« on: March 24, 2015, 01:08:25 PM »
I refuse to answer that on the grounds it confirms me as a codger.

But seriously Robbo was magnificent in the Navy and white !
His engine was incredible,
he didn't shirk a tackle (to his great cost, 2 broken legs??)
his range of passing was excellent and he
contributed on the goals front too.

IMO pretty much the complete player.

And the baggies drinking team at the time was legendary, (Robbo, Asa, Ally Rob, Len Cantello strangely never saw Willie out with the "team") Four in hand, Joker, Globe, Farriers, Bell, Flash Harry, White house,  they seemed to be everywhere.
you forgot statham always in the four in hand ,saw willie in there many a time always on the pool table (playing) i loved jeff astle he was a big game player also chippy clarke ,so for me best forward Astle best Winger chippy best Player Robson,he had everything hence why is career was so much more prestigious than all the others ,Laurie could have had the same but for injuries and personal problems Big Cyrille never really lived up to his full potential ,what i think we forget is he was very inconsistent if he fancied it there was no stopping him ,if he didnt you never saw him again hence why big things never really happened for him ,but its all about opinions

to me its not a standing thing i went to russia to watch england play the atmosphere by the russians was one of the best i had ever heard and they were all seated the big difference was they could sit anywhere they wanted so you had groups of singers sitting all together at our games now this does not happen as you have to sit where your put but just like the old standing days if you want to sing and shout you get in earlier with your mates and claim a singing spot soon other like minded people do the same ,simple really

Has someone who goes to most away games this does not appeal to me as part of the fun following England is going to some far flung places you would never go to ,but i can see the appeal to the TV etc

i dont get this chris brunt thing Albion fans have to have a go at someone Brunts had a lot of poor games but so as everyone ,the big difference is he doesn't hide ,he always shows for the ball,if someones out of postion, look at the bloke who covers for him, more often than not its Brunt,if someone goes off injured,Brunt steps in there postion.Hes a team player hence whyevery manager we have had hes always one of the first names on the team sheet,he does a lot of the ugly work that goes un noticed ,and just for his assists would always get in my team, and lets be honest someone with a left foot like his who tracked back, never gave the ball away scored great free kicks etc would not be playing for us

there were lots of clubhouse and section 5 lads out but as were all late 40s early 50s we only went for a day out and to watch the match we all drank in cwmbran and caught trains in and as far as i am aware not one off the lads with us was involved in the trouble at the end, from what i saw it was heavy handed stewards starting on a Albion fan for waving a cross of St George and a Cardiff fan tried to remove it off him ,it looked like what you would say normal fans just reacting to stewards assaulting any one in there way has i said we went for a lads jolly up with the Dutch lads and even some Cardiff friends, those days are long gone now we, ve all grown up and just want a day out watching football and having a laugh with like minded people  nothing else

We where on the Yellow double Decker ,we informed the Club the police and Booked a Boozer in eccleshall 15 miles from Stoke,Has we got of the Motorway we were pulled over by Motorbike cop ,who phoned staffs police who came in Two Riot vans ,they kept us there for nearly a hour till they got west Brom Police and a Drugs sniffer dog ,We were told we had been pulled over as we were a Risk Element , We were Filmed had id ,Ticket checks etc ,we were then told we were being taken to a pub were they would let us have a beer for 90 mins if anyone objected we would be served with a section 27 and escorted back to West Brom ,we were taken to the pub less than 500 yards from the one we had booked ,then 90 mins later taken to the ground in a massive Police escort ,were we were then again met by sniffer dogs and taken in the ground ,after the match all the other coaches were let go we were the escorted by riot vans, motorbikes etc right to the Billiard Hall west Bromwich ,No One committed any offence ,No Drugs were found nothing ,Now i have travelled to Russia etc to watch England and never had any thing like this and before anyone says the Police must have had intelligence etc ,we informed them of our plans, this would not happen to any other group in our society ,but we turn a blind eye because were football fans and dont forget its World cup year next year so the Police need to justify there trips out to Brazil  >:(

Right, I'm seriously, seriously tempted to try and get to Brazil next summer and thought I would start a thread about all things Brazil and the world cup.   8)
Any news, views and tips about getting there on a budget would be top of my list of things I'd like to hear.
Followed by what to do and see while there and how the locals might react.  8)
Never travelled in South America so local customs and practices and the like would be usefull to know.  8)
Oh and how to convice the wife it's a good idea too would be helpfull!!!  :P
went there for the friendly a few months back ,Do not be taken in by all the Garbage its a great place to visit ,Just don't go in the Ghettos (as if any ones daft enough to do this) ,Before we went we were told don't wonder off the front etc etc its just the same as any where else in the World if your not a local don't go to areas you don't feel safe in simple really we stayed about 5 blocks back from the copacabana beach area ,so the so called safe areas stretch a few miles back and across ,we also caught a plane £100 to the falls on the Border of Argentina/Paraguay/Brazil ,they are a site to behold we came out of the Brazil side got a Taxi to Paraguay 10 mins had a beer just over the Border (Thats a dodgy place ) he waited for us he then took us to Argentina where we had a fantastic steak and a few hours there ,the people were really friendly ,one Tip (thats if your in Rio) do not book any tourist trips here book them when you get there see a Taxi Firm (your hotel will recommend) and they do much better trips waiting for you as you go to Christ the redeemer and sugarloaf Mountain, etc  ,DON'T listen to the press etc and have a great trip oh and try opedo web site for travel etc

Anelka slowed up the play, was wasteful in possession and often refused the simple pass.

Very poor today and doesn't suit our system. I don't like WM, but on this I agree. Anelka should be dropped.
agree Anelka is a Class act but the system we normally play ie counter attacking football does not suite is style of play when we broke yesterday it went up to Anelka and just stopped ,a great Footballer in the wrong system ,But iam sure it will work out as he can adapt to any style

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: john giles, how is he remembered
« on: September 14, 2013, 08:26:39 AM »
Agreed, he took over a very poor team in decline, and with largely the same players produced a determined, passionate, hard team that won games playing passing football. One of my main memories was that for the first time since beginning to follow Albion in late '66 we started passing the ball out from the back and really using the midfield better than anytime since Bobby Hope left us.

Giles gave us our pride back and in my time one of the greatest single days out ever. Oldham away.

Blooding Statham and Godden, bringing in Mick Martin, Paddy Mulligan and Ray Treacy (we'll over look Geoff Hurst), buying Laurie, wining away 0-2 at Stoke (Decca's debut), thrashing Manchester United, thumping Tottenham...Giles laid the foundations for our mid/late seventies success. Had the board had the courage to back him who knows, we may well have been looking back at thirty plus years of winning trophies now.

Funny old game.

The man should be a legend in West Bromwich, don't let anyone ever kid you he was a footnote.
agree 100% what a player he brought in what was thought of as has beens and second raters but he moulded a team ,went to every game and it was by far the best time of my football following life on a foot note Giles was also a dirty little so and so on the pitch blokes twice his size avoided him
