Your starting XI
« on: December 21, 2013, 05:16:17 PM »
So with Clarke gone, a poor result at home to Hull, and a busy period coming up, who would be in your starting XI? The Squad desparately  needs changing around.

My team:

GK Foster

RB Jones
CB McAuley (Capt)
CB Dawson (I'm sure his passing must be better than Olsson's)
LB Ridgewell (best of a bad bunch)

DM Mulumbu
DM Yacob

RW Amalfitano (Has skill, no doubt about it)
AM Dorrans/Rosenberg (Needs to get some game time)
LW Berahino (Whoever it is should be receiving decent passes, NOT balls being fired AT them or so close to the touch line they can't keep it in)

ST Vydra

With a lot of games coming up we will obviously need to make changes in various positions, but hopefully ones like Brunt, Olsson, Sessegnon and Long will be dropped to make room for some of the other players.

Thoughts?

Long and Sessegnon have to be dropped, Vydra and Berahino have to start. Gera without doubt is the most creative player we have but its unrealistic to think he's going to play 90 minutes game in game out. If Anelka is still alive I think he can do a good job of playing the role behind the striker.

Foster
Jones McAuley Olsson Ridgewell
Yacob Mulumbu
Amalfitano Anelka Berahino
Vydra

As it stands I would go for
Foster
Jones
Mcauley
Olsson/ Dawson starting to think he deserves a chance
Ridgewell know one better than him
Mulumbu
Yacob
Amalifitano
Berahino
Gera
Vydra.

Has anyone seen Dawson as a Left back? I've said before I think Brunt could play the role but after today I'm not sure. Otherwise, I don't think our defence is a huge problem (look at the goal differences of those around us) but I think our lumbering, misfiring forwards and midfield need the pace and variety of our youngsters plus the class Gera brings. So
                                                  Foster

             Jones            McAuley          Olsen                Brunt/Dawson

                                           Yacob

Amalfitano          Mulumbu      Gera (Morrison to come on as he tires)

                                         Berahino
                                                        Vydra

I would not play wingers as such - Bera & Vydra can use the width when required with the other occupying the centre, particularly to the left.

No major changes for me - to get back to winning ways you rely on your solid basis which has brought you success. Messing around with the centre halves or back four as a whole shall only weaken us in my opinion. There are plenty of options in the midfield trio, playing in-front of Yacob and Mulumbu.

                    Foster

Jones McAuley Olsson Ridgewell

          Yacob     Mulumbu

Amalfitano    Sessegnon  Berahino

                  Anichebe

At the moment, that for me is probably our best team on paper. The disappointing aspects are that Amalfitano, Sessegnon and Ridgewell are completely off the boil. Victor Anichebe and Nicolas Anelka must spend all week snogging or kicking the pooh out of each other seen as they are both either injured or carrying the flu at the same time.

Ridgewell is in the side purely because I want a settled back four and that his replacement is just as bad if not worse.

Olson & Brunt out.  Dawson in, Morrison in a forward central position, and I would keep Long.

             Berahino                  Anichebe             Vydra

Back four is okay although Olsen seems to be having a bit of a wobble Ridgewell better than Popov but to be honest Brunt might be a better option I think the problem is in the middle of the park i.e. getting hold of the ball and finding a pass I would try bringing Amalfitano in from the wing and get Berahino & Vydra playing off Anichebe.

I cannot work out an starting XI without having at least one player that I really don't want to see again in an Albion shirt.

We played this outfield team away to Man United, home to Arsenal (Anelka for Anichebe) and away at Stoke. We played very well in all three.

We then messed with the team a bit and haven't been able to recreate it.

  Berahino         Anelka           Vydra

Dispense with 1 up front and have a right go at teams.

To the OP I would not expect to see either of Dorrans or Rosenberg ever to wear the shirt again.

What's your philosophy? Because today's goal was our first for 4 and a half hours, and you've picked 8 defensive players if I include the goal keeper. Just asking?

Could be argued that Jones is our best attacking player at the moment

In what sense, he gets forward a lot but there is very little end product to his roaming?

In the sense that he is actually prepared to take a player on, rather than pass backwards like some are happy to do.
It is not the taking part, but the winning that counts.

And then his cross is blocked or drifts out of play most of the time... Don't get me wrong I think Jones is becoming an excellent player for us and I rate him, but he is a defender and the post I originally made said as much?

before the game is have had brunt & Morrison in the LM and CM positions (not sure who I would havr asked to step aside out of Mulumbu/Yacob) but after today I didn't want either of them nearby to be honest.

Jones, well, I don't think he's too much of a liability defending and looks good going forward

We need someone to hold the ball up to allow our creative midfield to get in the game. We had a lot of success under Roy and Clarke with Fortune holding up the ball which made us play good football. It's no surprise our best performance was at Old Trafford this season.
