Just below us.
They are at home.
Pulis will tell our players to pass the ball back towards our penalty area and then hoof, and hope one of our players may (repeat may) fortunately run onto it.
We shall invite them to hover around our penalty area ala Pulis.

Given both teams are struggling to score it wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be a 4-3 thriller.

.....I won't comment if I mean goals or shots on target.

I think it'd be a big mistake to sit back in this one and let Southampton dictate terms all day. TP probably won't do it but I'd start a 4-4-2.

GK
(Myhill/Palmer?)

Nyom/Dawson/Evans/Gibbs

Phillips/Krychowiak/Barry/Chadli

Rodriguez/Rondon

To be fair Soton play a lot like Leicester and us (to a lesser degree) by sitting back and trying to hit on the counter attack; they struggle when teams do the same so sitting back is arguably the best tactic in this case. To be fair it's a pretty moot point though as we will set up to play like that regardless.

We need Phillips back in and possibly McClean as we need pace in the side to be more effective on the counter, I'd play Chadli just behind the striker whether that's Rondon or Rodriguez.

I'd be tempted to go for 4:2:3:1 or 4-1-4-1

                                              Myhill
       Nyom             Dawson                       Evans              Gibbs

         Phillips                                                                     McClean

                                            Chadli
                                                            Rondon

Subs: Palmer, McAuley, Hegazi, Yacob, Livermore, Brunt, Rodriguez.

If Myhill's out, he'll have to play Palmer.

Would this be an EPL debut for Palmer?

Sorry, I don't know much about him.

Yes it would be his EPl debut, he is very inexperienced and has only played first team football on loan at Kidderminster Harriers in the National league where he played 11 times.

I agree with the sentiment but his lack of experience is a worry, I'd be less worried if he had played in either league 1 or 2, but 11 games isn't a huge amount of experience.
I'd like him to get more game experience in the lower leagues rather than risking him in a Pl clash where we really need at least a point, but he might well play a blinder and turn out to be the next Jordan Pickford!
If Myhill and Foster are injured we don't really have an option though!

Hopefully one of the keepers make it, think this could be a standard too high for the youngster with not much experience. Southampton will be a tough game. They are a very good team with a lot of talented players such as Gabbiadini, Tadic, van Dijk. A point would be a cracking result.

Think Pulis will target points from the next 2 away games seeing as we have Chelsea and Man City up next at home.
Would like to think that this means we go for wins at Saints and Huddersfield but sadly, think we will just go ultra defensive to strangle a point or nick a win with a set piece.
Understandable I suppose but uninspiring.

A win is worth 3 times the amount of points as a draw, it's a shame our manager doesn't seem to realise this. We'll grind out another bore-draw and end up with less points than if we had got a win in just one of the two games this week.

Title: Goalkeeper Situation (Southampton Game)
Post by: Dan87uk on October 19, 2017, 01:08:59 PM
Has anybody heard anything further on Myhill and Fosters injuries? The last I saw is that essentially we needed to assess them both during this week to see if either could play the game.

My own opinion on the matter is that if either of the two are not 100% ready for this weekend then we should stick young Alex Palmer between the sticks for the game and let the other two recuperate for the Man City game.

If Pulis goes to Palmer and says "You're the guy" for this week then i'm sure that will do wonders for his confidence and he'll do a good job for us, particularly after what happened against Leicester where it seemed like he didn't seem to trust him and replace Myhill.

Thoughts?

I agree with you, but I think TP will be ultra-cautious and if Myhill is, say, 85% he'll play him rather than take a chance on Palmer.
Title: Re: Goalkeeper Situation (Southampton Game)
Post by: Hull Baggie on October 19, 2017, 02:42:08 PM
Don't think trust came in to it against Leicester. Myhill obviously indicated to Pulis that he wanted to carry on so he did..end of.
if the Vardy incident had involved Foster and he didn't want to come off with Myhill being on the bench I doubt anyone would be questioning Pulis not making a substitution.

According to Physio room Myhill, Robson-Kanu and Morrison are slight doubts, Foster is a major doubt and there is no mention of Burke so maybe he's okay?

from wiki, made me loff.

In May 2015, Barnsley manager Lee Johnson revealed that he was relishing the prospect of the battle between goalkeepers Turnbull, Christian Dibble and Adam Davies, in the upcoming 2015-16 season, declaring that the best goalkeeper will be the clubs number 1.[29] On 6 July 2015, Turnbull was linked with a move to local rivals Leeds United.

I'd sooner see Palmer given a chance, rather than drag in somebody just because they've got experience.

How are players going to get experience if you don't trust them to play? If we aren't going to trust him in this situation then what is the point of him even being here? He could be world class, but we'll never know and end up releasing him to league 1/2.

From TP's interview it sounds like it could be a moot discussion anyway, I expect Boaz to be fit enough.

Could that of been a penalty?

nope, neither was.

has to be intentional for handball, both clearly were trying to move their hands away from the ball.

makes a change seeing a ref make the correct decision these days.

This is one of the local games i can attend from Dorset, so disappointed in how we play nowadays i haven't bothered going- for the first time in a long time.

Such a poor team to watch, i feel sorry for the lads who play for us being coached to play in this way, it's painful watching this week in week out.

Yeah I don't think it's actually as bad as it's made out. Every team does it. I think we're getting a reputation though and the opposition fans are always straight on Foster's back after the first time he does it which forces the ref's hand most occasions.

When fans of other teams say what is the point in West brom, days like today I really can't help but agreeing.

Southampton have been average this year and we appear to have no intention whatsoever of making them worry, just sitting deep and hoping they don't score.

Went to watch my local team macc Town today in the conference, I'm going to a start doing it more often.

We really are as dull to watch as I remembered.

3 defensive midfielders again across the middle (must be the only team in the country that does this)

Completely outplayed again. Time wasting 20 minutes in. The days of living down south and being proud to tell people i'm a West Brom fan seem like a distant memory these days

My point is, is that other squads hate to play against WBA. It frustrates the fans and players. That's Pulis's goal, nobody likes to play a frustrating match. So our tactics our entirely meant to annoy and frustrate. And what frustrates teams more than anything? Missed chances. It is intentional that we give the other team an occasional good chance so that they miss it and get frustrated. The key is not let it be too clear cut. The whole match-flow is entirely in the control of the Baggies. Don't let possession % fool you otherwise.

Flinging 10 men behind the ball in every single game doesn't make a team good at defending.

Playing a back 4 rather than a back 10 and keeping it tight/solid is what makes a team good at defending.

What Tony Pulis does isn't anything special and its mad that he sometimes gets respect/credit for it when we do happen to steal a 0-0 or 1-0

Title: Re: In Game Chat
Post by: frazzle on October 21, 2017, 07:26:49 PM
My point is, is that other squads hate to play against WBA. It frustrates the fans and players. That's Pulis's goal, nobody likes to play a frustrating match. So our tactics our entirely meant to annoy and frustrate. And what frustrates teams more than anything? Missed chances. It is intentional that we give the other team an occasional good chance so that they miss it and get frustrated. The key is not let it be too clear cut. The whole match-flow is entirely in the control of the Baggies. Don't let possession % fool you otherwise.

And with something like 2 wins in 17 the masterplan is really paying off isnt it. Thanks for educating us.

Thought we were better at 5-3-2 but awful before that. Rodriguez and Rondon were dire second half when we needed them and thought Phillips was poor when he came on as well as being ill-disciplened tactically as he abandoned the other central midfielders by standing too far wide.

I was impressed with Gibbs, Hegazi and I suppose Dawson bar the goal.

Agree, I still think he's too inconsistent for me though.

I also agree on our new signings, with Brunt in for Gibbs, Brunt was the worse of the two but excellent at set-pieces which are vital, and Yacob in for Livermore makes us harder in the middle.

Really bad performance today, could have easily been 3-0.

Post by: gingernumpty on October 21, 2017, 07:34:07 PM
The intent and desire to go win a match is just not there.  The team is setup and sent out to defend with a negative mentality.  Do we even practice attacking play and passing the ball to each other, because it certainly doesn’t look like it.   Set pieces and defending that is it.  Dont want instability but the football is so dire and the results as poor it’s getting to the point where a more positive approach is required by Tony or someone else.

Chadli was booked for a trip on one of theirs - they consistently prevented our players fro getting forward by blocking and pulling and yes even tripping but only one out of five given. Rondon may have not lost or even won the ball back had he not been shoved in the back and then blocked off and brought down. Their goal was a direct resulyt of a poor decision. However the player should have been stopped well before he got to our area - and I mean stopped!

Must be bad....

My thoughts entirely. So negative for the first hour. I actually wondered if Pulis was playing at 'rope a dope' and allowing them to tire, then he changed the formation and just for a second it looked OK, but how wrong was I? Totally bereft of any ideas past the half way line and Rondon couldn't trap a bag of sand. Even Greg was rubbish. I cannot think of one positive thing to say about that game or us.....

Absolutely no control to be seen anywhere.....time for change I think.

I honestly don't see the point of playing like that, if you give a team all of that possession, they only have to get lucky once and we have no way back.

Starting to think!

In my opinion it’s been obvious for a long time

No ive been happy for him to carry on but the last few games its become glaringly obvious its not working anymore

These would have been draws previously we are now losing them

We have two negatives.
Pulis and Megson.
Both must get on that bus they try to park at every game.

I have held my peace about Pulis because i always hated how Stoke used to play under him but now he”s our manager.  To be honest, i can put up with dross if we get some results out of it because winning is always the first priority.  But now we watch dross and we are not winning or even drawing.  Or if we are winning we keep letting teams back to draw with us when the whole point is to prevent the opposition from getting goals. So we have thrown away too many points already this season which can all be put down to the negative defensive and boring tactics of Pulis that its becoming really hard to justify his approach any more.  So now i am going to change from “i dont particularly enjoy this but the ends justify the means” to “the pulis formula is just not working any more so if pulis doesnt start doing something different pretty soon, i see  his record of avoiding relegation being in danger” The next step is “ Pulis Out” and i never say that lightly.

Pulis flatters to deceive as a premiership manager. He's got no imagination, no intelligence and, I have to say, no courage. Disappointing tactics as usual but even so some disappointing performances tonight  -Rodrigues, yet to see him have a good game, Chadli, no surprise there, Barry, his second poor game in a row, Philips, utter and complete deadloss for his short appearance, what has happened to him I wonder, Greg big reputation but no evidence so far of his match quality  and he's definitely not 90 minutes fit, Livermore a poor imitation of Yacob if you ask me. But then, different tactics could change everything! The Baggie Boys need something to cheer about!  Oh, and my advice to the owners is, don't give Pulis any money to spend (ie waste)

However the player should have been stopped well before he got to our area - and I mean stopped!
thats where the yac is so impressive in that role he would have stopped him one way or the other

I can accept setting up defensively away from home, I watched it under Hodgeson & Megson and didn't complain and I can accept it under Pulis. The one thing I absolutely cannot stand is the complete and utter lack of willingness & ambition to go and look to win the game of football.

Time wasting in the 15th minute, 1 touch in their area the first half, again the lack of quality going forward was shocking I have genuinely watched Sunday League teams pass the ball around better than we can.

The only way you can put up with this turgid, unimaginative cr*p is if it's getting results, no win in 6 now & 2 points above the drop zone having only played Arsenal isn't going to cut it. He's taken us as far as he can the only thing he's going to do now is spunk millions of pounds to still play sh*te football and finish between 13th & 17th.

Very poor first half. Looked better when Pulis changed it to 3-5-2 and Rodriguez has to score. Rondon then fouled but take nothing away from a fantastic winning goal.

Also expected much worse at final whistle from the fans but it didn't really transpire.

I am very cold and wet.

Only one person responsible for this crap and that’s Pulis.

Complertely disagree there were at least eleven others  responsible as well as Pulis. I don't include Hegazi or Dawson in this.

The system is dire the, the entertainment is even more dire and we can no longer get the clean sheets required to gain points.  Something has to change and whilst I am not a pathological hater of TP {unlike many on here} i am now really worried that even with some better players than we have had for some time, including  some younger legs on the pitch, we seem to be struggling to find a way of playing that allows the better players to play to their strengths. This is a management issue and I am far from sure that Pulis and co have the imagination or courage to be able  solve the problem. I do however hope to be proven wrong. Oh and J Rod is surely no better finisher than any of the other front men either wide or central and is worse as a lone striker than Rondon or even HRK. Need a replacment asap, if Rondon had missed any of the chances this lad has thrown away in at least three matches, the trolls on here who call themselves Albion supporters would have been baying for his blood.

Agree on a lot of points there fella.

Yacob in for Livermore all day long

Did Barry play today?? Didnt even know he was playing if im honest

Phillips should be starting ahead of Rodriguez

Its upfront  where we are at a loss, failing to sign a striker is costing us dearly. Rondon looks dead and buried should have taken the 32m from China

No matter what striker plays in a pulis set up isnt going to be prolific infront of goal as they are always too isolated.

What about the midfield of 3 defensive midfielders that can't seem to get the ball to the striker?

Any forward needs the ball for him/them to have a impact on the game. Plus him/them need the ball to be played to his/there strengths, no chance of that happening the way we are playing.

I watched him very closely today mate. He controls around 75% of the punts that go anywhere near him. But the support for the lay off is terribly slow arriving. There is expecting him to hold it up and then there is expecting him to hold it up for 10 seconds. It's not going to happen.

Think the same could be said for any of Rondon, Phillips Chadli, Nyom, Gibbs, Greg, or Rodriguez, Tom.
He just does not get the best out of attacking players. They all spend most of their time defending apart from Rondon, who is in a different postcode!

We're not massive club and don't even sell out the home games. I think the club are happy to grind out the odd result and settle for boring games as long as it keeps us where the money is. The board will always choose money over fan enjoyment.

Irrespective as to who we play We look like a league two side playing away at a big club in the third round of the FA Cu.
I gotta disagree completely, a league two side against Man U. in a third round cup draw would without a doubt display more offensive intent than we do against anybody home or away.  >:(

I’ve always stuck up for pulis, always thought that  if he goes tomorrow I won’t cry but when he’s here I’ll appreciate the job he’s done and support him but can’t stick up for the record now. He has two games to get 1 win, can’t see it next week so Huddersfield is make or break for him. Starting to think though it is time to go, don’t want to get in the situation of him being one game for the sack all the time because the atmosphere Will  not be nice.

Whatever happens thank you Tony but I think it may be time!

Take nothing away from the goal? Rather than tackling each other our lot should have cleaned him out on the half way line

That performance was garbage. Complete and utter crap

I actually cannot describe how angry I was watching that.

And to piss me off even more, whilst these had their pampered journey home, we got ******* inebriated on as we left the ground and tried to find the station which was miles away. After yesterday looking at relegation odds a number of teams below or around us us are much bigger favourites to stay up than us, the bookies usually aren't far off
West Brom 7/2
Stoke 6/1
Leicester 14/1
Everton 20/1
Southampton 22/1
Title: Re: After Match Debate

If TP does not start setting up this team to win games against the likes of Southampton instead of setting up not to lose, I can see us ending up in the relegation scrap whereas a few weeks ago I thought no chance.
We just cannot close out games when we do get our noses in front and when we go behind we look dead and buried because we just cannot change our mindset, not getting a quality striker in is costing us dear, we are never going to create a glut of chances , but again yesterday Rodriguez had 2 good ones and Chadli hit woodwork.
Why Boufal was allowed to run that distance  with the ball without anybody taking one for the team I do not know, but it is getting worse not better,
We have a squad of solid mid table premiership professionals here and even without a proven striker and creative midfielder, if he let them off the leash I still think we can get enough points , some of the drawn games may well turn into losses , but some will turn into wins its much better to get 6 points from 4 matches with 2 wins than just 4 points with 4 draws , or no points for 4 defeats

Agreed. Actually thought we looked a lot better and certainly more creative (relative to what came before) when we switched to a central back three. However; couldn't feel too aggrieved about conceding when things were looking quite even given the pummelling Southampton gave us for the opening 55 minutes.

We are bottom on current form even excluding the matches after 40 points last season.
We are one of the teams who have scored the fewest number of goals.

Agree entirely. I've not been to an away game since Pulis took charge, but I certainly wouldn't be going to them at the minute because you know exactly how it is going to play out, it is not like the 'football' over recent months hasn't been the same every week.

not me, I still don't think it was a foul by McClean, and we still should have dealt better with the freekick into the box (even though there was a shove in Hegazi's back).

On Saturday Boufal began his run inside his own half, someone could have taken him out around the halfway line, getting a booking no doubt but giving away a free kick in a non dangerous area. The defending for the goal was pathetic.

That's my reason for going really, blind faith still at the minute and the fact that you sit by the same people for so many years it's more of a social thing than actually going to enjoy watching your team play.

In saying that, when we do not completely kill a game it can still be an enjoyable game to watch. We were awful against Watford but I still enjoyed the game as I thought Watford were superb on the day and their incisive passing and movement was good watch, I think the same will apply on Saturday so I can take some enjoyment out of the game, even if I can't out of my own team currently.

The West Ham/Stoke/Bournemouth home games were just watching paint dry exercises so I got very little enjoyment out of them other than the two goals we scored across the three games and Jay Rod looking exciting in the Bournemouth game which has since disappeared

I think that if they’d have known beforehand how poor we were going to be then many would not have gone. You are right insofar as it has happened before, but given that we won this fixture last year and they are not exactly pulling up trees at the moment, I would have gone with the expectation that we would at least ‘have a go’ at them.
The refund will never happen as it is down to the individual to go. The club would never entertain a refund as it is admitting their guilt.
My friend won’t be going again in a hurry and I suspect many others won’t either. Lack of support may be one of the few things Mr Williams and co will understand.
If this translates to the terraces on Saturday then we will see developments I am sure.

Kev with the money that comes in from Sky do you think they are worried about a couple of thousand not turning up because of the way we play. People have bought season tickets and I am sure many of them aye going waste the money they have spent.

I'm sure you are right and it is inconsequential but, any successful business has to have pride and belief in it's product surely.
They must watch this dross and wonder where the money went that they invested in the summer, at the very least.

Of course not; doubt Ancelotti would be able to do it with a lesser calibre of players in any event so don't think he would be the right fit with us

Sources close to West Brom boss Tony Pulis have spoken of their unease at how passionately the manager has begun railing against the sport of football.
It has been an open secret for some years that there’s no love lost between Pulis and football, but the intensity of the Welshman’s animosity towards the game and all who play it has recently become a worry.
“There was a time when Tony would at least appear interested in football and could engage in smalltalk about the game when needed, which is a useful skill when you’re a football manager by profession,” Martin Bradshaw, the author of Pulis’s biography That’s The Sound Of Da Pulis, told FourFourTwo.
“Of course, as soon as he was behind closed doors he’d revert back to favoured topics like lacrosse, opera and zero-point gravity, but he’d at least be willing to feign interest in the game for an hour here or there.
But lately he’s taken to referring to football as ‘crap ball’ quite openly, even in press conferences and in front of the players. He’s also banned all talk of football from the dinner table and, more worryingly, the training ground.”
Irritation and fury
During West Brom’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton, Pulis cut an increasingly agitated figure on the sidelines, partly due to the trace levels of football on show and partly due to frequent buffering during a science podcast he likes to listen to during games to ‘take the edge off’.

Need to set your expectations a lot lower mate. Either of the last 2 English Palace managers would head the list.

I think we have to acknowledge that Boufal can produce special moments and this was one. He was wrong footing people and no-one got close enough to him to take him out.

I could have done it from the other side of the pitch, had I been playing. Funny how the older you get the better you was.

As someone said on another thread, he wouldn't have got as far as our box if Yacob was playing
i know we are not no where enough on the front foot sitting too deep most of each game but its no coincidance since yacob has not been a regular starter we dont look nowhere near as solid at the back he"s the best at what he does that coupled with ball retention are the main concerns
