;D First match of a big week of 3 games in 7 days. Tough game we should get something from..the next 2 probably our sternest test.
Think "fringe" players like Field,Hoolohan,Harper and Edwards may be involved at some stage for a run-out.
Hopefully Bako will also be used. He would have a good understanding with Gayle from Palace days...exciting times at the Albion ;D

Unless they released more tickets since Sunday then I think it's sold out mate as I had a look. Hull is also sold out as I bought the last ticket (again, unless they released any more blocks since), which is not even on this board yet as a placeholder

With regard to Hull, only tickets for N6 & N7 have gone on sale so far, there's still Blocks NE and E1-3 to go, so should be plenty of tickets for those wishing to make the trip.

As you said biggest test for us so far the next run of games. If we can continue our decent form over this run I won't doubt our ability to be there or there abouts come may.

Also agree we will need to utilise the squad to the full. Hope Phillips is back and we have Sako ready for the bench.

Think the formation away needs tweeking. 2 up top and Barnes we don't half get overrun in the middle. Be tempted to drop Rodriguez for Morrison or hoolahan and have an extra body in the middle for this game.

Wigan point of view didn't Powell go off Injured last game?

As before the majority of away games I would take a point.
Title: Team
Post by: beechyboy90 on October 10, 2018, 06:41:27 AM
I dont expect big Dave to deviate what he has done so far. I expect;

Johnstone
Dawson hegazi Bartley
Phillips (if fit) Barry Livermore gibbs
Barnes
Rodriguez Gayle

However I would have Rodriguez out for either hoolahan or Morrison and try control the midfield and the game.

Hopefully we see Sako on bench too

That's the side I'd start with. I'd also be tempted to bulk out the midfield away from home. I'd be looking to bring Brunt on for Barry with 30 minutes to go too as I thought he played well as an impact sub against Reading.

If Phillips isn't fit I'd go with Edwards as RWB rather than Mears.

Subs I'd have Myhill, Adabarioyo, Field, Brunt, Edwards,Hoolihan/Rodriguez, Sako

Yeah I saw :) ended up getting another couple of tickets for linked STH friends when they opened up the next block - Bit of a pain as i'm now in a different block with my ticket, but I think we'll have a good day up there.

No idea about parking Liver'. But if you're anywhere near Liverpool Lime Street it's currently only £8.60 for an off peak day return on the train. Could be worth letting the train take the strain.

Free parking in Wigan town centre on Saturdays not sure if it's just for local residents though.

https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Docs/PDF/Resident/Parking-Roads-Travel/Wigan-Car-Park-Map.pdf

I've had a response from Wigan Council and parking is free for anyone in any council run car park on Saturdays. Any of the car parks in the link above will be free to park in.

Would take a draw but think we can beat them. Agree with a lot of posters that we need to consider changing things away from home, with maybe Hoolahan for JRod, but if not I still go into every game believing we can win. What a difference 6 months make :)
If we win the next 3 we will cement our place as favourites for automatic.

14 of Wigans 17 points have come at home, which is impressive, however, their current form is best described as average,
I suspect they will be wary of going too Gung ho at us,

so, I expect first half will be dour which DM will stick with for about 60 mins then as they tire we will open up and blow them away

IMO The forwards we have on the pitch need the ball played to their feet not the chest.

Haha, complete joke. Brunt is awful at centre mid, it’s common knowledge unless you’re Darren Moore, both he and Livermore are booked and walking a tightrope, yet he leaves both of them on after they’ve been overrun yet again for the whole of the second half. Surprise, surprise Livermore ends up getting sent off.

We might be third, but to repeat, we've won games in spite of Moore's team selections and tactics, not because of them.

Reactive management, illogical substitutions, clear favourites (mainly those players who are oldest or happen to have been around the longest), unable to recognise or make attempts to deal with our weaknesses (central midfield, as was clear before the season even started).

Not impressed at all.

Without being consistently bailed out by Gayle and Barnes (worryingly both of whom are on loan), we'd be languishing in the bottom half.

The only silver lining to come out of that is that we won’t have to watch the Brunt / Livermore partnership against derby, if he doesn’t play field Wednesday I give up as that was p### poor today.

Poor poor poor.

Another disappointing game, especially after Leeds falling too, was a great chance to stretch a lead at the top.

Not quite sure how I feel right now.

We only did well at the beginning of 1st half, after that we were poor.
Conceded soft goals at the back again and the front players also didn't play well today.
Moore should make changes earlier in my opinion.

Pretty much my mentality with it to be fair, Weird season that's been our loan players making the difference for us. Our ancient players still play while the younger ones can't get on the bench let alone play a game.

I'm think I'm only the 4th Baggies fan at school Which is mostly dominated by Wolves Fans and Walsall Fans and a few Villa fans

One major problem i find (and you get it a lot more with brunt) is that when the midfielder comes short to pick the ball up from defence its so rare they actually turn and play regardless of if they have a man pressing or not. they just give it straight back to a defender and its infuriating.

I even saw Bartley kick off at Brunt because he received the ball and sent it straight back even though he had the time and space to turn, and we could all see the next pass was available. I saw this happen a few times today and many times previously. Maybe there needs to be more communication but a half decent midfielder should be aware of any pressure on him before receiving a ball.

overall a poor performance, need to pick it up for midweek quickly. Would be good to see some different faces around the squad.

No one covered themselves in glory but that was as cynical a performance as I've seen from anyone by Wigan today. As stated you come away slightly pleased with sending off but not much else. Barnes squandered our best moments through lack of composure and or vision but we certainly deserved a point.

Why no Morrison sako or Phillips when we’re constantly being told there all fit

Well that doesn't help the manager. But if the personnel aren't fit why stick to a formation that requires Phillips to be even slightly workable?

Formation away from home we get overrun as erm are carrying the 3 frontmen hoping one of them will be a game winner. Think we need to drop Rodriguez be it for another cm like field or for another ball player like hoolahan.

Poor line up and tactics by manager and also terrible subs that didn't really alter how we play. This was a carbon copy of most of our away games- a defeat has been coming for a while.

Positives are we will see a different midfield axis but I am dreadIng  brunt Barry axis or Morrison Barry. Hope field doesn't get overlooked. Other positive is we only lost 1-0 gd may well be important come may.

All about opinions thought Rodriguez was anonymous again and we'd have benefited by sacrificing him for a proper midfielder, in this case Hoolahan.

Performance wise, at least half of our games have been "bad days at the office" this season, but we've been lucky to be bailed out by the quality of Barnes and Gayle. In the long-term, we can't always afford to rely on them if we're serious about automatic promotion. That's why it's not good enough - this is one of the few away games this season where the result has reflected the performance.

Exactly. Ok so long term issues still exist - the midfield is still slow to get forward and to recover,  so the defence who do not seem to know anything about each other get left isolated and vulnerable to anyone who can run at them. But we have not yet lost many games and the ones we have lost are usually by the only goal. There will always be games like this, unbeaten runs come to an end so move on and get better next time.  I think we all feel that some of the younger players deserve a chance, and that team selections and tactics might be more obviously game changing, but so far I am very happy with what this club is putting in front of us supporters.

Probably our worst performance of the season, in all the other losses and draws, we've at least posed an attacking threat, whereas today we offered very little, whilst keeping our leaky defence.

Hopefully it's a blip; thankfully we haven't played like this at all this season as we've always had creativity.

What a waste of £60.

I can take having 'off' days in the Championship but how many away games have we seen such inept performances from players and staff this season?

Problems? The system isn't working away from home. We're not getting our strikers in the game. Teams that play 442 and press have caused us all sorts of problems.

Mears is a very, very poor player at this level. If the management cannot see this, then I am utterly bemused. Can anybody name a 35 year wing back? I can't think of many as the position requires fitness levels and positional sense of the highest order.

My biggest gripe is how 'reactive' Moore is. Only when he is forced to will he make changes to try and change the game. Taking Gayle off was absolutely farcical. You're 1-0 down and you take off our out and out goal scorer? I thought Rodriguez was woeful and if a striker should have been taken off, it should have been him.

I understand your point, but at least in the games you've mentioned we attacked well and scored goals, whereas today we lacked any attack. Against Forest and Birmingham we hit the bar at 1-1 as well so could have potentially won those games, which shows how creative we can be. For the record, we could, and possibly should have lost those games had they taken their chances.

However, my point is you can't really compare today to those performances - as today was far worse. For all our dodgy defending and naive play at times, we've always looked dangerous this season, whereas today we were completely flat.

As said by others, hopefully it was just a bad day attacking wise.

Another away performance that was uninspiring. This has been the case all season. We've lost to Wigan Athletic and Middlesbrough and really should've lost at Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City. We've had our fair share of luck this season and we've been rescued by the quality of a couple of individuals namely Harvey Barnes and Matty Phillips. At home we've pretty much deserved the points we've accumulated although we could've been three down to Bristol City before the aforementioned Barnes took over the show.

We have individuals that are better than other clubs in this league. Ahmed Hegazi, Craig Dawson, Phillips, Kieron Gibbs, Jake Livermore, Gareth Barry, Chris Brunt and Barnes are all players that have Premier League quality whilst Dwight Gayle is top Championship quality. These players have played in most games this season and it's the quality of those individuals that have got us results and not the quality of the team.

We are disjointed, a group of individuals rather than a team. If this continues we will not finish in the top two. Because of the quality of our individuals we will be around the top six for sure providing they all remain fit and we don't lose them for periods of time or in the transfer window.

The midfield is the biggest problem. Defensively we've struggled but a lot of that is to do with the middle of the park there is no solid base in front of the back three. It's been said all season and it is perfectly true, Chris Brunt is a very good footballer but he is not a central midfielder it is not in his nature to play there and he doesn't have the attributes to consistently play that position. Gareth Barry does have the attributes and we've looked better with him in the middle rather than Brunty but Barry is 37 years old, he doesn't have the legs. He can and will do a decent job in midfield but you cannot expect it all the time in the Championship at his age. Barry should be an option to play in midfield as should Sam Field and for me it's the biggest issue of the season that Field is not getting a look in. This is Darren Moore's biggest issue and biggest failing. Livermore has too much on his shoulders at times and at times it is affecting him. We are fine in wide areas with Gibbs and Phillips and Conor Townsend is a player we can get by with for a few games if Gibbs is absent. Everyone knows we need cover for Phillips, the club included, I'm certain this will be addressed in January.

Going forward we've scored goals for fun but there have been games where we've needed another option and haven't had it. We rely far too much on Barnes and Gayle. Jay Rodriguez has offered very little all season from open play and at times has been totally anonymous. When the guile and craft of Barnes is nullified we offer little threat. We could do with a "Mitrovic type" option at times, which we don't have at the club and there are times also, particularly late on in games where we've been holding a lead where we've been crying out for some real pace up front to give the opposition a problem rather than just inviting endless pressure like we did at home to Stoke for the last fifteen minutes or so. There will be more occasions as the season progresses where we're in a similar position. Oliver Burke and Bakary Sako are potential options as the season progresses.
Some of the weight needs lifting off Barnes's shoulders. James Morrison and Wes Hoolahan don't have the same qualities that Barnes has but they do offer a kind of creative threat that we may need to exploit more.

At the back, given the way we're playing and given the fact that we do not have a solid platform in front of them we're not actually doing that badly. We are conceding too many goals overall but this isn't just a reflection of the back three. Hegazi gets criticism which for me is not only ridiculous, it's plain baffling at times. Not only is his defending vastly under-rated particularly one on one, he is also by far the best of our three on the ball. The way we play doesn't really play to Dawson's strengths. Daws is at home in a deep lying defensive unit where his main job is to head the ball away, put in tackles and blocks and basically be a rock. He is excellent at that. His game isn't really suited to playing expansive football where he is expected to play on the ball BUT he is good enough to get away with it at Championship level. Kyle Bartley is the clear weak link in the back three. He is not particularly comfortable on the ball and his idea of marking is to wrap his arms round strikers or tug their shirts. We have been lucky not to have conceded more penalties than we have this season. We could do with an upgrade here.

Moving forward Darren Moore's biggest priorities are:

a) Sorting out the midfield. Field and Barry need to be the option alongside Livermore. Brunt cannot start games in the centre of midfield.

b) Finding other options up front when Barnes is nullified. Stop Barnes and you stop us creating. We then rely on moments of individualism, usually from Phillips.

c) Find a decent back up for Phillips in January.

d) Either get more out of Rodriguez in terms of his positive influence in open play over ninety minutes or find another alternative.

e) Find a left sided centre back that is better than Bartley.

Bang on the money for me that.
We have been lucky think of the penalties missed against us. How we got those 2 late goals at hilsborough still baffles me.

Brunt needs to play wide left so probably has to be on the bench unless we change system. Rodriguez has scored penalties and a couple from open play but has been largely disappointing (in contrast to last year especially).

If Phillips isn't fit and big dave don't want to play Edwards we should go back to a flat 4 at the back rather than persisting with mears.

Correct stop Barnes and Phillips you stop wba. Barnes has been expected to do it all whilst Phillips has been absent. Gayle is a goal scorer and match winner but will be absent for large periods of the game. You can't have him and Rodriguez both being quiet.

Darren Moore needs to utilise his squad better in particular use of sam field, Oliver Burke could be used to stretch the defences late on rather than playing HRK. I think hoolahan has been unlucky not to get game time. Moore has been too stubborn with his team and subs hopefully today was a wake up call and he learned from it.

Casual in possession, weak in the challenge and out of position on several occasions.

As for the goal Hegazi could/should have done better.

Then again he wouldn't have found himself in bother had Tosin acquitted himself better in the first instance.

However, I thought Livermore's second yellow was a bit harsh given the general leeway extended to Wigan throughout.

Very niggly team that's very much in the mould of their manager when he was player.

Capable of some really good football and 'blessed' with a working knowledge of the darker side of the game.

Disappointing especially as I don't think Wigan are anything special. Can't say I'd want any of their players, but their manager has got them scrapping for every ball (sometimes too literally!).
Think we really missed Phillips who can offer so much more threat right side. However, we had difficulty creating chances for the forwards. Brunt can pick a dangerous through  pass, but hasn't the legs to dribble the ball forwards. Livermore has his limitations but does important work closing off gaps in front of the defence. Maybe Field should be given a chance v Derby, but still not convinced what he offers going forward.

Tosin left me less than impressed to be honest.

Casual in possession, weak in the challenge and out of position on several occasions.

As for the goal Hegazi could/should have done better.

Then again he wouldn't have found himself in bother had Tosin acquitted himself better in the first instance.

Having watched highlights of the game I agree Tosin should have done better with his challenge for the header (that led to the goal) but other than that I thought he did okay when he came on, looking to get us forward quickly, I can only really remember him being caught out of position once when he was slow to get back.

Not sure what Hegazi was trying to do he just seemed to stop to allow Windass to pick his spot (I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose but that's what it looks like), it was the same lack of defending that he showed at home against Bristol City when they scored their 2nd.

Again, having seen the highlights, I think Livermore was unlucky to get a second booking for the challenge on Windass who is clearly making more out of it to try and get Livermore booked, the way he motions to the ref and Livermore it's obvious what he is doing. At the time it looked like a booking.

I thought all 3 defenders had a hand in conceding that.  I mean, with 3 CH's you shouldn't be conceding a long ball from the keeper for a start.  Tosin should have done better with the header, Hegazi did the right thing dropping back when he realising he wouldn't get there, but Bartley should have been dropping to help Hegazi out rather than watch him in a 1v1.  Hegazi should also have done better there.

Really rate their boss, think he will go on to be a good manager. Personally I prefer him to Dean Smith.

First error for the goal is Adarabioyo misjudging the clearance and getting caught underneath the ball. That shouldn't be happening.

Second error (and the most crucial) is Mears not reading the situation and not following his runner. There was no other danger, Mears has to track that run.

Hegazi then is left in the proverbial. Either he goes for the challenge which is 40-60 and risk a foul and very possibly a red card or he drops off and at least gives the attacker another obstacle. I think he does the right thing but the forward does very well and changes direction and with Hegazi having to react to the change of direction I'm not sure he could've done much more.

Looking at Sam Johnstone's positioning, I think he should be taking another step to his left. The forward is always likely to shoot into the keeper's left corner from there given the direction he's running in. If the forward shoots across himself then fair play, hands up it's an outstanding finish. Could / would Johnstone have saved the shot had he been another yard to his left? Probably not, the guy hits the shot too well so although I think his positioning could've been better I don't blame Johnstone for the goal.

Blame for me lies with Adarabioyo and Mears.

Fully agree with your post Atomic.

Thought Tosin and Mears could/should have done better and dealt with the situation.

Think it highlights the need for better cover for Phillips in January.

It also shows for me we are still light in the CB position, when I have seen Tosin he doesn't strike me as someone who's going to be playing at the highest level (granted its early in his career and he is still young).

yes Mears should have tracked the run of Windass but Hegazi doesn't get anything like close enough to Windass to even make a challenge, in that respect Hegazi is as culpable for the goal as Mears and Adabarioyo, IMO they all made errors that led to the goal.

We definitely do need quality cover for Phillips but i would argue, had Moore reverted to a back 4 (Dawson/Hegazi/Bartley/Gibbs) knowing that the replacements in his squad weren't good enough to replace Phillips both offensively and defensively which is needed as a wing back, his absence would have been far less noticeable and would have meant you could play a Burke/Edwards/Leko right midfield as they would have had a solid full back behind them to cover.

I like the 3-5-2 system but it cannot be relied upon as the only way to play as especially away from home, it hasn't particularly worked as well as at home.
