I'd keep the same team but change Barry or Brunt for Sako on the bench, otherwise we only have Gayle to change things from an attacking perspective.

Anyone driving to the game and passing Cambridge on the way back? I am going with a friend, but unfortunately the last train from Ipswich to Cambridge is leaving at 21.45. We booked our trip from Norway before the game was moved back to friday and we have prepaid our hotel in Cambridge without any possibility to get any refund.  If anyone is driving to, or passing, Cambridge after the game and give us lift we will of course pay you for the inconvenience.

Need 4 points from next 2 away games which sets us up nicely for the tough home games v Brentford and the vile. Sky really have shafted us with the fixtures too.

Surely though Gayle would be through the middle whereas HRK was being played more as the right sided player in the front 3, although the 3 were pretty fluid so maybe it's not hugely important where they line up.

Personally I'd start with the same line up as the Leeds game; I think they've earned it.

I'd leave Gayle on the bench. What a weapon to call on if we need him.

Besides, everyone did so well last game my message to them would be "OK that performance earned the shirt for Ipswich now make sure you keep it".

Sends out the right message to everyone in the squad.

Yeah, if Gayle comes in, it has to be Rodriguez, which I would advocate if fit. Would be harsh on Rodriguez as he had a decent game Saturday, but he's had far more poor ones and I know who I'd back in a one on one every day of the week. We will likely create less chances away so have to be clinical.
Sako or Burke off the bench should HRK revert to type.

It'll be interesting to see if Barnes makes this game given his withdrawal from the U21s with a foot injury.

I note all the points raised, but my stance will always be that you cannot leave the player who will be the Championship top scorer on the bench if he is available.

He would most likely replace Morrison alongside Livermore and Phillips.

No way would I do that but with DM it wouldn't surprise me.

I think we may well see Gayle back in for HRK and possibly Barry in for Morrison, he may also  bring Bartley in as centre half.

I can see why we would play Gayle, HRK had a great last game, but Gayle is better, Barry for Morrison is also not unreasonable (though I would stick with Morrison to start).  I would be disappointed if we bring Bartley back in.  I am not convinced he has the skill we need in defence.  I have not seen him tackle well and his passing is woeful.  Position wise I am also unconvinced.

If the changes go beyond Gayle for HRK then I will give up with Darren.

Bartley and Brunt should be nowhere near the starting XI

You cant change a winning team (many of said it was our best performance of the season) to drop anyone after that wouldn't be fair in all honesty.

If everyone is fit and ready then the 11 against Leeds have earned themselves another game together.

Post by: beechyboy90 on November 15, 2018, 07:28:32 PM
The team should be kept the same. They earned the shirt for the next game can they keep it? Long term I guess Gayle will come in for Rodriguez who has had far more poor games than good ones- (despite being better v Leeds) other thing to consider is is it likely that HRK can continue where he left of? Longer term would sako or Burke leko etc be an option in the role of wing forward?

Plenty of chance to utilise squad when the games come thick and fast. Livermore and Dawson are both a card away from suspension so changes will come about at some point.

Having Barry on bench to bring on for Morrison when he tires to control game is fine with me. I would much rather him get 10-20 minutes than be starting.
Title: Re: Team
Post by: NJS on November 15, 2018, 07:28:51 PM
HRK did a fairly good holdup job against Leeds but the long balls went out to him on the wing where they had relatively short full backs.
However, you can't change a winning side I think it must be 4-3-3 with last week's line-up.
It's the subbing where the smart tactics lie.  I would swap Hoolahan for Morrison if the latter tires (sort of like for like?) and Gayle for whoever isn't performing at 55-60 minutes.

I wouldn't use Hoolahan at all. I think he is the one player that doesn't really fit into this system. If we need to replace Morrison, Barry is the obvious answer. To be honest though I expect DM will replace Morrison with Brunt from the start.

I would be surprised to see us revert back to 3-5-2 tomorrow night, unless any injuries dictate that.

I expect to see the same 11 against Leeds and a similar set up, with abit more onus on getting on the front foot.

Early goal and its game over.

I think tomorrow’s become a big game for us we need to start building some momentum to put a good run together with the games we have coming up. Playing Friday gives us a good chance to put pressure on the teams above especially as Norwich go away to Swansea & Borough away to Brentford.

My sentiments exactly. Better players, should be looking to control the middle of the park and pick them apart with our superior striking options

Can't lie, Jones' comments have dented my enthusiasm a bit but really hope that, whatever formation we play, we should have too much for these. Mind you, when factoring in our awful away record, especially against lowly opposition, i would not be surprised to see another draw or worse.
Gayle's return should give us a massive boost though, so going for a 1-2 Baggies win.  ;)

Gayle on the bench?????? What the hell is wrong with DM and GJ? Are they on drugs or something? How do you leave the best striker in the league by a long way on the bench? Aam i missing something or should Gayle not be an automatic choice when fit? I'm assuming he is fit as he's had lots of time to get over his recent injury and scored a superb goal when he came on aganst Leeds.

I don't think you can change the 11 after Leeds in fairness, Kanu has earned his spot for now at least. I think the one thing Kanu did well was holding the ball up which is his one strength over Gayle.

Agreed. Never been a fan of Kanu but he was a big part of making that formation work. He deserves a chance and I suspect he will probably blow it because he’s never had two good games in a row. Whether we can play this formation with Gayle is another question.

1 up, could have been more, should have been a pen just before half-time. Looking dangerous though and Ipswich haven't troubled us.

They're not going to get anywhere with long ball against Dawson and Hegazy but imagine Lambert will tweak that at half-time. More of the same from Albion, hopefully. A second goal will kill Ipswich, bottom and winless at home.

Barnes looks dangerous and Tosin has come on leaps and bounds since that first performance away at Forest. COYB.

Positions against these are not so important, they are utterly dire. You’d stick Gayle through the middle and play J-rod cutting in  from the left, Barnes from the right

Delighted with the 3 points. Up to 2nd. The last 10 minutes was dreadful and totally unnecessary. Tosin has sadly opened the door for Bartley  :(

Gayle didn't have any impact he needs to play through the middle. Crazy if you can't see Morrison pulling the strings in midfield last 2 games, under radar but in total control.

Very pleased with Hegazi and Gibbs tonight who were superb and Phillips a deserved man of the match. Barnes put in a poor performance but then came alive for the 2nd goal.

HRK Livermore Dawson and Rodriguez were solid 6/7 out of 10s. Jay misses far too many easy chances though.

Keeper had very little to do, but did what he needed to competently.

A word on Ipswich, very poor though would love to have Chalobah for Livermore .

I thought we played average, but Ipswich were woeful.

Defensively I still think the 4 at the back is much more sound, but yet again we looked sloppy. Tosin had a Leon Barnett-type performance; really good for most of it and then an awful howler. Having said that, I'd still have him over Bartley.

In fact, I'd keep the same 11. Kanu isn't fantastic but works well in the system, and would have set-up Rodriguez had he finished properly.

Shame we couldn't manage a clean sheet (or make the most of our chances) but there's no doubt we look a much more balanced side with four at the back. Morrison hasn't shown his best form yet but he's helped a lot to improve that balance. Good performance but you have to put it in context - Ipswich are a poor side. No weaknesses tonight

We have won without playing well. Job done.

Positives:
Won without playing well
Barnes had a bad game by his standards but still caused mayhem and scored
Rodriguez has missed 2 sitters but has still bagged.
Defence looked reasonably solid until they scored.
Matt Phillips looking the business in centre midfield.
None of our players got injured and nobody is suspended to my knowledge.

Negatives
Clean sheet again thrown away
Subs to manage game were abit slow and not fully utilised considering the fixtures are coming thick and fast.

Overall can't really complain takes the pressure off the Swansea game now, which I would happily take a point. If we can follow that up with 3 points that will be ideal

Completely disagree with you on Morrison. I don't think its any coincidence that we have steadied up significantly and have had a lot more control in the middle since he's started starting games.
He did a lot of the simple basic linking play tonight, easily goes unnoticed, but making himself available, short little passes to keep attacks moving forward. If he stays fit, he's going to be a huge player for us this season.

Agree, Morrison has always been good for us in the middle, especially in the Championship. With him around, there's much less gaps whereas when Brunt started he left gaping holes.

Thought Morrison looks fitter than he has in years , while I didn't think he was quite at his best he certainly didn't vanish.

Possibly, but it doesn't take from the fact that Morrison has been very good the last 3 games. He'll never be the Mozza of years ago, but he's playing damn well at the moment, and I would anticipate he will maintain his form no matter what system we play.

Solid 7s all over the pitch.

Gutted for Tosin as he had a very good game apart from his mistake for the goal

Apart from Tosin's mistake I thought it was a very good away performance. A win is a win but I thought we had so many chances to put the game away. I must say though, Ipswich look quite poor to be honest. If we hadn't gifted them a goal I don't think they'd have scored. The lad was unlucky hitting the post though.

Just got back from the game, though JRod got the first goal the 2 chances he missed were inexcusable wanted far too much time when he should have hit the thing, had they fallen to Gayle both would have been in the back of the net. Livermore, Phillips, Hegazi all had very good games as did Tosin hopefully he puts the mistake behind him quickly.

Overall a solid away performance bar letting them back in it, they shouldn’t have been allowed to have a sniff they’re a garbage team but it wouldn’t be the Albion if we did it the easy way. That free kick at the end looked in the moment it left his foot thank god it went wide.

Have to say that I was surprised to see how many baggies were there, definitely more than 1000. Well done all

Cant sleep so watching the match as I had recorded it, watched game on my Sky Go but just in the background when I was out.

J-Rod has just scored and the whole play from the back to the front was superb.

Dawson has been outstanding so far for me

Id still have Gayle in over HRK but he deserved his chance after the Leeds game

thought it was a great goal though

I'd rather not have clean sheets if it meant we had Middlesbrough's manager!

Let's just keep scoring more than the opposition, that'll do me.

Thank you Albion, thank you Darren Moore.

Good away performance, good team performance we looked quite comfortable.
JRod has hit 100, sure he'll be saying to himself that he should have hit 101 & 102 last night, as it happened it didn't cost us.
They didn't cause us too many problems yet we all new they would score at some time, need a few clean sheets to give the defenders a bit of confidence. Tosin had a good game but made a simple mistake again in the end it didn't cost us.
Mozza was never at the races and the game seemed to pass him by, thought he would have got hooked sooner than he did.

Into second place before the Saturday games. Happy with that.
Just wondered why we hadn't got Burke or Sako on the bench when Moore had said they were all fit with the exception of Bartley

The clean sheets will come if we carry on with more of the same, we look way more solid. Johnstone has barely had a shot to save in two games.

A good 1st half and not so good 2nd half. Thought the ref was an absolute clown. Should of had a penalty and a few more of their players into the book for cynical fouls. Spoke to an Ipswich fan on the train home and he said the only reason they had 22,000 odd there was because of the tickets being a tenner. thought their support was very poor.

I read last week that there was also some sort of initiative where tickets were given for this game to people who couldn't usually afford to go.

13 shots 3 on target If we had made it 3-0 or 4-0 then when they when they scored we wouldn't have timewasted or panicked. But because we had only scored 2 we panicked. Just stick in the corner. But a win is a win although our discipline is awful. Yellow cards galore. Livermore close to being banned again

Just watched highlights and its like watching a completly different team than under Pulis.
The movement off the ball is excellent, dragging opposition all over the pitch, making runs through from deep. Under Pulis it was just lumping long balls up to an isolated No.9. No wonder we are creating chances for fun.  Whether that is Graeme Jones I don't know, but I certainly know which football I prefer watching.

I don't think he is, the 2nd booking he got at Wigan was his 5th yellow of the season but it also meant a red card so it was a one match ban either way.
Since returning from his ban he has 1 yellow (against Leeds). I assume that having served the ban his slate was clean again otherwise the Leeds booking would have been counted as his 5th and resulted in a 1 match ban and he couldn't have played at Ipswich.

If you work through the FA Discipline/Suspension site linked below......

(Click onto 'One Caution Away', type in 'West Bromwich Albion' and click onto 'Championship')

http://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/discipline/suspensions

...... it shows that both Livermore and Dawson are one booking away from suspension.

We play Swansea this Wednesday (28th) and the booking amnesty kicks in on November 30th.

Keep their noses clean and they're fine, if not and they pick up yellow cards then both miss Brentford at home.

Thanks for that Dan.

I am a little puzzled though as Livermore was supposedly booked against Stoke,Bristol city, Sheff Wednesday, Wigan (2) and Leeds which is either 5 or 6 (depending on whether the second booking counts as a yellow and also a red or is just a red)  so he should have served a 1 match ban against Ipswich.

You and me both chap re the confusion. Only thing I can think of would be that perhaps an automatic suspension for a sending off may not be included into the totting up process for yellows (even though he got two). Withdraw the two yellows v Wigan and he's on four bookings, hence one more prior to November 30th and out again.
