West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Josh Maja joins Albion

Terrible news. We now have a big problem. Dike is nowhere near ready to come back (if indeed he ever will be), Cole is nowhere near good enough, and neither Grant or Wallace are really suited to the role. The only solution I can see is to urgently try to find someone on loan for the rest of the season. This starkly brings into focus just how dependent we have been on Maja this season.

Caleb Taylor is either ready now or he will never be. More League 1 football will just turn him into a league 1 footballer. Great for him because that is a steady career, maybe not one he dreamt of but better than most kids that enter the game full time at 16.

He has a pathway into the first team for remainder of this season he will pick up minutes from the bench and on rotation. Ajayi and Holgate are both likely to leave the club and he will take their minutes and ultimately replace Bartley as he develops. It it is either that scenario or he fails is replaced in the squad and moves on.
I don't think that's the case at all. He is just about to turn 22, which is still quite young for a centre back. He has the remainder of this season to continue getting experience at this level - as you say, he's likely to get minutes during the rest of this season. Then hopefully he will be ready to challenge for a regular spot at the beginning of next season. I would say next Christmas time is a more realistic time to assess whether or not he is going to make the grade.

Exactly, that NO winning promotion from league one, does not make you a player good enough for the championship, as random example off the top of my head Johnson Clark Harris I think his name was, who scored loads in the third tier for the posh and not so many above.

I totally agree with the forwarding planning part, but it doesn't mean we play players who aren't good enough yet just because they are one of our own.

We all want our own to do well with us, but we can't just play them if they aren't good enough yet.
On what evidence have you decided that he isn't good enough yet?

Well he's been back a few days, isn't used to playing with the others in the team, was playing against a high flying Premier League side, is partnered with someone who isn't very good at playing in the middle of the defence, and scores a good goal. But some of you are writing him off already !!! Quite unbelievable tbh.

5
I was hoping for a narrower defeat when I saw the teams but playing Racic, mowatt and swift in midfield is a disaster waiting to happen at any level none of them can run or tackle
When you add Holgate and Grady to those that’s half a team who frankly would struggle in the championship so it was no surprise we were overrun so often
Those 5 along with Wallace,Cole ,Ajayi and Bartley need releasing end of the season
But saying that I wouldn’t trust Pearce to replace them how he still keeps his job is another thing
We've just given him a new contract. Just saying.

6
I can't believe I have just read that last line.

Stay down here with the risk of possibly going down with a Bruce/Rooney type manager or promotion?

Let's stay down and be happy when the opposition level it in injury time.

First a Christian Grossesque appointment likely, and now this.

Football is about winning matches and promotion comes with that, if you can't take the defeats in a higher division then you have totally forgotten what football is about and how we did under God Megaton.

Yes, that's very true. The only problem is that once promotion is gained, the winning matches bit disappears. I think we need to have built a much stronger squad before we can begin to hope to compete in the PL. It's going to take a while I'm afraid, so we just have to be patient and hope our rebuild as a club goes according to plan.

It wasn't unexpected to be honest. It doesn't really mean much in the bigger scheme of things - the FA cup is just a meaningless diversion these days. The gulf in class is huge and it wasn't only our game where that became really obvious. QPR lost 6-2, Norwich lost 0-4, against sides below Bournemouth in the PL, so we are not alone in feeling a bit despondent. Let's focus on the new era, which starts as soon as the new coach is announced, and come next season we will have got rid of some of the poorer players and can start to build a new side.

That just backs up my point further that we have watched pure dross for a long time and a change In style is long overdue
You literally made a point in your original post that we had been watching dross for the last 2 years, which was the period that Carlos Corberan was here. My reply was pointing out that previous to that was much, much worse. Now you have moved the goalposts to try and suggest you meant for a long time  ;D

Happy with this. Another proper coach. Might take him a few games to settle in, but I have a good feeling for the future

Yeah they love hinting at anything really.

Here's a more reasoned version, from someone (who in his bio) apparently also works for Talksport from time to time

Charlie Haffenden
@JournoHaff

Told West Brom spoke to Tony Mowbray over vacant managerial position this week. He was flattered but feels it wasn’t the right time due to his recent health concerns. #WBA have interviewed several alternatives.
Yeah, that's similar to the thing I read, but I couldn't find the link. Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was strange, because I've never heard Tony Mowbray say anything disrespectful about our club.

Alex Crook ??🎙
@alex_crook

Looking like Raphael Wicky will be the new #WBA boss. As well as Rene Hake, I understand the Baggies also spoke to former manager Tony Mowbray but he did not see this as the right job to return to @talkSPORT#

Thanks Tony!

Hopefully his health improves in all seriousness.
It's Talk *****!! I think the actual reason that I saw originally posted was that because of his health, he didn't think now was the right time to take up a new post, period. The implication that TS have put on it that he didn't much like us is just their usual nonsense.

Dyche is above us whether people like it or not. For me we have watched rubbish football for the last 2 years and I'd like a level of entertainment now. Dyche is good if you want stability but I'd question if he has the hunger for a promotion push he hasn't managed in this league for a while now
Really? It was good before that then? You enjoyed the entertaining football under Bruce, or Ismael, or maybe big Sam? The well used phrase "Be careful what you wish for" springs to mind. Personally, I hope whoever we appoint keeps the good organisation and 50% win ratio we were achieving under CC. I sincerely hope we don't go back to the winning every 4 matches we achieved under Bruce, or the 15% win ratio under Allardyce, but each to their own I guess.

The issue with that, is we can only judge a manager after 10+ games, maybe even more to account for "it not being their squad", or "they need time to have the players adapt" or whatever else you (not actually you) want to say depending on if you are pro or anti the new person.

Football is chaotic and so you have to have good processes in place, and acknowledge sometimes even when you do everything right, it goes wrong. But if you have the correct processes then hopefully you give yourself the best chance of things going right.

I would argue if we take too long then it suggests a problem in the decision-making process. Either we were unprepared for CC going, or we are being indecisive, or there is an internal power-struggle between Nestor and Pearce.
I'm willing to bet that there will be people on here who start to judge before that. But it's all a bit of a pointless discussion at the moment. It takes as long as it takes and we'll know the choice fairly soon I'm sure (I anticipate the person watching the cup game on Saturday). In the meantime, there's absolutely zilch that any of us can do to speed things up, so really no point in any of us getting our knickers in a twist.

You would think that Hake would be the underdog of the 3 that have been/are being interviewed

It's clear he was signed as cover.

Last season Asante was our loan striker with Dike injured, this season it's Maja with Dike injured. So they decided to bring in Cole as cheap cover and if the worst case scenario happened with Maja getting injured.

Thankfully he's on low wages and it was only a 2 year deal. Personally I think they will get rid of Dike in the summer and get another striker with Maja (or sell him and get 2 new first choice strikers in). At this point I think they're try and loan Cole to somewhere like Scotland or League 1.
There isn't anywhere like Scotland  ;D

Not sure you can call the introductions of Fellows, Swift, Diangana & Mowatt as defending anything.

The way some have spoken about the substitutions you could be mistaken for thinking we brought on Bartley, Taylor and Frabotta.

We bossed that game from start to finish and Swansea created very little. One lapse in concentration has cost us. We should really be pointing fingers at our forward players for being so wasteful.
Absolutely this. It occasionally occurs to me, without pointing at anyone in particular, that some people find it difficult to see the positives whenever we don't win convincingly. If it wasn't for the one lapse in concentration at the end, it would have been a very good performance. One of our substitutes did what we hadn't managed for over an hour (despite dominating) and scored a goal.

We were the better side for most of the game, so a little bit disappointing to lose a goal so late, but these things happen. Agree with the comments about Cole and Swift - both offered nothing for the time they were on the pitch. But (and I realise that this flies in the face of some of the comments above) I thought Wallace played very well overall. Yes, he's lost a bit of pace, but he showed  good positional awareness, helped out in defence, and was involved in a few of our better breaks, as well as generally working his socks off; no complaints from me today about his performance.

Even though he's still young for a centre half, I'm convinced that he will be one of our first choices next season and hopefully before then. A very talented player.

I think there also needs to be an adjustment/consideration purely for the volume of ins/outs?
Not many teams do that amount of business and have a majority of success …I don’t think .
I didn't see much evidence of you factoring this into your assessment of Carlos Corberan's performance during his tenure. You're quite right that it should be though, just surprising that you've waited until  now to do so.

Saw a comment saying Wayne Rooney was at our game tonight in the director’s box. Please don’t tell me he’s going to be our new manager???

Apart from the subs and the second half drop off, it’s a great result and puts us back in the top 6. Cannot wait to watch the highlights and Andy Johnson’s reactions to the goals!  :D
That isn't even funny !!
Good performance from everyone, especially first half. MJ back to his best, he's a complete menace.

Good to see Plymouth Argyle (note the revived name) getting the no manager bounce by fighting back for a deserved draw.

Rooney is reportedly in line for a job as football pundit. I hope he gets elocution lessons first. I can never understand a word he says 🤪
It's erm not that erm difficult. If the erm Euros were anything to erm go by, he's erm about as good an erm pundit as he is erm manager.

To be honest, I've almost completely given up on DD making any real contribution to our cause again. Unfortunately, he is just too injury prone and I can't see that changing. Even if (and it's a giant if) he could stay fit for a few months, it will take him ages to get up to the right level to be match ready after being out for so long. It's a real shame, but I think he is done.

3) both of the above ?
Nah. You can have Carlos didn't like him because he isn't very good, if you want to though - that can be option 3.
