--- Quote from: NJS on August 19, 2024, 08:34:12 AM ---I think some fans lack all sense of proportion most of the time.

I also think there is a psychological bias that if you spend a lot of money on a player he must be good whereas if you pick a player from the likes of Barnsley he can't be any good.

Styles had a great season for Barnsley three years ago. I remember commentators raving about him. However, the last three years seem to have seen him stagnate. He was sent out on loan to both Millwall and Sunderland where he failed to shine at Championship level although injuries had an affect on this. Barnsley fans are now fairly indifferent to him. Many say he has potential but often goes unnoticed in matches. Some question his attitude and claim that he’s not happy unless he is played in his preferred CM position. They feel that he thinks he is better than the club but question his ability beyond League 1. I know fans can be wrong but there are few supporters who have watched him in the last three years from Barnsley, Millwall or Sunderland that believe he is good enough to be in a top Championship team.

Callum Styles close says Express and Star.

Standaman:
I think Styles is a versatile player much appreciated by coaches but easily overlooked by fans. His versatility gets him into the squad but the lack of regular place in the starting XI limits his game time and has hampered his development.

As things stand nothing in this move suggests that will change here.

Barnsley fans happy to see him go, but I think that's not a reflection on his ability.
I'm sure that if a player made it clear he wasn't happy playing for West Brom, we wouldn't be exactly falling over ourselves to say how good he is. I liken it to the Mickey Johnston vs Celtic fans situation.
