Think for the third game running I think we should keep the same team. HRK has been doing ok in the wing forward role. Morrison has been steady without being spectacular but is finding his form. Matt Phillips has been immense in his new role.

Pressure off for this game as we won v Ipswich would take a point here and now to keep the momentum going. Obviously another 3 points would really set down a marker.

Yep, no need to make changes. The only change I'd consider is Barry for Morrison not because Mozza has done anything wrong but because it's a tougher away game and Swansea are sure to have a fair bit of possession and the more defensively solid Barry might be the better option of the two. 50 / 50 how I'd make that call. Other than that, unchanged.

After the hammering Norwich gave them today they might be feeling a little stung. Hopefully we can continue on from our last 2games.

Their defeat today could go either way hopefully it demoralises them and we can get another three points, it’s so close at the top , and that’s not including seals and bluenoses who will have a part play

To keep it close at the top we really need to go and get three points here.We could be eight points behind Norwich come Weds if they win their game away at Hull on Tuesday night and that will be a big gap starting to open up.

With two matches in four days next week I've decided I'd rest Morrison for this game Gaz Baz getting the nod. Other than that, unchanged.

                                      Johnstone

Adarabioyo            Dawson             Hegazi               Gibbs

                    Phillips         Livermore          Barry

Robson-Kanu                    Rodriguez                        Barnes

Subs: Myhill, Mears, Townsend, Morrison, Harper, Gayle, Burke.

There are a few sub plots here

Tosin, very well thought of at citeh...but as a Cb , clearly playing "for us" at Rb but not great at Ipswich
Do we put mears in, from memory he struggled because he was asked to play RWB but maybe at Rb ?

I think Morrison has been good, but does he need a rest?,would he be happy?

Then the biggie
HRK has played well, Jarrod hasn't (but scored) Barnes looked a little tired (but scored) and Gayle wants to get in
Which  3 ?

Finally, we sign sakho, we wait...he played well...we don't see him...I want him at least on the bench but I'd be tempted with

Sakho.               HRK
             Gayle.
Title: Re: Team

I would leave the team well alone to start with, but sub earlier than we normally do (half time or before even).
This shows our team of the last few games, that they are being rewarded by playing. Letting them have a rest and refreshed for the upcoming matches.
It also then brings on fresh legs and asks them to show why THEY should be considered.

It's possible Barnes hadn't trained much during the international break due to that foot injury that caused him to pull out of the U21 squad - can't imagine he would have pulled out unless it was genuine. Friday to Wednesday is a decent gap between games. Can't see how we can leave him out if he's fully fit.
Title: Re: Team
Post by: beechyboy90 on November 26, 2018, 10:36:18 PM
I would leave the team as it is. It's hard to change a winning team. There are issues as mentioned above.

1) despite playing well tosin is clearly not a right back and we might have problems against better teams in that area. I would have him in centre and Dawson out at full back rather than play Mears.
2) Morrison has been very good since coming into the team and we definitely don't want to burn him out. However I think resting him in a home game gives us the option to play Sam field and allow Morrison to be fresh for the derby.
3) j rod didn't play well and besides the Leeds game has been woefully off form. Gayle should be coming on with 30 mins to go for him not HRK and looking uncomfortable out of position.

For me team would be same as I said above Dawson and tosin switching roles would be the only change I would look at making from the off.

However with the games coming thick and fast we need to utilise the subs. Bringing Barry on for Morrison with 20/25 mins to go.
Gibbs and Phillips are the other ones I would be worried about as both have questionable fitness records.

I'd just swop Gayle for Jrod who hasn't seemed to be firing on all cylinders of late.

The longer it goes at 0-0 the more vulnerable we appear to be, especially away (Boro, Wigan, Hull), but, they were so pedestrian for Norwich's early goals on Saturday, we have to go at them from the off. Get an early goal and i only see one winner.
4 at the back, Gayle in for J-rod with Sako on the bench.
1-3 and, sadly, Potter staring down the barrel.

Cant see us keeping a clean sheet, so we will have to score at least 2 to win the game.

I think if we grab an early goal (think I saw a stat that we haven't scored a goal in the first 15 minutes of games) then can really see Swansea being rattled.

As setee said, the longer it goes 0-0, the more they will fancy it.

Would I take a draw? Probably wouldn't be the end of the world.

A win would really set a tone and get us right back on track for the top 2.

Can see DM starting the same 11 as the last couple of games.

If there were any changes I imagine it would be giving Mozza a rest for Brunt/Barry (I would have Barry).

And potentially starting Gayle, but cant see him taking JRod out the team, meaning HRK would be reverted back to the sub role. (Personally I would start Gayle of Jay for this one).
Title: Re: Team
Post by: Albionic on November 27, 2018, 09:55:00 AM
Leave it alone, bench is strong, we should use it.

If (and its a BIG if) I was to make one change it would be to drop JRod for Gayle.

As for Tosin, he is learning the role and doing ok, 1 mistake shouldn't result in moving him.
Title: Re: Team
Post by: Atomic on November 27, 2018, 10:01:24 AM
Gayle won't play the role in a 4-3-3 as well as J Rod does. J Rod has intelligent movement and can come deep and influence the game.

Gayle can do a job but I'd rather have him on the bench, it's not as if we're impotent without him (six goals in two games) and he's a huge weapon to have on the bench.

As you say, a draw not a bad result but, looking at tonight's games, even a win may only keep us in contention with the top 2, unfortunately.

Have to be going for it as others have said. If leeds, norwich and boro all win tonight there will be a gap to that top 3 so its our responsibility to keep in touching distance. That said, im optimistic at least 1 will choke tonight (They all have winnable fixtures truth be told, Hull are in big trouble- Norwich Win, preston are missing their top scorer- Boro win, and i feel leeds might bottle it tonight so i fancy a draw there). As for ourselves, i think an entertaining 2-2 draw, which means we have to show up in both our home fixtures next!

If we persist with 433 HRK has to play as a left footer purely for balance, also Rodriguez is awful out wide. I'd also go for Gayle in Rodriguez out.

Got a sneaky feeling we might go back to a 3 though. With Bartley coming in for Tosin and Gayle coming in for HRK with Phillips back RWB.

We should be beating them. Really poor side now, lost any quality in the summer and they are threadbare now

Is Sako left footed? Not sure if he’s fit but maybe drop HRK for Sako & Gayle in for JRod, big risk dropping both & playing 2 guys who haven’t played with each other before.

Sako is left footed. Frankly the little I've seen of him I haven't been all that impressed and I wouldn't put him in the team ahead of HRK at the moment. Moore does have to make a choice between Gayle and Rodriguez at Centre Forward there is only room for one in the team. This may have always been the case.

Whilst I was impressed with Sako's debut, I agree that HRK should retain his place and that the only change which should be considered is Gayle for Rodriguez. Personally, I would bring Gayle in but would not argue if the same side is retained.
Sako should definitely be on the bench though.

I'd go for the same team with maybe Barry in for Mozza as mentioned up thread.

Is Gayle fully fit? I dont want to start with him and him to be coming back too early. Certainly have him and Sako on the bench as options if we need them.

Same team because they won. But bench needs utilising. Barry on for Morrison with 25/20 left if we're winning to help control game. Be looking at getting Gibbs off too if we're in a good position can't have him getting burnt out. Same could be argued for Matt Phillips
Title: Re: Pre Match Chat
Post by: Oldbury24 on November 28, 2018, 05:12:27 PM
Same team deserves to start again - the Ipswich performance didn't hit the heights of the Leeds game but we still looked solid and created chances.  Although JRod is only finishing 1 in 3 chances, whilst he takes that one and we win you need to stick with him.  Plus, how must it feel to be a Championship defender seeing Gayle and Sako warming up?

Disaster waiting to happen at the back again. Forget what you think about them at the top level, but does anyone seriously believe a defence comtainig Hegazi, Dawson and Gibbs shouldn’t be looking capable and commanding at this level more often?

This is poor, we're definitely not playing 433 but it's also not a 352, just looks a mess. This "don't change a winning team" nonsense isn't helping, the front 3 have done nothing and the best striker in the league is sitting on the bench.
Title: Re: In Game Chat
Post by: Oldbury24 on November 28, 2018, 08:29:26 PM
This is truly awful.

Gayle has to be starting every game when fit, I don’t care who he replaces, any of the front three who have all been shocking thus far.

Neutral view not so bad.....bbc

Swansea and West Brom were always likely to serve up an entertaining encounter, and so it has proved.

The hosts are passing the ball around crisply and have created several good chances already, while the Baggies look threatening when they break.

Nothing has been changed Tosin is RB with Gibbs LB; 2 centre backs; Livermore, Morrison and Phillips in midfield. Barnes wide left HRK wide right and Rodriguez up front.

It's worth remembering that games come thick and fast in the championship and players and teams are not going to be 100% at it every single game. 5% off your game makes a difference and if there are four or five players 5% off the difference can be huge to a team.

In this league you have to grind out results when not at your best. We're not going to stroll through every game.

I understand that, however we’ve played 18 games and probably played well twice, possibly three times. We’ve looked solid at the back about the same number of games.

Still, we may just get through again but it doesn’t bode well long term!

Lucky to be 2-1 up. Swansea have put together the better attacks and only some great tackling by Tosin and Daws have stopped Swansea scoring more.
Still more goals in this one. We need to start controlling the game better from midfield.

We also still have Gayle to come off bench.

I question the use of them though, Mears is league 2 standard at best, literally signed because his friend is manager - straight out of last century lower league stuff. Hoolahan and Sako have done nothing, were they really required? Could Burke not have been used for the few minutes they've played?

Wasting what little money we have. 3 past it players with no future.

Gritty, Pulis-esque performance but most importantly 3 points vs a tough side!

I thought the midfield were poor defensively at times, especially in the first half - but the back 4 were excellent throughout and got us the win in the end.
People are still moaning about Kanu but I thought he did really well again, winning lots of set-pieces and causing problems for their defense on a night with little support.
Overall I'm very happy with it, it wasn't a classic but we showed good strength where earlier in the season we would have conceded.

Won despite losing the momentum and fluency we had in the Leeds performance. Swansea
nice build up play but powder puff finishing.
Was going to say Tosin Man of the match until they brought sub on who went past him every time. Still think Tosin has improved alot and got some great last ditch tackles in first half. Also Daws looks alot more comfortable in new formation. HRK is on because he gives defenders a hard physical battle. What he lacks in skill he makes up for in effort, but still think Gayle the better all round player.
Still, more than happy with the 3 points.

A case of job done. Not spectacular but we had the lead through the set pieces. Our pattern seems to be to ramp it up during the second half. We had a good spell with Barnes hitting the post with the curler then a half decent shooting chance for Morrison....but the fact we had the lead meant we didn't ramp up to top gear. Job done, move on.
Title: Re: After Match Debate
Post by: Dan on November 28, 2018, 10:00:13 PM
Still not a convincing side, and you suspect probably not good enough for automatic promotion, but the defence has improved which has improved our resilience no end. Before we used to look pretty easy to beat, we would just get our jail based on Gayle and Barnes. Since the change to 4 in defence the side looks somewhat more capable of grinding out results. Important to keep this run going now, Brentford are in horrible form but a decent side. Hopefully we don't take that one for granted.

Gayle also needs to be starting. Leeds was good and all that but Gayle is the best striker in the division.

Very poor going forward I thought Barnes was attrocious. We looked tired and lacking pace, would have liked to see Burke on the bench as an option.
Defensively we were ok Johnstone should have done so much better with the shot leading to the Swansea goal.
The games come thick and fast and whilst we have won 3 on the trot sometimes the odd change or tweak wouldn't go amiss

Burke or sako some other option. Barnes is a luxury he has that odemwingie match winning skill though (even if he is annoymous for 85 minutes) but today he looked jaded.

At home when he gets service he can be unplayable away from home without the same level of service he isn't the same threat.

With regard to the game I thought we looked pretty comfortable all game with the exception of the goal conceded. Had a few hairy moments when montero came on he had young tosin on toast but just lacked end product. Better opposition will exploit that hopefully it isn't bolasie....

We won at a canter never really left second gear. 3 points on the road 6/6 from away. Back in touching distance with the pack. Wish Darren would use his subs and freshen things up. Thought Jrod or Barnes could have been hooked a lot earlier

Most worrying this from last night was the bench. Only Gayle  , who IMO should be starting was likely to have any major effect on the game,  Swansea had the likes of Bony and Montero. Do we really need Brunt, Barry , Hoolahan and Harper all on the bench in the same game.?

Not pretty but for those who mention our powder puff attack, I think we are doing Swansea a disservice as they defended quite well and matched our midfield at times. For me special mention has to go to Hegazi and Tosin who I though were immense last night. I thought our passing was very good as well, pinging it about like a training session, we have had games this season where we couldnt pass for toffee.......

A solid performance from all concerned - thanks Darren!

Read the in game chat and all I can say is what a bunch of whingers Albion fans have turned into many are beginning to sound like the arrogant mob from down the road very sad.

I did exactly the same KYA and I wondered if we watched the same game. One said our defence was non existant - I thought we were very good defensively yesterday. Other comments just beggar belief. Thats why I dont pay any attention to the in game section on this forum as it is used by some to just have a pop at our team.

Blimey some us sound like we've been taking lessons from Craig Revel Horwood.

We won. Again. Darlings. Next.

I thought it was a solid performance but I did only catch the 2nd half.

I thought we knocked it about quite nicely, defended well and attacked ok but we do miss Gayle even though HRK has done well for me the last 3 games.

By no means our best performance but did it comfortably enough. Nice to see us take advantage of set pieces glad that's not something we've lost. Morrison and Phillips excellent and the back 4 all played well. Everyone else not great tbh though HRK put himself about.

Onto the next.

Really?

+1. It is becoming embarrassing some of the comments I have read. We have a manager who is Albion through and through, 3 points of top and playing attractive football. Yet people moan still.
