Jimmy Greaves
« on: April 08, 2020, 12:07:43 AM »
Apparently Jimmy Greaves has been admitted to hospital, though the report doesn't mention what the cause is.
I only saw him a couple of times live near the end of his career, but from the footage of goals he scored, he's the most talented British player I ever saw. There is footage of him dribbling past most of the opposition players before the rounding the keeper and putting the ball in the net. Not once, but several times.
Hope he pulls through.

I think it was a match against Spurs. Albion took a corner and the Spurs goalkeeper caught the ball Jimmy was out wide on the left and raced in towards the Albion goal. As he neared the goal he put the ball round the keeper. BRILLIANT!!

One of my fave matches ever was at the Hawthorns vs Spuds Easter Monday 1969. Jimmy Greaves scored a brace and looked like he could score every time he got hold of the ball. 3-1 down at half time we stepped it up 2nd half and came out 4-3 winners (Astle 2, T Brown, Hope).
Good luck Greavsie!

Fully agree - I recall a cup game at the Hawthorns, we played Spurs - I can’t remember if it was the year that Spurs achieved the double, I think it was circa 1964 .
Definitely the great Tottenham side. Anyway, Greavsie received the ball just outside the penalty area - there were 3or4 Albion defenders in the pen, he went round all of them and the goalie to score, unbelievable!! I think the score was 2-4.

What I especially admired about Greaves was his ability to dribble the ball through a defence and then round, or dummy, the keeper before scoring. There were a couple of goals  where you could hardly follow how he had done it. It's a very rare skill. You hardly ever see it nowadays, at least not in this country. It also needs the ability to stay cool and clinical in front of goal and to be aware how the goalkeeper is balanced.

Too young to see him play, but as a kid loved to watch him on the Saint and Greavesy show and then he seemed to disappear from the public gaze as sky and all their modern razzmatazz took over.

What I do know is that he was a great finisher and felt very upset to be not starting in wc final.

I hope gets better soon.

How unlucky was he not to get a world cup winners medal?
I don't think he ever forgave Sir Alf for that

He was the greatest goal scoring machine ever produced by this country.
To get an idea of how he played I would liken him to Messi.
Similar size nippy fast close control brilliant to watch and unlike Messi played happy.

Just read on teletext that Jimmy will be having tests today, according to his agent and friend Terry Baker who states it is not coronavirus related he also stated it does not relate to his previous illness and hopefully he won't be in hospital for too long. Good news get well soon Jimmy.

If there were highlights of a single game of Jimmy at his best to view what would you recommend? I've never really seen him play either but curious now.

He had an injury - by the time he was fit enough to play the England team Geoff Hurst  was an automatic pick.

That's true but Jimmy was a bit of a lad, whereas Geoff was a Ramsey "type". Fair play to Sir Alf though,a big gamble, and nobody could have seen the hat-trick coming.

Also he played on a lot of rubbish and bumpy pitches, in the 60's.
His control was sublime.

Just watched 'The Best Of' on Youtube and he looks like some player even taking into the fact it's a best of. Reminds me a lot of modern attacks but 40/50 years earlier.

The thing that struck me was the crowd scenes. Can you imagine going to watch a match in a suit and tie :o
