Our Most Valuable Players
« on: December 09, 2011, 03:10:31 PM »
Just read a short piece on Football365 on who they thought each Premier League clubs 3 most important players were and for us they had;

WEST BROM
1. Youssuf Mulumbu 2. Shane Long 3. Jonas Olsson
If you haven't seen Mulumbu in action, do yourself a favour and watch the Baggies beast closely next time West Brom grace your screen. Mulumbu gets through all the dirty work and still finds time to get up the pitch and be a goal threat. Talking of goal threats, Long has been an unqualified success that has allowed Roy Hodgson to risk alienating Peter Odemwingie and could be the difference between 10th and 16th this season. The trio is completed by Olsson, who is the glue that just about holds the West Brom defence together.

What would your top 3 be and why? Personally I can't argue with their assessment, but would have Foster a really close 4th for the confidence he gives me in pretty much every game bar a couple of unpunished errors.

Sorry but you cant dismiss Odemwingie, he scored 15 in his debut season and for me he is our most valuable asset when he gets his confidence/ form back and is injury free he will play a major part in our season, closely followed by the 3 mentioned above.

completely agree with the three choices and the reasoning. (that is, since mulumbu's return to form, which has been since the minute he came on against arsenal. before that this season, he was a shadow of last season's mulumbu).

I think we would suffer more without the likes of Olsson

Absolutely spot on for once. I would go 1. Mulumbu 2. Jonas and 3. Long but that is just being picky  ;D
Gera, Gera, Gera

I would agree with those three, with Pete at number four.

On form and under Roy's system of play, I'd say probably those three too, though Mulumbu did have a questionable start to the season.

Still, players often drop in and out of favour.  Long has had a very good start, no doubt,  but in the grand scheme of things it's still early days.  I hope he stays good, but he wouldn't be the first striker to hit the ground running then fall away for part of the season.  Roy himself has stated that it may well get much harder for him.  Look at Pete,  he provided a great assist and goal return last season, now he's seen by several as dispensable.

In terms of monatary value:

Isn't Pete our highest paid player?  I guess in the summer he was seen as our most valuable asset in some ways by rewarding him higher pay than anyone else in the squad.

With age on his side, strikers at a premium, I'd guess that Long would probably fetch the biggest transfer fee.
