comparison
« on: October 05, 2018, 11:23:25 AM »
I just looked at the 2009/10 squad which won promotion
a couple of things strike me in comparison to the present squad (all my opinion of course)

a) 2009/10 had FAR greater strength in depth
b) Our forwards today are far better
c) our keepers today are far weaker
d) our midfield had more legs (skill ???)

Would I rather have the current squad or the 2009 one? I would probably go with 2009, thoughts

1   GK   Dean Kiely
2   DF   Joe Mattock
3   DF   Jonas Olsson
4   DF   Marek ÄŒech
9   CF    Roman Bednář
10   FW   Ishmael Miller
11   MF   Chris Brunt

Would only take Olsson, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Bednar and Tamas from that list to be honest.
You're right about the depth though, would rather have Miller or Wood coming off the bench than HRK. I usually say I'd rather have anyone than HRK though, but I'd clearly forgotten how god awful Luke Moore was.

2009 squad looks more balanced, but how much would we love to have the central midfield combination of Mulumbu, Dorrans and a young James Morrison playing within this set up.

Agree that 09 had more balance.
I also think depth is massively important in this league and even going back to the Megson era, depth is often a trait with teams who go up automatically.

09 is far better, although it didn't have a striker to compare with Gayle.

The below would all either start or be on the bench, and those still here (Brunt, Morrison) were more capable of getting around the pitch.  The very presence of Steven Reid would also allow us to play 4 at the back more comfortably if needed.

1   GK   Dean Kiely
3   DF   Jonas Olsson
4   DF   Marek ÄŒech
9   CF    Roman Bednář
10   FW   Ishmael Miller
11   MF   Chris Brunt
14   MF   Jerome Thomas
21   MF   Youssuf Mulumbu
27   MF   James Morrison
44   MF   Steven Reid

Easily the best midfield in the division back then. The strikerforce was weak but we didn't need them with how good Dorrans, Mozza, Brunt and Mulumbu were that year.

Tough call but personally prefer the squad this season to the one back in 2009. What wins it for me is the strike force, we have so many goals in us it's makes us far more fun to watch.

Coincidentally we are on the exact same amount of points from 12 games as we were in October 2009. 24 points. Just hope we can keep it up because we've proportionality played more teams in the lower half of the league than the top half, it's only going to get tougher!

Behave lol

Think some people are looking back with Rose coloured glasses.

The only player with any quality there is Dorrans. A few others like mozza, brunt and mulumbu had a good amount to offer, but the rest got stick just as much as the current lot do.

Hegazi is the new Tamas, unpredictable and not a great deal of quality. Maybe a slight improvement, hard to say. And Bartley reminds me of Meite.

The telling sign of quality in a team is how many internationals they have. Think we had about 7 back then (most of whom were hardly regulars). Think last season we had quite a few. Now we're back down to about 7 or 8.

Dawson and Gibbs have quality, but the rest of our defence is woeful. Overall I'd say we have more quality now.
