Ron Atkinson
« on: July 27, 2023, 09:02:13 PM »
Wasn't sure were to post.

Ron appeared on Farage GB News tonight and during the conversation he mentioned us 2 or 3 times and unsurprisingly said that our great team of 79-81 was better than the Man U team he left us for.

Unsurprisingly indeed........ it was better than the team he left us for. And if I remember correctly there were reports at the time that he wanted to add Cyrille to it as well.

Ronnie Allen was only manager for about 6 months the first time round and a season the second time around. It could be argued that Allen was just carrying on the good work started by Johnny Giles.

A long time ago but R Allen did buy Cyrille in fact the story goes if the club wouldn't pay the 5K he would pay it himself to buy Cyrille.
I believe he also signed Laurie they all gained from having the likes of Statham and Robson just breaking through.

Think Giles signed Godden, he joined 76/77ish, sure it wasn't Atkinson though. I remember Batson being his first signing.

He also signed Ian Benjamin which was a massive failure

Yes you are right , Godden was signed by Giles (Feb/Mar 77) about a year before Atkinson joined.

and Batson, Godden, Barnes, Owen.
Batson he worked with at Cambridge
Godden I don't recollect although in that team he was the weak link.
Barnes top player if a bit inconsistant a replacement for the great Laurie.
Owen again a good player but no Bryan Robson.

Smith signed Maresco on a free who we then sold for a few quid enabling Megson to rebuid the team.

I remember seeing Denis Smith at a book signing in the club shop. He was sitting at a table with a pile of books, in a full shop, with not a soul wanting a signature
