ref sends off player for tackling naked man

When the Dorchester Town boss spotted the Borat impersonator being chased by stewards in his side's Blue Square Bet South game against Havant and Waterlooville, the former Sheffield United man stepped in to help.
But as the offender was being escorted from the pitch on Monday, Vickers was dismissed for violent conduct by referee David Spain.
Vickers, whose side went on to lose 3-1, said: 'I am dumbfounded.
'As the guy ran on to the pitch without any of the stewards getting near him, I thought I was doing them a favour.
'My only thought was to get hold of him so we could get on with the game. I grabbed him, brought him to the ground and the stewards thanked me for it.
'But the ref decided to send me off and it beggars belief. Their players begged the ref not to send me off and their chairman even offered to take a player off to even things up.
'In hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have done it. I'm sure people will crucify me but I have broad shoulders

------------- this is what former ref graham poll said -----------------------

Sportsmail's referee expert Graham Poll says: 'This clip probably validates the question "Who'd be a referee?"
'The law doesn't stipulate who you need to act in a violent manner towards - just that you have acted in a violent manner. And yet, didn't the player just speed up the process of removing the idiot who decided to mess about?
'The reaction of the players following the red cards proves how they feel. But the advice to players - when police and stewards are present - must be this: let them do their jobs and concentrate on doing yours.'

----------------------------- this is what i say ----------------------------------

The stewards were not doing their job, they were slowly walking, the referee didnt ask for any police to come on or for the stewards to speed up .. stupid refereee

If a naked bloke ran on the pitch at the Albion...
As in the above story the Stewards would be slow to react...
As they'd all be arguing with and eyeing us up in the Brummie.... ;D

My old team :D played for these at youth level before joining Hayling United, just thought i'd get that in :-*
That is absaloutley shocking, I bet no other ref in the country would have done the same thing! But what ever gets the local boys a win is fine by me ;)

Its all sounds abit stupid If I'm honest, the steward apparently thanked him for doing their job for god sake. Maybe a yellow card, but I thought a red was abit harsh. However, if their are rules in place you have to abide by them.

It was a stupid decision and how Graham 3 yellows Poll can defend him is beyond me.

The stewards were not doing their job so he stepped in. Maybe he should have just grabbed him but the ref was an idiot, proving the level of officiating common sense in the country is very low.

may be the player was a steward but because his team needed him, he had to play ;)

Would of been a ridiculous yellow as well. Bit of common sense and not blindly following the rules wouldn't go a miss in this day and age.

speaking as a referee myself, id of done exactly what the referee did in sedning the player off.

the referee has no choice but to enforce the laws of football, if he hadnt of sent that player off, he may of possibly had the sack, and being a level 3 referee, he would of had to work very hard to get where he is.

The laws of football though require some common sense.

If a man ran onto the pitch and had a knife .. and the player took him down, would YOU have sent him off ? after all, it would be the letter of the law.

Is it not a crime to come onto the pitch ?

The referee clearly lacked common sense ..
The game was disrupted , the stewards were walking and showing little effort to stop the streaker, the referee should have told the stewards to hurry up (minimum), he could also have directed for a policeman to come onto the pitch and arrest the streaker ..

Instead, he did nothing, until a player got sick of it and did the right thing

a bit of common sense was needed
