?

All in all not a bad performance from the young lads just let down by the 'experienced' heads. Harper and Field stood out, Tulloch showed flashes and put himself about, Rogers maybe a step too early for the lad but no excuses for the sitter he missed.

Complain all you like about subs and game management but it was obvious neither team wanted to win and it was great to give game time to the young lads who took a premier league team to extra time.

Fantastic to see the kids do so well. Harper excellent tonight I thought. Clearly we had no interest in risking our first team, yet we have potentially lost two or three to injury which is a bit of a nightmare.

If we don’t get promoted and we lose a lot of our first team then we have one hell of a youth team available to us.

Disappointed as would have liked a chance at a run with how the bigger teams have been falling this year.

Sadly it looks like even when we aren't having to fight for survival and thus forfeit the cups we're having to focus on the league still and forfeit this one. Feel for anyone that made that trip and stuck around til the end.

Said it in the in-game thread that I'm expecting our rested players to turn up on Saturday and us to win or I'm not going to be happy. Ironically resting a load of the starting 11 and we've still potentially got injuries with Dawson and HRK (and potentially Field, and maybe J-Rod too?)

Saying that the kids do look bright, Harper and Field are looking more and more like first eleven players and Bond fills me with confidence. Tulloch looked lively also. The young kid Rogers missed an absolute sitter though.

Hopefully that again shows we can't play 3 at the back, especially without decent cbs and a deeper midfielder in the middle. Hopefully it also shows that Bartley should be nowhere near the starting 11, similarly Mears who I thought made some awful decisions tonight.

Kanu did well tonight. I can't believe you're hoping for a long term injury to an Albion player who gave his all. You should be embarrassed.

I'm embarrassed he's a regular starter for us. I must have missed all the goals and assists he provides week in week out.

I think they are intending to bring back the 3 at the back formation and they were interchanging the players to see who worked best

Possible, Brighton were getting there full backs in behind our two wide strikers and causing us problems, I thought Darren switched it to counter that.

A successful exercise in not going through. Ref and Bartley have cost us the game.

We weren't remotely bothered about going through, taking off 1st team regulars and bringing on kids tells the whole story.

Hopefully Kanu is out long enough for Montero and Murphy to make themselves indispensable.

Shame about the total lack of ambition even though I understand it.
This , as I posted myself Moore's done it every Cup game so is to be expected . We can't moan he doesn't play the kids if we don't accept how he does it .
Look how Harper has stepped up in the League after breaking through in Cup games , lets hope the likes of Tulloch do the same.

Fair enough, it is my opinion. I think he has made a lot of strange tactical decisions and subs throughout the season. Tonight was no exemption, reverting to a backthree with Mears as wingback, playing Rogers instead of Gayle, not throwing everything forward last 5 mins and so on

Proud of the youngsters but we do really need to be able to apply the cynical stuff far better. We ended up with  the ten when it was patently obvious Brighton should have been down to that number for far longer. Then of course the dirty little premplayer gets the equaliser. Oh well on with the bread and butter stuff. Bond and Hoolahan deserve a start, Harper and Field should always be in contention and Tulloch and Rogers look good prospects so don’t let them get disillusioned. Mears Bartley etc are what they are, and HRK whilst not any answer at CF generally does a respectable shift at this level. With fairer more even handed officials we might have done a lot better tonight.

I just hope that this game doesn’t cost us more than the cup run. Field and Harper gave their all tonight but looked done for well before the end. As those two have started recent league games, I just hope that they are not injured. A worry over JRod too.

As for all those on here giving stick to HRK, I would question how much of an Albion fan they are; the bloke did well tonight and ran himself into the ground, as he did last weekend. As for Bartley, oh yes, scored a goal, didn’t he? If criticism needs to be given out, give it to the awful BBC for giving us a day less recovery before a big game at the weekend. He certainly didn’t cover himself in glory, he had a 3 or 4 yard head start on the striker and was more bothered about making a half hearted attempt at playing the man not the ball, the only excuse that can be made for Dawson’s defending is he was utterly stunned a professional footballer on 20k a week could take a touch that bounces 7 yards away from him, the defending from both of them was appalling.

If you watch the equaliser again. Bartley is at fault for his own mistake AND the perceived mistake Dawson has made, then a further mistake of his own. After his dreadful first touch he then makes a move towards the ball which causes Dawson to hesitate. Then Bartley waved his arms to suggest he intended to pass the ball to Dawson and THEN he gets nutmegged on the edge of the box. Woeful.

Bartley is rubbish
HRK held the ball up well and was the pick of the Forwads
Tullick looks a good prospect
Field was solid but gets caught in possession too much
Harper plays well for 79 mins and runs out of steam
Mears tries hard but lacks quality
Bond should start in next game

Overall good practice game for youngsters and for future squad development

Later on, Hughton was having a go at the fourth official over some perceived oversight by the ref, the moaning fool should have been thanking the ref for the generosity of allowing Brighton to continue with all 11 players.

That's fine when your second team is almost undiscernable  in quality from your first eleven.   The decision was made early in the season to have a cup side made up of development players and second string....rightly or wrongly....And they have been consistent with it.

Some strange tactics again by Moore or was it by Jones? Jones seemed to be in charge of things at the end of 90mins. Having Hegazi and Dawson on the bench was weird unless the pre game plan was always to have another go at 3 at the back during the 2nd half. We left ourselves susceptible to going down to 10 men by using subs early unless it was forced by injuries. The game was there for the taking tonight with a great chance to get to the QFs and beyond with a kind draw which makes it disappointing.

Same old mistakes cost us really, poor individual errors at the back. Feel if we had a Phillips or Gayle on with that added bit of quality we may have nicked it... If's and buts though... Kids played very well. Tulloch really got us up the pitch and showed glimpses of quality. Bit odd seeing Jones taking lots of the team talk at the end of the game, Moore looked liked he was listening in, maybe it happens but just something i saw. Gutted to go out love the fa cup was disappointed with the attendance tonight aswell, mid week cup game on tv but should be getting more in than that, especially as the digles sold out.

Correct. It's a shame we didn't get more kids out on loan. That Tulloch looks ready for a loan. Nice to see the academy flourishing. Harper needs a new deal. I also thought field had a good game. Rogers had a chance at 2-1 which could have changed the game next thing you know it was 3-1

As said by jacko and co we had no interest in going through or at least risking "senior first team" players to do so. Can only assume Rodriguez got a knock hence why he was taken off. Even so it was a strange sub and he should have either brought on Gayle or one of the young forwards earlier... back 3 a disaster again.

Think hoolahan deserves a go in the first team. Could easily play a free role behind a front 2 of Rodriguez and Gayle (HRK needs and has needed dropping for a while)

Poor by Darren Moore throwing the cup as it is wide open and we had a home draw that was a winnable game. Brighton didn't look that good and over 2 games it was there for the taking and we have blown it.

However I can't fault the players and their effort & commitment. Great to see the kids get a go and look so promising. They should have had 10 men amazed the ref didn't see it. A few more first teamers out there and more proactive subs and we probably be in the 5th round

But Pulis has done that time after time after time and wove his own noose.

Strange sub - but doing this to go to a back three meant Bartley was out of his depth again as cannot play in a three as it has been proved, Brighton looked more of a threat then.

The academy kids did well and bodes well for next season when the superstars have gone.

I just wish we had more aggression - that’s going to cost us promotion as I don’t think the players are up for much of a scrap

Hope I’m wrong

Here's an away view if you're interested.

It is a crying shame that modern football reduces the FA Cup to fringe squad players and on balance I think our squad players probably just about deserved it.

Thought Tulloch looked a real prospect for you and HRK is the kind of immobile big man it is easy to underappreciate - Ashley Barnes was held in similar regard with us, but I'd have him over Andone and Locadia, neither of whom are remotely prolific enough as you saw over 2 games.

Ultimately you only lost it because your manager had made all his subs too early.  Schoolboy error, that.  Oh, and because Glenn Murray just simply puts the ball in the net.  I worry for us when he retires, we are far too dependent on him.

Anyway, best of luck this season - I hope you got up, and it's a sentiment that is shared by many on our board it seems.

What do you describe as time after time? Darren has played a weak side in every cup game he’s taken charge of with us...is that not time after time?
who was the last manager that didn’t? If that’s the level of scrutiny no manager would last the season.

Really disappointed with the result.

Like many others I thought the substitutions were just odd. As far as the kids go thought they all did well apart from Rogers who was like a rabbit in the headlights and missed a sitter but he is very young and was playing against Premier League defenders so it's not surprising he didn't make any impact, should have been Gayle that was brought on though.

Would have liked us to have fielded a stronger side but promotion is more important to the club than the cups.

What a weird game - it was almost like an England friendly. Perhaps if Jones is running the show he thought he was managing a Belgian international friendly ?

I enjoyed watching the kids get on the pitch but it almost seemed reckless to do that to that extent last night and use/ waste two subs in Dawson/ JRod? Weird - I'm beginning to wonder about Moore a bit to be honest after that. Another question lingers is whether Jones is really the one in charge and Moore is a front man? That's the way it seemed last night?

Always nice to see the view from the opposition so thanks for popping on and sharing.

Whilst its disappointing to go out last night, I think overall you guys deserved it over the 120 minutes. Murray came on and made the difference, something which Gayle may have done for us if we hadn't used all our subs so early.

I really like the look of your centre midfielder, Bassouma? He has looked tidy over the 2 games.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Now the dust has settled abit and I have had a think about it, I have tried to take the positives out of the game.

1 - The youth players are ready and can be relied upon to help out the first team, they will have took a lot of experience out of the 2 games and will have learnt a lot, which could be invaluable.
2 - The experience for Rogers will help him immensely, seemed nervy at first which is expected but had one moment where he turned the defender inside out and drove forward/
3 - Tulloch looks a real prospect.
4 - The subs were bemusing, was Rodriguez injured or being saved? Did we need to make the Dawson sub or again was he being saved. In hindsight the early subs killed us off. If we could have replaced HRK with Gayle and kept 11 on the field we may have been having a different conversation.
5 - The experiment of 3-5-2 didn't work for me and cements my opinion that we need to continue as 4-3-3.
6 - Hoolahan should be getting ALOT more game time, he is above Brunt, Morrison and all the other 'regular' subs that are made.
7 - I still think Johnstone is a better keeper than Bond.

Why so much negativity about HRK?

Thought he done a decent job tonight and received a standing ovation on Saturday.

Hopefully he’s not out for long, we’re goinh to need him with our run in

Have to agree, he played well last night, but he shouldn't be starting in the Championship first team now we have other options.

8,645 there  :o  It was indeed our lowest ever 4th round (or equivalent) crowd at the Hawthorns. Incidentally, 59,448 against Pompey in 1956 is the highest.

When’s the last time we had a crowd that low for a competitive game?

Anyone else just sick and tired of how we go out in the cup? It seems like a broken record now. Face a mediocre side at home we are capable of beating, we score, they score, then they score another one in the second half and we can't equalise. Repeat next season and go out hopelessly early.

define “hopelessly early”? Round of 32 isn’t terrible out of 737 teams.

Normally under previous regimes thats fringe players / bomb squad , in fairness Moore has played kids in both cups in every game .
I agree on the going out softly but these kids will have gained far , far more from Cup games than the odd under 23 game.

For what it is worth I thought we played well.  Harper, Tulloch, Field all with great performances, Bond again solid in goal.  Some strange substitutions I will grant you- Dawson (a sub already) for Hegazi?  However, I am pleased he used the youngsters, I enjoyed watching them, their effort was first class, and I think we would have one if it wasn't for a colossal cock up in defence to make it 1-1.  Sorry but given we still have hopes of automatic promotion, or approach to this match was spot on.  We may even have risked too much if Dawson is injured alongside HRK- who had a good game IMO.

You can't have ever kicked a ball in anger if you think he should have anticipated a 20 yard bounce on a first touch of a professional footballer.
Dawson knew straight away he couldn't get to the ball first in a one on one foot race, so he tried to block the guy's run and ended up on all fours - not really his fault he got put in that situation

On the 3 at the back business, I can't be the only one to have noticed that although we are much better away as 433, our home form has pretty well tanked since the switch.  Maybe we should be 3 at the back at home.

Not Dawson's fault at all he and everyone else should be taking for granted Bartley controlling that ball. You have to trust the players you play with. Shocking from Bartley, added to the penalty he should've conceded at the Amex. Contrary to what some people say "he's better now he's in a four", he's just the same as he always was, poor.

I agree with all of this. The young blood looks promising. Substitution choices and timing however were what cost us the match. That and the fact that they should have been down to ten men.

Disappointed to head out in the fashion that we did.

I thought the young lads acquitted themselves very well - Field and Harper looked knackered throughout extra time. The lad Tulloch looks a breath of fresh air and seemed a bit more developed than Leko. I thought Rogers struggled to get to grips with the game and missed a good opportunity.

I thought the first half was relatively even - the second half was OK going forwards but struggled defensively when we moved to the three at the back.

Some of the goals we gave away was poor - I will forgive the third as we were dead on our feet and it took a horrible deflection from Field who could not get out quick enough. The first goal I want to see again but the initial error was appalling.

I do not - and still do not - understand the substitutions - in particular if Rodriguez and Dawson was just being rested. Almost seemed like we were treating the match as a training excerise and was not bothered about progressing.

I don't know what our plan was last night at all, none of it makes any sense from the original team selection, to substitutions, to change of shape to taking off a player we had brought on. It just looks a mess. It's absolutely obvious that despite what Darren Moore says we really didn't care less whether we went through or nor not. Even so it was still strange, no Leko, no Edwards .....??????

At least Field and Harper both looked comfortable on the same stage as Premier League opponents, that's a positive. Tulloch and Rogers it was clear to see are nowhere near that level yet but the experience will do them good.

I thought the other big problem was the lack of pace in the forward areas - Hoolahan, HRK, Rodriguez, Field and Harper are far too static.

Often easy to defend against because not one of them is capable of picking up possession and carry the ball 20/30 yards.

A lot of our play was neat possession with no penetration. Having an Edwards or a Leko might have given us the option to play in behind. Or at least have someone run at their full backs!

Question is have we ever had a lower gate for an FA Cup tie?

To think the FA Cup used to be at least as big as the league and a massive occasion with huge expectation and often bigger crowds than league games.

Hoolahan is neat and tidy but he doesn't hurt the opposition. He's not going to bully anyone, he's got no legs to get away from anyone. Playing him in the number nine role, false or otherwise is a waste of time. HRK isn't a goalscorer of any note. All night last night I was thinking where the hell is a goal going to come from? Pretty play at times, yes, but not hurting Brighton at all. Same in the Caribao Cup ties. Without Rodriguez, Gayle and Barnes we seriously struggle in forward areas.

Bitter defeat to take

1. We have some really promising kids, a real advert for them on National TV
2. Bartley is horrendous
3. Brighton should have been down to 10 men and over 90 minutes that would have taken its toll
4. I wish HRK could hit a football consistently as he has excellent work rate
5. Wrong subs made but I don't totally blame DM for the loss, the ref played their part (I think there is a bit of an agenda with some Albion fans to just dislike whatever Moore does. Even if they don't know it)

Rogers definitely did, but Tulloch put himself about a bit and got away one decent shot on target.
Not saying he's anywhere near a start but, if chasing a game, I'd rather him come on than the likes of Brunt, Hoolahan, Mears, Field, HRK, Leko etc as they offer little goal threat.
Bear in mind we only have 2 strikers as it is and they both start if fit.

I can only imagine as the ball got close to him he panicked between clearing it and taking it down, in the end he did neither and gifted them a goal.

None of that goal is Dawson's fault, if anything he tried to take the striker down to stop the chance of the goal.

Chuck in Livermore playing for almost dead on an hour and you have a pre programmed game plan regardless of score or match situation , absolutely no flexibility for something like HRK's injury ! None of this may have mattered though if the officials had done their job and sent the fella off for the blatant elbow! Just can't see ANY justification for not !

Would mean one of the other loanees couldn't play. Reverting to a 3 is a disaster imo because if it happens it happens with Bartley and rules out one of the attacking loans because we would need Tosin on the bench.

Watched him when he came on as sub for England when they played at Walsall during the summer. He looked decent in his age bracket back but lacked that little something. Last night against grown men I'd say he's come on a lot since then.

Obviously needs to get his knocks in and toughen up but he's sharp and has good movement. Nowhere near the starting eleven in the league for me but I like the look of him and would have no qualms about him coming on sparingly as a sub' when opponents begin to tire.

First time I've seen Rogers. Whatever anyone thinks of his performance last night getting real game time into his legs against experienced pros (regardless of how often they've started this season) will have done him the world of good.

a day on my views haven't really changed:
1) their lad should have been sent off which probably would have put the game in our favour even if we did persist with the youth.
2) wasted opportunity as over both games with a few more "senior" players we could have seen them off and be looking at a winnable home draw in 5th round.
3) subs my big dave were obviously pre meditated, however the rodriguez sub stunk as he should have given gayle 30 mins + extra time. rather than bringing dawson on.
4) harper impressed again- if we stay at this level he could well be starting every game next year thus we need to sort his contract.
5) field played well put his body on the line and generally is a tidy player and did show case some very good passing.
6) Tulloch showed flashes of something- he probably should have gone out on loan to a conference side if not league 2 this window. Rogers got into some good positions he did miss a sitter but hes 16 and will have learned a lot from playing.
7) 3 at back doesn't work stop trying it please.
8) mears and townsend look capable understudies and not much else. hoolahan is worth a spot on the bench and might well be worth a go in a free role off rodriguez and gayle.
9) bond I don't think is that far behind johnstone-probably only price tag that keeps sam johnstone ahead in pecking order.
10) us going down to 10 men killed us off as even with the team we had out I still thought we had a chance to knick it.

He doesn't label them, it's just a generic term. So the mistakes you're talking about may not be the mistakes Moore is alluding to.

Everyone bangs on about Brunt, but its obvious Moore is happy with his performances or he wouldn't keep playing him. Similar to my thoughts on Kanu for the last 3 weeks and Livermore throughout his career.
