Villa very poor with no cutting edge but you can only beat what is in front of you. Managed the game well and the second half approach was spot on. Potentially pivotal result for the rest of the season.

Thoughts on watching at the Hawthorns?
« Reply #404 on: February 17, 2019, 08:54:47 AM »
Personally I wasn’t much of a fan. The game was too far from the seats, and the west stand has next to no legroom making it very cramped. No one knew whether to sing or sit in silence so any chanting often abated. I probably wouldn’t rush back to another one, I was expecting a little bit more!

I went. I thought the West Stand was nice, too small obviously, but nice. It was always going to be a bit of a strange experience it's difficult to really get any singing going when the game is going on somewhere else.

I agree with you regarding the viewing. The screens are too small to get a decent view of the game.

I'm similar to you I don't think it's ideal but it was better than nothing.

Decent solid performance against poor opposition but the result is more important.

Thought we looked good value for the goals at half time and if Murphy had any composure or strength then we may well have been 4 up at half time. I appreciate that he's only been at the club for a couple of weeks now but he doesn't fill me with confidence as he gets knocked off the ball far too easily, doesn't seem to have a tackle in him and gives up too easily once he's lost the ball. I hope it is just a confidence thing.

Was hoping that we'd bring Montero on as our last sub as I thought we needed an out ball to help relieve the pressure we were inviting on ourselves but we coped well with the Villa attacks.

I thought we were a step above the display from Tuesday and apart from one error in the first 15 minutes (which led to the Abraham chance that was well stopped by Johnstone) I thought we looked solid.

Midfield looked better for having Barry in from the start and Harper continues to look solid.

Rodriguez was the pick of the forwards but Robson-Kanu took his goal well.

I don’t care how we beat them as long as we win.

As it happens, that was probably one of our easiest wins of the seasons against a poor mid table outfit.

Good performances by everyone. A thoroughly enjoyable day

At the time I thought the defensive substitutions second half were wrong, but listening to DM, I can see that with HRK injured we didn't really have any decent attacking subs. Maybe Darren knows our strengths and resilience as a defensive unit.
But I'm not getting too carried away, because after all, we've only beaten an average mid-table Championship outfit. The sterner tests will come against Leeds and Bristol City away and Sheff Utd. and Blues at home.

Bizarre comments from Smith after the game. He basically explains what happened and sounds bitter/as if they were somehow unlucky. No wonder he is struggling.

At the moment, Smith is out of his depths, he’s never had to shoulder such high expectations and demands for success from a fan base that noting less than being returned to their rightful place at the top of the Premier League will do. Well, that’s not going to work is it?

Easy Win against the Vile at the Seal Pen They looked dire looked a like us last season in that Second Half we didn't even need to create chances in the Second Half, what happened to Villa's late goals dried up? Did we see this coming?

But if he’s talking to a deluded audience they would probably agree?

Biggest mistake he made was keeping Terry as his no2,no doubt he will be sneaking behind the scenes so he can take over ..

I've read of a couple of rumblings online which suggest they don't see eye to eye and it's having an effect in the dressing room. All completely uncorroborated of course but you just never know. If so then we could be posting about 'John Terry's Aston Villa' in the not too distant future.

I think as soon as John Terry was appointed number two then its just a matter of time before he takes over as number one, worst thing they can do. Best thing is keep Smith and let him have the Summer to get rid of some of the big wage earners and try and get the squad sorted, time to judge them will be this time next season. The place is a mess.

They are awful - they looked a good side at The Hawthorns in December but they was a shadow of that side.

Where is McSkittle?
