Bad Bartley tonight.

Did not seem interested. Struggled to run and then once his 'flight landing steward' arms come out, you know his race is run.

Waving and pointing here there and everywhere. Screaming at everyone anywhere near him while doing little himself.

That weak clearance at the end to them got the chance to score.

He's more than likely triggered his extension though, so we're stuck with him.

Another one I can’t wait to see the back of. Years of constant failure rewarded with new contract extensions, the Lai legacy.

On the whole he’s been great for us at this level, and is vital to the team. If you want to point the finger at individuals for the goals conceded tonight then you should be posting about Holgate and Griffiths.

Holgate is just a poor centre half
Do we cut Griffiths some slack because of 4 or 5 excellent saves and one howler ?

I would say Bartley is the one constant in the defence that has proved problematic over the years !

At the game on Saturday, I commented to my daughter on how many of our team I never wanted to see in an Albion shirt again, Bartley being top of that list. Admittedly i have never forgiven for for perhaps the most embarrassing display I have seen by an Albion centre half at Sheffield Wednesday early in his time here only saved by a sublime Harvey Barnes masterclass. There is something about him too I find really unlikeable. Good riddance and take Swift, Grady, Holgate, Wallace, Grant and Furlong with you too.

Starting to get exposed in a more open style but then again so so will all the defenders as Mowbray's teams rarely keep clean sheets.

You refer to a problem yet do not appreciate the actual stats.

We have the 5th best defensive record in the league so far this season. That’s despite repeated goalkeeping errors since Palmer was sold. Our first choice back four is one of the best at this level. The backup players not so.

I think its time we try and move him on. Taylor should be in his position next season.

Fixed that for you. It was two clearances in a row he failed to get further than much outside the area.

It seems like we keep ending up in the same place where we're stuck with him.

Move him on ASAP. Start Taylor and Heggem next to each other next year and look for a back up centre half in the summer window.

I don't think he or our defence have been that bad this season - with an exception to Mason Holgate.

We have reached the point where its coming to the end of the road here though. The club really needs to make a decision on Caleb Taylor sooner rather than later.

Exactly. Heggem & Bartley have been very good together. Furlong & Styles have also played well on the whole.

I think the likes of Bartley are one of the reasons we are stuck in the championship, we keep rewarding mediocre players.

Three of our senior defenders (Bartley, Furlong and Ajayi) are the same ones that got us promoted under Bilic, they are all steady at championship level with Furlong showing signs of improvement under Corberan.

The problem with Bartley is he has a lot of authority and although Wallace is captain, Bartley is in charge, i was told by more than one person that he has a very high opinion of himself and that if he is having a bad day then everyone around him is made to suffer.

I think that shows on the pitch when we are having a bad time, a lot of shrugging shoulders and finger pointing and outstretched arms, we tried to get rid of one of Bartley, Kipre and Ayaji the summer before last but nobody wanted them (or wouldnt pay their wages) so Corberan laid the law down and said he had to change his attitude and to be fair he did and had a good season last year.

That said we should never of offered him a new deal (nor Mowatt, Corberan also didnt want either to get new deals) and due to games he has played we will be stuck with him another year.

He has been okay this season, until xmas the defence in general was okay because ww were a more defensive minded team and coached that way, however as much as the Scouts deserve credit for Price and Heggam and hopefully Bany and Diakite, its a negative that they couldnt find a younger cheaper better version of both Bartley and Mowatt as both really arent anything special.

Championship career players who werent going to get any better and they got new contracts and form the spine of our team, whilst we continue to reward that sort of level then we wont progress massively.

They arent the only two, we have to be releasing Ajayi, Swift and Diangana in the summer as again they arent great players at this level and arent going to get better and i would be looking to see if we can strike some deal with Bartley to pay him a sum and give him chance to get a two year deal elsewhere.

The place needs a freshen up both on and off the pitch.

Totally illogical to argue the defence, the successful part of the team is somehow holding the team back.

We are “stuck in the championship” because only three sides from twenty four can get promoted, there are better teams with bigger squads and budgets and we have no divine right to not be “stuck in the championship”. More specifically, we have only scored 49 goals in 41 games - which is the problem. The defence is one of the best in the league, which is the only reason we are still close to the last play off spot.

It was at the start of the season but not now , we seem incapable for one reason or another of keeping a clean sheet . For those longing for those early season days the defence was
Palmer
Furlong
Bartley
Ajayi
Heggem

Bartley and Mowatt were both out of contract in the summer, neither received one offer between them from a championship team or above, think that says a lot.

We dont have a divine right to be promoted, i have never thought we would be because we have an average squad but thats what you get when you offer new deals to a Bartley who is 34 and Mowatt close to 30 (i think) they have never been anything other than average to decent championship players their whole career.

Keep rewardind players of that level who are not going to improve, we will remain a championship team.

Announced that he has now triggered another year here.

https://www.wba.co.uk/news/kyle-bartley-contract-extension-clause-activated

"Kyle Bartley has extended his stay at The Hawthorns to the summer of 2026 after the activation of an appearance-related clause in his existing Albion contract.

The experienced centre-half has played a leading role for the Baggies in his seven years at The Hawthorns.

Bartley has made 228 appearances for Albion, scoring 15 goals, since arriving from Swansea City in July 2018."

27 appearances. Roughly 60% of games in a full season.  At least it was a harder target than the 9 games Gourlay set him.

It doesn't matter how many resources you have.

Generally, a good servant of the club. Has his moments of madness but if he didn't, he would be playing for a team in the prem.

Expected this and its covers a position we’d need to replace if he were to go in the summer.

Although I hope he takes a less prominent role in the team next season in favour of Caleb Taylor.

Assuming Holgate goes when his loan ends we will only have 4 centre backs including Taylor, that is the least we can run on so by keeping Bartley we are saving a fee or a loan for a CB. This is assuming Ajayi stays
