Have Tottenham ruined our season ?
« on: September 04, 2015, 09:46:21 AM »
But dramatic I know but:

It's come to light they were in discussions with us for 4 MONTHS about berahino so it's safe to say we probably thought he was off and that we could plan around that.
As it became clear they would put bids in I'm sure peace would think well , he's going to go but I'm going to wait until I get top dollar then he can go.

Had he gone then we could have got potentially Austin/Phillips Etc in.
It may have been a reason we didn't sign sako (2 goals in 2 games for palace) as we thought something better (Phillips) was coming our way.

With those ridiculous offers from Spurs we couldn't get the deal done, haven't signed Phillips and potentially missed out on others.

Whenever we are playing badly, just remember -
Paul Chrichton,Neil Parsley, Andy Mcdermott, Scott Darton, Winston White,Mark Angel, Fabian DeFreitas, Paul Williams......now, do you feel better?

Basically flawed premise that real football is like fantasy football and everything hinges on who you get in the window, it does not. So almost whatever happens does not ruin our season because we don't know how the players we have got in will turn out let alone the players we might have got in.

I will say that Spurs have left a bit of a mess behind because of their botched attempt to sign Saido. Equally I think the club might have hoped for a club a little bit less low rent than Spurs to come in for Saido given that it could be argued that all the top teams could be in the market for a striker.

I was of the opinion that we should only sell Saido for top dollar and if the squad could be transformed with the money £5m (which was all that was guaranteed) would not have got us Phillips let alone anyone else. That is a no brainer but obliviously we have a very unhappy player and a lot of work to do to turn the situation around but we cannot afford to let clubs like Spurs bully us into taking bad deals for our best players.

No, this will disappear from the spotlight in a few weeks (to re-appear in Jan admittedly) the matches will be coming thick and fast after the intl break. More likely to impact on our season is lack of cover at left back IMO.

Totally agree.

They did it last year with Southampton and the same again this year with Southampton and us. Neither time did they manage to buy the player aswell.

I agree a fine or a transfer embargo should be handed out to clubs like Spurs for doing what they do.

I have to say that it's business, and today's football is an unscrupulous industry. Levy did what he had to do for his team, the same that Peace would do on behalf of his club.

If a queue of teams had come in for Berahino then it would have been different, they didn't, so maybe the figure of £25million is a dream, and Saido's real value is considerably less.

Agree with you but it would be very hard to prove that Spurs have done anything underhand. be hard to prove that they leaked stories to the press to unsettle the player.

As labaggies says it's business.

I believe that Tottenham have helped to adversely affect our opening to the season, but there are loads of game's to play so the important factor for me is how we as a club react to this short term adversity.

Regarding the rumoured four months of negotiations I cannot help but remember that Peace said contact was first made in early August. So who was Levy negotiating with if not the club? While I realise it goes on with at least the majority of clubs, this wreaks of an inadvertant public admission of an illegal approach, which I suppose is what Pulis and Peace refer to as the 'unsettling' of a player.
It doesn't matter how many resources you have.

Actually i think between JP and Adebayour, its more likely Spuds season is ruined than ours !

It would only take an injury to Kane (I do not wish this on the lad) and they are scuppered !

I am not best pleased with the way Levy and some of the Spurs fans have wound up SB to the point of self destruction. But I think you make a very good point there.  8)

I don't say they have ruined our season, we can do that ourselves, but I would imagine that any further transfer business in the near future between the two clubs could be difficult if at all possible.
Be nice when we play them at home if we all held up a few £20 notes and waved them at the spuds.

Have they ruined it?
We beat Stoke without him.
It has forced TP's hand to play without him and show how we can attack minus Berahino.

Think Peace meant he spoke to Levy personally for the first time in August..negotiations would have been ongoing between Spurs and us probably through Garlick or whoever with Peace being notified of events.

No it's not ruined. Saido really doesn't have any option other than to knuckle back down. In games when we play one up top, he now has genuine competition in Rondon who does look like a genuine, hard working focal point who will be doing his best to get on the end of things.

Thats true but we were playing 9 men for over half the game.

He's South Korean and from what I've heard he's more of a winger-come-striker. They also signed that N'Jie from France. Think he's in the same mould as Son Heung-min

Tottenham haven't done much wrong in my eyes, and have instead exposed Berahino as the issue here.
They have always gone after players and always will. Last year it was Schnederlein who acted professionally and got on with it, as is Wanyama this season.
These players have been approached no differently to Berahino, but have reacted in a more adult way.

I think that while Saido is still an Albion player, there was always a danger that the season would be ruined in some sense whether it be Spurs or anyone else. With Saido's track record for past misdemeanours, it is always going to be the case that a potential buyer will insist on some form of incentive related payment structure rather than the full whack up front, no club would take that bigger risk on him. Like it or not,the Albion and JP have to accept this will be the case with whoever comes in for him. Saido was always going to react like this when told he couldn't leave, I for one could see this coming. If it wasn't Spurs it would have been someone else.

Spuds have ruined our season only if we let them. We had a decent transfer window and now need to settle the side down and get some points on the board
A weaker squad than this got us to mid table last year and can easily achieve that again

We didn't sign Phillips as we weren't prepared to pay what QPR wanted. With Sako I would guess he turned us down. We can't blame Spurs for things that were in our control. You can't blame them for the way Berahino acted either. Something like this was always bound to happen if you leave your business to the last minute.
