West Bromwich Albion FC / Relegation / Survival
« on: November 08, 2020, 04:24:46 PM »
The league table is starting to establish itself. There is a clear mini-league bottom 5 of Sheff Utd, Burnley, Albion, Fulham and Brighton.

To put in context how consistently poor all five clubs have been - of the last 25 premier league games involving the bottom 5 there has been just 1 win and you guessed it, it was Fulham beating us last weekend! The record combined of all five teams over the last five games is: 1 win, 10 draws and 14 defeats, an average of 0.52 points per game! So, the only good news is that even after Man Utd post the international break we are not going to be cut adrift as none of the bottom five are capable of picking up results.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Positives
« on: September 20, 2020, 09:53:16 PM »
The forum has been a massive whingefest this weekend, which I acknowledge I have played a large part in so I just wanted a thread to list the positives we can take:

-Diangana and Pereira both scored brilliant goals
-Some of our passing and interplay looked slick
-Ivanovic is coming into the team to strengthen the defence
-The league cup game against Brentford gives valuable minutes to our squad
-Button and Kipre could both break into the first team soon
-Transfer business and talks are ongoing with several targets
-International break coming up, giving the coaching staff time to integrate the squad together
-We've yet to try our successful formations / patterns of play from last season
-Burnley, Fulham, Sheff Utd, West Ham are all set to struggle
-Pundits have already written us off, low expectations

I'm not sure how many have stumbled across this Albion podcast with Adrian Goldberg and Chris Lepkowski?

Pretty entertaining and informative.

Some interesting discussions with Kevin Donovan, Super Bob and Paul Scharner.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Bilic - back him or sack him?
« on: July 23, 2020, 12:43:27 PM »
Partisan Baggie and I think Johnny Cash want Bilic sacked. Myself and Partisan agreed to hold a poll on this once the season was over. I think their opinion whilst valid makes no sense and that Bilic has done a great job in difficult circumstances in a tough league. Simple poll to see where the fanbase on here stand.

Matheus Pereira looks like a talent, that is a loan signing I would be positive about it we can get it over the line.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Injuries / medical department
« on: April 07, 2019, 06:01:16 PM »
Bug bear of mine for a while. Two seasons ago the sports science / medical department won an premiership vote for performance of the year. Since then our key players have been bedevilled with long term injuries. Morrison, Gibbs, Phillips, Barry, Evans, you name it. Also our players don't seem very fit. They look like they are running through treacle half the time. Some of this can be put down to TP and the fact we keep playing an very old bunch of knackered footballers but the number of injuries to important players has set us back. Phillips this season in particular. It was also noticeable how much fitter and slimmer Rondon looks at Newcastle. Look at how bulky Livermore is. Is our squad in the best shape it should be? I'm not convinced.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Looking back
« on: March 24, 2018, 01:36:53 PM »
Seven games to go but we are 100% relegated so it's time to look back at what a disaster this season has been and how our PL decade has unravelled. The future is uncertain and difficult. I don't see the current squad bouncing back, they are more likely to do a Sunderland and a lot of them will have no interest in playing football in the championship.

I've been looking back over my posts from last summer to see how things have worked out against what I thought at the time. My comments below about Gibbs, Burke, Greg, Rondon, Barry, lack of pace, complacency with injuries and the medical department have all proved to be spot on. Which is incredibly frustrating as the writing was on the wall. Our demise has been entirely predictable.

Quote
July 22: "Glad were not signing Gibbs. Very average player on his way down. Not tall, strong, or decent in the air. "

August 1st: "Last year we had the best record in the league for player availability which it seems had led to complacency. The board and medical department have been congratulating themselves but luck must surely be a very important factor. One unlucky season with a few serious injuries to key players would cripple our very small squad and we cannot expect the likes of Mcauley to last forever.

The team is stale, the manager is professional but dull and the board have no ambition to incentivise fans to grow the fan base. We have no decedent strikers, aren't scoring any goals from open play and just lost to Bristol Rovers (albeit friendly). Throw in the awful finish to last season and it's very difficult to be positive in the slightest"

August 5th: "Can someone with more gazumption than me remind me how many goals we have scored this pre-season and how many from open play? I recall a Dawson header against Palace from a corner I think and Robson-Kanu at Port Vale. Have we scored twice in single game?  What's worrying for me is we have been so pathetic for so long that these things are now considered normal."

August 14th: "I work in Liverpool and the Everton fans I know laughed and apologised when the Barry link first emerged."

August 24th on Burke: "He started 10 games for Forest and just 5 for RB Leipzig last season - how on earth do 15 starts in two years constitute two full seasons? We're signing potential. I've not seen much of him, looking at YouTube videos he seems be very direct but a bit chaotic in his decision making and final pass or shot. Hopefully he's a replacement for McClean who gives his maximum but lacks ability."

August 30th: "As fantastic as it is to be linked with and signing defenders and defensive midfielders is there any chance of signing a striker with pace and a decent goal to game ratio? Or have we given up on the pretence of trying to score from open play?"

August 30th on Greg: "Judging by the meltdown on this thread I'd presumed we'd signed Messi. Good signing on loan for a year and hope he settles in quick and makes the impact hoped for but I can't get anywhere near as excited as some of the posters on here with another defensive midfielder. Good luck Krychowiak."

August 30th on what we needed: "Striker with lots of pace - we have lots of average paced players 27-30 but not an out and out quick striker which we have been missing for years. Fosteri at Wednesday wouldn't be the worst option".

September 8th: "Rondon is an awful footballer who can't control the ball, link the play or shoot. On the plus side he works hard and is good at heading crosses. He's just a very poor striker who isn't a goalscorer. From the BBC: "Rondon was once again poor with no efforts and a 41.2% passing accuracy, which is not ideal if your role is to bring others into play."

I have zero confidence that the club will be in state to mount a concerted promotion push next season. The club is in turmoil with uncertainty at all levels.

IMO:

                            Foster

Morrison    Yacob        Fletcher / Field    Phillips

                Chadli

                             Berahino / Kanu

Leaving Leko, Rondon and three of the above on the bench.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Just some of the problems / way forward
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:20:53 PM »
1) Set-pieces
Since Clarke was sacked we have lost the ability to defend free-kicks and corners. Every time the ball now comes into our box it is more luck than judgement that it is cleared. This is despite the personnel not changing. For example and off the top of my head, away at Palace Billy Jones gifts them a two goal lead with a free header from a corner. Home to Chelsea; first half injury time and Chris Brunt is too busy shouting at the ref to help his team mates out; Eto flicks the ball on and it's a goal. Away at Hull today, second ball comes in and all the back four are switched off and the wrong side, Long turns it home.

2) Being too nice
Take today away at Hull. First half a Hull player is down injured (not a head injury) and we have the ball in midfield.  We elect to stop and kick it out of play. I then notice Mulumbu on two occasions shaking the oppositions hand and picking them up. We have to be more ruthless, to play with more intensity and play to the whistle. The players also need to engage their brains. Last week against Utd at 0-1 we had ten men with Brunt injured. Rather than put the ball out to allow our sub on we play on with ten and concede again - that was possibly the stupidest thing I've seen the team do this season (which is some effort).

3) Too naive / refereeing decisions
We are also far too naive. Yes the Ref and a cheating Shane Long screwed us over today but we know he's a diver so why did Dawson get so tight on the edge of the box? Ditto for Reid on Ramires - do not give the referee an option to hurt you.

4) Slow and ponderous
We spend a lot of time trying to dominate teams in the centre of the pitch with slow and ponderous play between our back four and midfield but it;s all irrelevant. We need to get in behind teams, get men in support of Anichebe and crucially get men in the box.

5) Crosses
We need to work harder to stop the ball coming into our box and we need to work the opposition goal keeper more. Common sense.

6) Work rate and desire
Today at Hull we lacked the desire to give it everything, which isn't good enough. I'm singling out Morrison in particular who is happy to coast through games and refuses to get stuck in.

7) Current form and issues with players:

Foster: Long time since he has kept a clean sheet but seems ok enough without being brilliant. Needs to watch his kicking and stop trying to punch the ball and learn to catch it more.

Ridgewell: Not exactly a fan favourite but not the worst defensively. Struggles to get forward and is very average but has experience and is our only viable option at left-back (indictment of the board).

Olsson / McCauley / Dawson: I lump these together. I have no real issues with any of them save that they need to improve their contribution at set-pieces when defending and attacking. They also need to keep a high line, press the team up the pitch and try to move the ball a bit quicker.

Reid / Jones: One is slow and old; the other is quick but dumb. One is strong and good in the air but susceptible to pace on the ground; the other runs around like a headless chicken and losses concentration but can bomb forward more. Horses for courses; they are both limited in different ways. Depends who plays in front of them really.

Mulumbu: What has happened to this guy. Still an important player but nowhere near his old self. Disturbing how his first movement is always backwards and how quickly he gets rid of the ball even when he is in space. Needs to be more positive with the ball. Still great defenisively but seems to not be up to speed and prepared for the pace of the game and his passing and movement is not up to scratch. Needs a rocket up his backside.

Yacob: Please come back from injury, we miss you.

Morrison: Runs around like a fairy in midfield, losses out on numerous 50/50 challenges. Shooting from distance is abysmal, the ball is closer to going out for a throw in than testing the opposition GK. Occasionally plays well with some intelligence and drive but only for 20 minutes of the 90 - doesn't seem to want it badly enough.

Thievy: Decent, good left foot. Seems to be confused to be playing with a bunch of players who do not want to attack or score goals. A bit raw.

Dorrans: Steady, just back in the fold; not sure what his mentality is. Similar to a few of our other midfielders.

Morgan: Half-decent but lacks pace, gives the team some width but usually lacks support. In and out of the team, no consistency; difficult for him and he probably has one eye on France and pre-season.

Brunt: Good at leaving the left wing to stand in the centre circle. Excellent at screaming at the ref. Great at hitting the corner flag from free-kicks. Will score one great goal a season. Slow. His teammates seem to love him and insist on passing him the ball at every opportunity.

Gera: Age is setting in. Sometimes great, sometimes terrible. Only seems to provide the odd cameo performance.

Sinclair: No comment as he never plays. Used to be a great player two seasons ago, we spend a long time chasing him in the summer - shame we didn't tell his agent he'd only get 10 minutes on the pitch per month.

Sess: Good quality but erratic to say the least. At least he worries the opposition occasionally. Work rate questionable at times but needs to start against Cardiff.

Aniechbe: Now he's starting every week his performance levels and work rate are starting to dip. That said the service is terrible; we need to get the ball into his feet in the box as much as possible.

Berahino & Vydra: They have the ability to score, we just don't see a great deal of either. Would do better in a better team. Vydra probably offers more at the moment but at least Berahino isn't afraid to shoot.

Rant over!

Finally the good news:

Fulham, Sunderland and Cardiff all lost today; if we can beat Cardiff next week then we have a great chance of staying up. Cardiff have been leaking goals like a sieve, we need to pick as many quick and attacking players as possible and hit them with everything we have, it's not like we can defend anyway. My team (subject to injuries obviously):

Foster
Jones; McCauley, Dawson, Ridgwell
Sinclair, Yacob, Mulumbu, Berahino
Sess, Anichebe

A starting combination of Sinclair, Berahino, See and Anichebe would at least give us some pace and power. If Yacob is fit then him and Mulmumbu have the legs and discipline to win the percentages in midfield.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Unity

Right, enough of all the talk of Clarke being sacked and getting a replacement in. Our season starts next week at Fulham and the next two games are massive. We all need to get behind the team and give them the confidence to perform. We have the players now. They just need a couple of wins to believe in themselves. As fans we have a job to do as well over the next month or so.

West Bromwich Albion FC / A long overdue rant
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:53:38 PM »
I'm sick to death of this negative crab nonsense at home and I know who has to take all the responsibility - Roy. He's taken a team with an attacking midfield playing progressively in a 4-5-1 with Odemwingie banging them in left, right and centre and over time nutured a conservative, dull and predictable 4-4-2 by taking the pace and movement out of the team and killing the full backs and wingers. It's dire to watch and does not suit the players. If he leaves in summer then I won't be shedding any tears.

Things that used to happen that no longer happen:

1) Our full backs used to play forward and run on behind the opposition.
2) Our midfielders used to run past our forwards.
3) Our main striker was allowed to play on the shoulder and supported in attack.

Now it's all about the shape of our team when out of possession which is basically the midfield tight to the back four and the other two running around. It's predictable and old school. Swansea today pushed their full backs on and had a striker playing in the hole that had the freedom of the pitch to dictate the play. We should have matched them but Roy is an idiot. His tactics work away but self evidently are not working at home - so WHY is he insisting on playing the same way every home game?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Fortune
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:42:06 PM »
I've been watching Albion since 92/93 and I can safely say that Fortune has produced the worst performance of any player that I have ever seen against Wolves home and away. The ineptitude is stagging, he can't even trap a football but is a professional? He must be incredible in training. To think we paid 2.5 million for that! Celtic must be delighted.
