Really? I had no idea thanks for that info Baggies.

When he said cricket player i was expecting him to be on 100k or something, i know he wouldnt be on footballers wages but i assumed he'd be on a few grand a week.

Wages in county cricket are based at 27.5k.

Though that has been reduced to 24k for new contracts covering the 2021 season.

OHD recently signed a new deal with the bears taking him to 2023.

He’s 6ft 8.

His record over the last two seasons is not to be sniffed at with 69 wickets at an average of 23.95  :D

Thats not a lot at all really for a professional in my eyes. I know cricket is not at footballs level but still.

6'8" sounds about right, he had duck through the doors i remember that  ;D  Thoroughly nice guy as well.

Can't imagine a man that size running at me at my crease!

Snooker - does it have a point? Is it a sport?

Surprised this wasn't a cue for an impassioned defence of snooker as a sport.....

Clearly snooker is not popular on this board and I think watching paint dry would raise my pulse more

Love snooker myself; sure isn't that what kicked this whole thread off.
Looks like my main guy left; Mark Williams is being made short-shrift of by the imperious not much of a jester Mark Selby. Guess I may have to switch to rooting for the winners of this morning's quarters should Williams not pull of a comeback.

I've been reading about the NFL draft which is currently on going and I'm never not amazed by how sport in the US works.

The number 1 draft pick is a 21 year old QB called Trevor Lawrence. The talk is that while QB draft picks can be hard to forecast if they will be successful or not, every few years a John Elway or Peyton Manning comes along where there is just no question that they are going to be a top, top player. Lawrence is apparantly one of those sort of players - near guaranteed to be the best player in the NFL.

I find American sports fans support of junior level sport a bit odd, and Lawrence reminds me of that. As a 12 year old, there were YouTube compilations and press interest in Lawrence due to his incredible talents in junior level American football. As a 16 year old at High School, his (very long) hair had it's own fan parody twitter account and 5000 people were turning up every week to watch him represent the small community he was from's High School team. At college, he was a national sports star already for Clemson, South Carolina.

If we were in the USA, chances our people from West Bromwich wouldn't support an NFL team, but would instead support the local college side, while in a small town (say Wednesbury), you would support a team of 16 year olds at the local high school. Really bizarre.

I nearly fell asleep watching Selby. Top player, but he is using gamesmanship to perfection. I would have loved seeing him play Alex Higgins because "warfare" would have taken place. Verbally and possibly physically.

Baggies, it’s funny you mention that because my screenname SC baggies, is because I’m from South Carolina and yes I attended Clemson. I grew up 15 mins from the campus and attending all the sporting events there, from football to basketball to baseball to tennis and more. It’s really a deep community thing that’s ingrained in states without pro sports teams.

Clemson’s stadium for football holds like 83,000 and many college stadiums are even larger than that. The atmospheres and passion are usually better than the more corporate feeling NFL. (Kinda like the big 6 in the PL).

Yeah I've gathered the support for college and high school teams is at it's peak in places (or "markets") without a pro sports side. I used to listen to the podcast version of the ESPN show "around the horn" and around March, all they talked about seemed to be College Basketball.

Did you get a chance to see much of Lawrence for Clemson the last few years? Is he as special as they are saying?

There was another ‘cert’ after Elway and Manning. A player called Andrew Luck who at the time was a better ranked prospect than Lawrence is now, but his pro career didn’t get anywhere near the heights predicted.

The high school / college adulation is quite bizarre though I completely agree.

They did mention Luck, although it doesn't seem he flopped - his body just stopped working. In between the various injuries, wasn't he often top of different ranking metrics for TD's? Made Pro Bowl as well.

Yeah I don’t think Luck flopped as such but he certainly didn’t have the superstar career he was ‘destined’ to have. Injuries do seem to have played a part in his career though, but they do for many nfl players. The average career is something silly like 3 years.

Three years in the NFL playing 12 games a season, 10m in the bank and retiring by 25 as an average draft pick sounds ok to me though!  Luck probably made 50m plus.

I'll keep these going.  ;)

Bank Holiday weekend league and cup double. Won by 70 odd runs yesterday in the league, yours truly 3 for 22 off 10; then a stonking 230 run win over a team a division above us today in the cup. Nice Michelle for Jacko (5 for 7).

A pleasing weekend. Feet up tomorrow.

It’s a cricketing term used by the Aussies mainly now I think

When you claim five wickets in an innings it’s known as a 5-fer.

There was an actress called Michelle Pfeiffer and so it’s a play on words.

A nice Michelle (meaning 5-fer/pfeiffer)  :D
