The Masters 2021
« on: April 06, 2021, 06:44:33 AM »
The 2021 Masters takes place this weekend, not that many months after the delayed 2020 edition. One of the best sporting weekends of the year.

I usually have a few bets but won't do that with the bookies closed this year so what's everyone's predictions?

A lot of money will go on Westwood with his recent form. I think the Golf world would love to see it, but I don’t think it’ll happen.

I think Spieth will do it again

Everyone seems to be ignoring the 2 favourites DJ and Bryson (Good, I can't stand the latter). The pundits favourite this year is Justin Thomas who I had last year. There is also a lot of love for Rahm and punters backing for Spieth.

Personally I always try to swerve the favourites and so I've gone outside the top 8.

Brooks Koepka - 28/1 - you won't often find Koepka this far out. Some brilliant recent results as well.

Collin Morikawa - 30/1 - a bit of a masters novice which I don't love, but he will be a multi major winner and has the game for Augusta

Webb Simpson -  35/1 - major winner, decent enough masters record and features prominently in a number of the key stats.

Patrick Reed will be in the running and were I putting money on it be tempted, but like Bryson I can't stand him so I won't pick him if i don't have to. Instead I'll go:

Paul Casey - 40/1 - top 10 finishes in his last 4 events, seems unfancied because of his failure to win a major up to this point. Got to be worth an each way shot at that price.

For those looking at each way shot, I am surprised to see Westwood at 40s given his recent form.

No par 3 tournament again, meh.

The greens are running very, very fast so those backing Reed might be on to something.

Due to the speed it's running, i'm going to drop my Morikawa prediction, at least until his putting improves.

I'd replace him with 70-1 shot Louis Oosthuizen who has some decent enough recent form, great at Augusta and crucially - one of the best putters around.

Difficult to see Johnson not being there or thereabouts. Garcia , Oosthuizen, Fitzpatrick all been playing pretty well and each way flutter on any may  pay off . Simpson appeals  at decent price but am leaning towards Thomas as likely winner

Not at the moment mate (£117) . I have been a fan of his since following him round at Birkdale when he was an amateur and finished equal 4th. He was a real cool customer even then. He can handle this, and is in a wonderful position. Come on Justin ;)

When everyone's struggled and 3 under is good enough for 2nd place, 7 under in th evening with even quicker green is amazing really.

Would love him to go one better than his playoff loss to Sergio 5 or so years ago.

Matsuyama will take some beating now with his 4 shot lead. He has always had the feel of an Adam Scott or a Jason Day - somebody who was finishing that consistently in the majors top tens that it was more a case of when not it.

Rose has done ok in his last 2 rounds but his failure to go under par since the first round looks like it's going to cost him a second major.

As for my picks, the less said the better. I don't think i've ever done this bad. I need Webb Simpson to shoot a 4 under par round tomorrow to give me any chance of an (on paper) each way win.

Really pleased for Matsuyama. Top 6 finishes at every single major yet still chasing his maiden win before today, at 29 it always felt like a case of when and not if, but there are enough Westwoods and Donalds, Strichers, Kuchars and now Fowlers who were always the bridesmaid.

Great for the Asian tours as well, with a few interesting golfers coming through and consecutive years with a top 5 finish.

Odds on Matsuyama winning more? Got to be good.
