I’d like to see DM make tweaks. He changed brunt from centre mid, will he be brave to change back 3?

                 Johnstone

     Dawson.   Tosin.      Brunt

Phillips.     Livermore Barry.     Gibbs

                       Barnes

            Jrod.             Gayle

Just feel brunt is a player who can play from he back. He’s got ability to pick a long range ball over the stop for Gayle to use his pace too. His season at left back will help him therrr

You want Brunt at centre back? Really?

Left side of a back 3 yes.

Imagine the shock of wolves fans when nuno put midfielder Conor coady at the back. Reason being he was most comfortable on the ball.

But Brunt cannot defend at all. The thought of him standing there dangling his leg out sends shivers down my spine. He may be like Beckenbaur there but it's not for me.

The difference with the wolves reference is that Coady was primarily a defensive midfielder anyway so wasn't too different to what his game is about.

Brunt isn't a centre midfielder and certainly isn't a centre back. I would rather see us play Barry there IF WE HAD to play a centre mid there.

I would look to stick with the same team that started last night, potentially changing Field for Barry depending on how he recovers. (2 games in a short period might be too much for the veteran).

Much the same as Bartley fills me with dread with rash challenges and shirt pulling. I’d be open to field or Barry in there . Just someone calm on the ball

I would go with the same 11 that started against Bristol City. We won, it was exciting and, last but not least the defensive 3 need the practice to improve their distribution ;)
I would though like to see a match that does not include the certainty of HRK coming on as sub and doing nothing. If circumstances allow, bring another of the kids on please Darren!

No way Barry is far better in there. Brunt is not a central midfielder.

I believe 99.9% of the fan base would concur that Dave does not know what he is doing if he reverted back to Brunt in centre mid.

Plus, I seriously enjoyed your hissy fit last night, so it is worth leaving Brunt out again for that alone.

Centre backs getting us in trouble again. Brunt's fault for not showing though surely...

See Barry's range of passing has sorted everything out...

Midfielders fault  :D

No but it's clearly not the fault of the midfield despite Brunt being blamed for the entire seasons ills.

All sound like astute observations from the first 20 minutes of the match to be honest...

Not really sure Barry was any better or any worse than Brunt has been in there.
For large parts of the game our midfield were overrun. However think be harsh to change the winning team.
60 mins out of Barry and get field on. As somebody else posted be nice to not see the obligatory hrk sub especially if it's for Gayle who is a great outlet for us.

Be nice to follow up the Bristol game with another 3 points takes the pressure off us for the following away game. Think a few tweaks will be seen in this game/ palace in the cup. No way Barry is playing more than a hour in each surely if he even plays both. Be tempted to let Gibbs play one game Townsend the other (Gibbs injury record worse than Darren andertons) I also think we need to get Phillips some rest because if he gets injured we are up the creek without a paddle- if we are going to see hrk come on I would like it right side to rest Phillips

QPR beat them 2-0 tonight so that means we will win 9-1.

In all seriousness, anything but 3 points here is a disappointment. If we are to mount a serious promotion push then we need to string a winning run together and with our next few games being; Millwall, PNE, Wednesday, Reading and Wigan ... we have a good chance to build some momentum, on the back of a great win against an in-form Bristol.

I don't expect our defence to have fixed up, but with our attacking threat, I'd like to think we will have too much for Millwall.

Would like to see Barry continue in midfield and depending on how the game goes, as Beechy says, give him a rest  - ideally bringing Field on around the 60 min mark. I wouldn't be against Tosin coming in for Bartley, but I can't see Big Dave making that call.

Our performance against Bristol was better than the shambles at Blues, so hopefully we can continue to build with a good performance here on Saturday. A win and a clean sheet would be a dream.

Wasn't Gibbs missing on Tuesday through illness rather than injury?
That said I do agree play Gibbs on Saturday if fit and Townsend in the cup game

it was the Blues game last Friday that Gibbs missed through illness.

Watching the EFL highlights show last night I thought Millwall were abysmal, they lacked a lot but mostly heart. Neil Harris has said that it won't happen again so we may see a Millwall side fired up and trying to close us down, especially the back 3. I do think we will be too strong for them.

Like others have said I'd be tempted to drop Bartley for Adabarioyo and I'd start Barry with Field coming on for the last 30 mins if need be.

Our next 2 league games would be good chances of getting clean sheets as both Millwall and Preston are in poor runs of form.

I'm going back in time now.
I know you guys will help my memory.
I remember taking my son to his first Albion game.
We sat in the seats in the old stand before the new stand was built.
I thought it would be an exciting match for him,I think it was the second game of a two legged and we had lost the first one about 3/4 nil?
It was against I think Millwall?
Anyway their fans went crazy rioting etc.
My boy was terrified and hes never been to the Albion again.
He got into rugby instead.
Incidentally,he was a junior throstle and has fond memories of Cyrille and co at the club meetings he went to.
Memories eh?

This has all the makings of a bananaskin if we don't get properly up for it, or think we can waltz through them from minute one.  Tricky fixture list after the international break, need points on the board, disco football only if we get a couple of goals ahead.

Yeah I was only on about this the other day to my lad.
I seem to remember them jumping out of the seats. They were in the Rainbow, towards the Smethwick. Seem to remember they were tooled up and jumped on top of the executive boxes that used to be there.
Happy days eh?  :o

Think we could be looking near to 23,000 overall which isn't too bad to be honest.

On another note I sit right next to the millennium corner, got a feeling its going to be full of kids in their new Stone Island coat Saturday who cant wait to go to school Monday to tell their mates they were giving it loads to Millwall  ;D  ;D

Although if that's what it takes to get more bums on seats it wont bother me lol.

My thoughts too. Millwall have struggled to muster 200 never mind 2,000 for some games at The Hawthorns over the last 30 years so for them to have sold that amount for Saturday tells it's own story. Plenty of their old heads and wannabe's will be out for this one.

They rarely take over 1000 away thesedays so it's going to be interesting.

What I will say is this: if they think they can bully us like they've done to clubs like Rotherham, they'll be in for a bit of a shock. Not condoning or glorifying any possible trouble, just saying.

That Rotherham game sprung to mind to me too, they had similar large numbers travelling that day too compared to their usual rubbish turnout. The Smethwick could well be a bit lively.

Given the fact that Darren Moore has chosen Gareth Barry in midfield to replace Brunty I'd go with him again for the moment as he's in possession of the shirt and has done nothing to warrant it been taken off him. I would definitely replace him with Sam Field after an hour or so though. Barry played most of the game on Tuesday and at his age I wouldn't be asking him to play ninety minutes four days later.

The only other change I'd make is Adarabioyo for Bartley particularly given it's Millwall we are up against. Steve Morison is a wily old fox and will pin himself against Bartley who will be pulling his shirt and grappling with him. Bartley is a penalty waiting to happen in this game.

                                                Johnstone

                       Adarabioyo         Dawson              Hegazi

Although I'm surprised at the amount Millwall have sold I think it's more to do with having not played us for a good while and we've just come down from the Premier League. This will be a big game to them.

All their fans travelling will be STH's or members and known to the club, it's not like back in the day. I doubt there'll be any bother.

As stated previously Brunt returns after his rest on Tuesday, Bartley must surely get a day off, and I'd bring in Hoolahan for Rodriguez, I'm assuming Morrison is still carrying a knock.

I would like to give some positive feedback on Johnstone, we lost one of the top keepers in the country and the young lad has taken the position and is showing a LOT of potential, some nervous moments, but, he is behind a defensive unit which is allowing too many opportunities to the opposition and is still looking like an asset, plus a good great penalty save ratio.

Keep it up son a really solid start in my opinion.

Won’t be any surprise if DM brings Brunt back in.

It says 'could be rested' so it's purely speculation which we are already aware of - there's no reason to announce any decisions in advance anyway.

We all knew it was true, just a part of us hoped Darren actually had a clue what he was doing and could see the glaring weakness all season. Clearly not.

Well still win comfortably today but for all future away games we still have the same problem

No Burke on the bench again. He earnt a big move playing in this division, surely he deserves a chance.

Mears, Hoolahan and Barry on the bench seems very shortsighted to me. It’s Millwall at home fgs. Would like Big Dave to be braver and trust the first 11 to get the job done.

With that bench has the average age of our match day squad actually got any younger?

Pretty rubbish first half performance. Played at walking pace with the ball. Back three passing it between themselves. Very little play in the Millwall box. Brunt / Livermore not as effective as Barry was. One plus point we have defended alright. Although Millwall not as attacking as Bristol City. We look devoid of ideas on the ball to play through them. Team looks a bit stale, needs freshening up. Need to raise the tempo a lot second half.

Only complaint is the passing to the side of the 18 yard box on goal kicks, seems to put a lot of undue pressure on us.

Played well in my opinion; sacrificed our attack at times for a bit more defensive cover which is fine against the defensive teams.

1 point off 1st now, seems to be coming together a bit more now. Well done to all, everyone played quite well with no horror shows. Finally, good to see Mears make a positive impact; 5 minutes in and gets an assist, can't moan.

Millwall came for the point, we rely heavily on the counter attack but teams have to attack for us to do that. That’s as comfy I’ve felt with the defence, largely down to milwalls poor effort. Thought Hoolahan looked really decent when he came on also.

I enjoyed today's game, and thought the performance was one of our better ones. Alot less mistakes, Everyman played there part, defence looked strong, a professional performance. Thought we had some neat play even on the first half without the final ball. Also a good preformance without a performing Barnes (he's allowed a few standard games)

To be honest I don’t think today was one of his better days. Couldn’t beat his man and every cross from him was poor. Scored twice with him off the pitch, with the first goal coming from brunt taking the corner on Phillips side after he’d been subbed.

Workman like performance, 6/10. Gayle once again made the crucial difference. I dread to think how many points we would have dropped without him. Looked more organised albeit against a conservative defensive team but also very slow on the ball to hurt them. Job done ultimately. Good results elsewhere as well so have to be pleased. We just need to keep Gayle fit and playing at all cost.
Title: Re: After Match Debate
Post by: Dan on September 22, 2018, 05:37:58 PM
If we're to win automatic promotion, that's the kind of performance that will be needed over and over again. Steady in defence, took the chances when they came. I suspect more and more teams will play like that against us as the season goes on, certainly at home.

Again once we scored the first goal you could see the quality flowing through the side, some really nice interchanges after that. There's a lot to improve on, but there's a lot that's good as well. Certainly out the relegated teams we've adjusted by far the best.

I was very skeptical about them but to their credit, Mears and Hoolhan were very tidy when he came on as well. Hoolahan in particularly looks like he'll be very useful - keeps the ball well and capable of moving the ball quickly and finding gaps.

The bit of quality to win us the game came from a superb set piece and header. I'll leave you to decide who took it and headed it (clue: both much maligned on here)

Deserved that after a much better second half.

Hegazi was arguably our best player - a much improved performance from him.

Gayle just seems to have that knack of 'making the difference'.

Really enjoyed Hoolohan's cameo. See him start against Palace with some of the kids around him.

Only major gripe was Milwall's gamesmanship and how often they were getting away time time wasting, feigning injury and other bits and pieces. None of the management on the sideline, nor Brunt or any other senior players, were pressuring the ref and this made it much easier for them to get away from it.

Decent performance as long as it was 0:0 Millwall had something to defend it was awkward but after we scored probably only one winner.

Liked the cameo from Hoolihan who looked sprightly enough and helped us keep hold of the ball which at the time was all we needed to do to pick up the points.

To be fair that was us last season, and the seasons before. Always backfires when you have an awful defence. We were holding on to the ball when we could after we got our goals. One thing that annoyed me was that there was only 1 minute of added time in the first half despite the ref pointing to his watch every time their keeper had the ball, and also how every time one of their players went down when we had the ball we ended up having to stop play.
Title: Re: After Match Debate
Post by: boinging_along on September 22, 2018, 07:04:08 PM
There was a good example when one of their players went down holding his leg. He did actually look hurt to be fair.  Millwall had the ball and carried on playing for quite a while, including running past the downed player. We won possession back, looked like we were going to attack and THEN the ref stops play.

No one disputes that Brunt puts a decent ball across albeit not as often as he did and the criticism for him is for his performance in the centre where he is not suited and again proved so today so petty little jibes are just that, petty.

I thought we looked a yard off the pace first half. Bit of a boring half where not a lot happened other than Johnstone almost gifting them a goal coming out of his area when there were two defenders to deal with the danger.

Second half we looked more lively right from the kick off and it was just a case of getting the breakthrough. Once we did we never looked in any trouble, Millwall never really threatened.

Interesting new tactic from Big Dave a back SIX for the last five minutes or so. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Hegazi man of the match.

Ref was a plonker.

A win is a win,job done.

Good that we've got the players who can make the diference when we're struggling to make a breakthrough. Last season we probably would not have scored. Gayle is an instinctive goalscorer. It is an instinct to be in the right place at the right time and to finish cleanly. We are also seeing another side to Gibbs we never really saw last season. Not just his goal, but he gets into very dangerous positions left side from which we create alot of chances. Dawson is better suited as a defender than playing as a right wing back. Phillips creates loads more danger right side.

First time I have seen Mears, only the last half an hour on a dodgy stream, but I thought he looked more than capable and comfortable on the ball.

He didn't play one forward ball all the time he was on the field. Safe ball every time either sidewards or backwards. He is a sizeable downgrade on Phillips.

Nice sideways ball for Gibbs' goal, according to the reports.

It was a cross into the box which found it's way to Gibbs. The best crosses today came from Barnes but no-one gambled to get on the end of them. That's the way it goes sometimes.

So what do you expect a player on a free transfer to be Roberto Carlos? We only needed to keep possession and Mears and Hoolahan did that when they came on. Close the game out and win the game.

Just stating a fact. Hoolahan is a free signing as well but he's much better than Mears.

The ‘reception ‘ for Mears when he came on left me embarrassed for the bloke (total silence) Whatever we think of him he’s one of ours now so let’s get behind him. I thought he did okay.

I noticed this as well, lots of 'safe' balls without ever going forward. In fairness, his cross for the goal was very good - I think it was originally for JRod/Gayle but it got cleared, regardless you can't deny the quality of the ball.
From what I gather, he isn't anywhere near as good as Phillips but seemed good at his positioning defensively, which is ideal if you need to hold on to a lead.

I agree with Hoolahan anyway, seems a genuinely good player and a good example of using the free-agent market wisely.

Hoolahan has been a class player for years who I think will force his way into the team for certain games. Mears i feel was a stop gap until we can sign a better right back hopefully in January. He has been identified to do a job and he did that today. We were winning the game when he came on and contributed to the second goal. We know that he isn't a first choice but Darren Moore trusts him to do a job when required. And we must trust him to.

Really enjoyable win for completely different reasons to Stoke and Brizzle....almost like a normal game of football.   they got men behind the ball rather than operating a high press so we struggled to create space to get at them.  Bit we always had that bit more.and Gayle is a wonderful goal scorer.   This win showed another side of the team today....Barnes had a bit of a stinker, nothing came off for him today and we still scored two.   aDefended resolutely when we needed to be and was amusing to finish the game with a TP like formation.  Saying that Tosin showed a couple of lovely touches for a big man.  Totally enjoying this season so far.

Just to add....stinker compared to the quite exhillerating recent performanced

A hard earned three points and a clean sheet.
Only complaint is the passing to the side of the 18 yard box on goal kicks, seems to put a lot of undue pressure on us.
Really not happy with that tactic.
3 points it is.

The idea is to draw the opposition on, then play through them into midfield to set up attacks.   Totally agree it looks painful at times but there is method behind the madness.

I wouldn't abandon it. It's the modern game. We need either a lot of work on the training pitch or better ball playing defenders for it to not seem so flaky.

The lads dis what they had to do.
Watching Millwall was like watching us last season, no ambition no real threat lets take a point.
Even the goal keeper was Fosteresque with his goal kicks, taking forever.

Showed we can win ugly. The substitutions showed that Moore really wanted that first clean sheet.

Thought we looked better defensively with less sloppy passes between the back 3. Midfield still got overrun a bit in the first half and some poor passes from both Livermore and Brunt. Barnes was pretty bog standard a bit like he was against Blues but he's going to get games where he is nullified and it's up to us to cope with that.

Always thought we'd get a scrappy goal and so it was. Decent corner from Brunt and a good header from Hegazi, Gayle in exacty the right spot to tap home. Thought Mears looked tidy when he came on and did what he had to really. Good cross for the Gibbs goal too.

Hope Phillips is okay but if not it may be an opportunity for Burke or Edwards to show what they can do....especially if they play well against Palace.(Assuming they are playing).

Other results have gone well for us too.

The midfield is still a concern for me. We are a couple of injuries away from serious problems as well. I hope Matty Phillips' injury isn't too bad we will really miss him. An injury to Dwight Gayle would deeply concern me too. Robson-Kanu can sometimes grab a goal as a sub but when he starts he doesn't give you any confidence that he can do the business. Burke seems totally out of favour he's not even making the bench now. Harvey Barnes would be a big loss too. We have Hoolahan now which helps but he's slightly different in that he's busy and neat and tidy but he's not going to commit people or offer the cutting edge that Barnes does.

We could do with a lucky season with regards to injuries and suspensions.

Agree with most of this but if Phillips is injured for Preston on Sat, it doesn't matter how well Burke or Edwards do. It will be Mears in for him at RWB.

What the hell was Johnstone doing flying out of his box like that (first half) and then not even clearing it! Lucky that we had guys back on the line to head clear.

Decision making is not Johnstone's strong point at the moment. No need to come for that ball at all there were two defenders to deal with it. Should've come for a cross at Boro that we conceded from and didn't make his mind up what to do for Blues goal against us.

What I will say for him though is he seems to have a really good temperament nothing seems to get to him.

Was delighted that we were able to win despite another poor performance, and one in which the front three/four being so talented didn't bail us out. I said it at the time, but Gayle is, and will continue to be, a cracking signing. Love a quality poacher.

Takes his goals and assists out of the team we'd be in the bottom half. He makes all the difference.

It really was not a poor performance mate, those are the games that win you the league. 10 men behind the ball who make it hard to break down.

City have them throughout their season in the premierleague when it ain’t pretty but in the end they stay patient and get the result.

Don’t really know what you were expecting this season, we aren’t going to score 4 every game it just doesn’t happen

I think saying Millwall stuck 10 men behind the ball is a bit unfair.  First half they had the better chances and we were lucky to still be 0-0 at half time.

Second half we showed more urgency and pushed them back.

Disagree with every word of that. Can't say that Millwall sat 10 men behind the ball overly, they created some of the games better chances, whereas we created next to nothing before taking the lead with a very scrappy opener.

As I said, I was delighted with the win considering it was a game where our front players didn't click. I fail to see what you have an issue with about that, as your response has next to nothing to do with anything I said...

I don't think it was poor.   I actually thought it was a good team performance, even if no individuals shone as in previous games.  Myself and the lad normally name our man of the matches on the way home and we both struggled........Gibbs was good and you always get extra points for the goal but after that this was a solid team performance of 6.5/7 of our ten. Work rate was outstanding at times and we do actually look a threat again at corners, so to score from one was no fluke.  Came out of the ground very happy with what was a very different but still impressive performance and result.

I agree with that 100%... it was not poor for me, just different. The bottom line is we are all happy with the result. Things are going well at the moment. I will now be interested to see how we face up to the next away game. At this level I would like to see us adopt the same game plan, regardless of where we are playing. That is exactly what Wolves did in this division last year and look how things worked out for them!

Millwall came with a Pulis type game plan, hang in there for a draw and try and sneak something.
When we had the ball they all retreated, when our back 3 had the ball they were quite happy to let them have it.
Yes they had a couple of chances in the first half more to do with our mistakes than their creativity.
They had some giant bodies playing at the back who all came forward for a free kick or corner, even the goal keeper was wasting time from kick off ala Foster.
